​​@@henrysanecdotes5323Alberta has a live auction system for power where different power plants can sell to the grid at different prices and then consumers buy from middlemen who buy capacity from the grid at that same price (+fees). The idea is competition from generators drives down prices because the grid only pays the lowest price. Most people lock into a contract for a specific rate year round with their provider, but if you want you can just ride the market like this guy. This is a bit of a simplification, and if it seems stupid a lot of people agree (if it should change is a political question recently) but that's essentially how it works.
