I bought an aeropress for making coffee when travelling. I found out that the coffe is much better than the one from my other coffee machine, and since then I use the Aeropress also at home and I dumped the coffee machine. I'm thinking about taking the A. on an airplane on long flights and to make coffee myself with the hot water they serve for tea.

I normally find if you tell them in advance that you're travelling by bike so if theres a misshap (or exhaustion) you may arrive late - and usually they're fine for you to just rock up pitch, and pay the next day if no one about to pay. I always get the feeling the check in is more for noisy people with cars and big sites to pitch.

I favour the more comfortable version of this, touring rather than bikepacking ; a proper bed, hot shower and meal at the end of the day. Rode from Brighton to the west coast of Scotland last week, 700 miles in 8 days. The riding is as hard but the recovery is easier with a hotel. No Instagram here either, not interested in that, just enjoy the riding and exploring the UK.

100%. Bikepacking for me is dirty, stinky socks, jerseys and bibshorts. And saddle sores. And honestly, as much riding as I do, bikepacking is too much "bike". I like a good long ride as much as anyone (I live in the Alps and ride a lot up and down the mountain passes), but there are also other things in life than cycling. Granted, going on a big "expedition" where there is discomfort involved produces some wonderful memories out in the nature that are remembered, but I'd argue you can achieve the same thing but in a less extreme way, e.g. as suggested by @chrisstaples6189 above.

When I was 22 years old, more than 30 years ago. Two friends and I rode our bikes across the western United States and Canada. We started in Utah, then crossed Idaho, Oregon, Washington State, British Columbia, Alberta, and Montana. Each of these states or provinces are either much larger than Britain or about the same size. It was an amazing two months of living out of a tent. There were few days when it didn’t rain or snow on us, but we all had a wonderful time. I recommend this to anyone!

Well, Ollie is not wrong about the shitty parts of bikepacking or bike touring. It is very much a "high-variance" activity. The lows are pretty low, but the highs are all the higher for it. I went on a trip this week but busted my knee, so I felt pretty down on day 2 and 3 (also it rained). But then I got the most amazing tailwind, and breezed home in half the expected time. That was one of the best days of riding ever, despite the knee.

Back in the day I used to do something akin to this. Only in those days, it was called cycle touring, not bikepacking. I'm sure someone will tell me they both still exist separately. I thought it made way more sense to use a steel framed (Reynolds 531) touring bike with panniers and low riders for a more stable low centre of gravity. Definitely nothing flopping about. I loved it and the handling was great, given the load. The miles flew by, twiddling low gears. I also rode stripped down road bikes and still do, but, at 62, I miss those touring days.

Haha great video. I have to admit though, when I see all the gubbins precariously balanced in oversized saddlebags, bar bags, handlebar bags, top tube bags etc., I wonder why not just use a pannier bag? They’re kind of made for carrying stuff and it makes life much simpler. But then I guess an Orca aero isn’t really made to carry a pannier rack.

Re: Ollie saying people go backpacking for social media... man I'm out here in the national forests almost every weekend and I dont have an FB, Insta, any of that shit. I think most people go bikepacking because its so damn good for the soul to get into nature and the quiet, and able to explore it on two wheels under your own manpower. Its the ultimately feeling of self-sufficiency, which is in very much opposition to doing it for other people.

The funny thing is if you bikepack in a way that bags act as fairings, some tests show they can actually make you more aero not less. The key is to keep things in line with the frame and rider. Something that was missing, at least from the film, was stopping to savour some of the local sights. It seemed to be more about getting to the destination, which isn’t really the point of bikepacking. It’s all about the journey, which Ollie seemed to grasp when talking about going to more exotic locations. Hopefully that was just missing from the film and they did get to enjoy that aspect. It’d be great to see Ollie doing slow cycling with Jack Thurston, while camping overnight. I bet he’d really enjoy it. Also, yes, something further afield. He definitely looked much more relaxed after the night camping. He was a bit neurotic beforehand. 😅

I dont post on instagram (or any other social media for that matter) and still enjoy bikepacking a lot! take that Ollie :) Reasons why I enjoy it: 1) figuring out what I absolutely need in terms of equipment / what could be omitted next time 2) I really like camping in general, optimizing the sleeping system is also a source of joy 3) just being out there without looking at stats all the time, nice change of pace. 4) campfires! :) p.s.: if you dont want to be exposed to bugs/critters (and I get that) - maybe consider bringing a bivvy bag that closes up all the way and has a breathing net kinda thing built in

In a few weeks I'll be flying to Edinburgh with my bike to go for a bikepacking trip in the UK. Edinburgh to London in about 14 daysin solo mode! I'm pretty worried as the only thing I have done before was the coast to coast (3days), so not sure how my body is going to hold that. But this video makes me think even with all the worries I have at the moment I will end up loving it. Thanks GCN!

I just did a 600 mile bikepacking trip across Kansas over 8 days. It was a real treat. I'm sure Connor could appreciate that after this year's dirty Kanza ride.

I think I get my best sleep when bikepacking, easily 9 hours of sleep. And we don't all post photos, someone spend also an outrageous amount of time to edit videos for their less-than-400 subscribers on youtube :) So jokes on you, Ollie, I don't get any like (on youtube or Instagram) and still bikepacking every time I can

Conor and Ollie should do a bikepacking route in the Alps or Pyrenees. Should also contact Fairlight Cycles (UK bike brand) about riding their Strael 3.0's with bags. That would be awesome to see!

I’m with Ollie! The sleep is s-t, so is the food, and so is anything related to hygiene. Touring by bike is my favorite kind of vacation, but give me a B and B. Camping is a deal-killer.

Next year I'm going on a Bikepacking trip to Armenia. But I ride a 26" Trekkingbike and I don't think I'll post anything on social media. I don't know why anyone would want to ride a Gravel or Roadbike for such a trip, but I won't judge anybody doing so. Because in the end it's about the journey and the things and people you get to see and meet.

Well before Instagram was a flash in some developers pants my mate Steve and I went bike packing twice in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) 1979 and 1980 for a month each time, camp site to camp site, and sometimes wild. Conor and Ollie went rich man bike packing.. nought like w'at we did! Both Steve and I took our race ready bikes of the era; 38 spokes, 42/52, 18 or 22 mm tyres, cassette of 14-24. On a couple of occasions we went over 200kms in a day, up mountains for hours. And on one of the trips our bikes were stolen. Holiday cut short! We loved it! By the way I lived in Limpley Stoke for one of my years in Bath Uni. Cycled every day to and from campus via Brassknocker Hill

Heading out on a 9-day trip down the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail in Colorado later this year....first trip in many years. While it will not be self-supported I look at is as the first step in what I hope to be an long-term relationship with bikepacking...

Didn’t backpacking used to be called touring? You don’t need the lightest most aerodynamic bike. You need comfortable with a good range of gears.

If by bike packing you mean “fully supported trip to the Giro via an official tour operator” staying in stunning hotels. Then yes. If you mean, lugging kit and sleeping in a bus shelter… it’s a hard no.

Do you guys have a video on transforming your road bike to a backpacking bike? With that I mean not only the bags or setup for the bags etc. But more like the bike itself? Which size of tires? Change the wheels or any type of these things regarding bike gear set up so that the bike is ready for every circumstance? Also a video on which tents/sleeping bags and other gear that are suitable/good in your opinion for backpacking and maybe other gear to make the bikepacking experience amazing. Like maybe gear to make a small meal on your own or heat up some coffee/thee/soup.

Honestly, I think this is one of the best ways to bikepack. Just go somewhere, spend the night and come home. Lowers the load needed and just makes for fun. (Says the guy who just spent last night camped looking at the Golden Gate Bridge before riding home today.

My next trip will be the Moray coast and east coast of Scotland as I'm done with midges at this time of year. I'm also not into this fancy baggage that goes hand in hand with the "schmavel" bikes...got an old rigid On-One inbred with 22/36 by 11-32 and Marathon plus Tour tyres which has a stainless steel tortec rack and small panniers, and this time I'm using a bob yak too if needed....might look crap compared to the fashion "granker" bikes but far more fit for purpose as long as I stay away from proper rough singletrack!!!
