Yeah, the climax is the same, Maverick/Cole has lost his confidence and can't do the things he used to, suddenly he finds himself in similar situation to the accident that destroyed his confidence and pulls it off, he now has his confidence back and is on the attack until the end.

I heard that if the producers wanted to portray NASCAR, the race cars had to go through the same process the real NASCAR drivers. So, every race they filmed, the cars had to the same qualification procedures as the real NASCAR drivers to be in the races.

Yep the night race at Bristol Greg Sacks drove the green and yellow 46 but the car failed to qualify but at Phoenix they got both cars in the race and the 51 driven by Bobby Hamilton actually qualified 5th and even led some laps before the engine let go it was Bobby Hamiltons cup debut

Cole was likely experiencing self doubt as he was approaching the crash site, flashing back to a similar situation in which he and Roddy Burns were injured. It took Harry's encouragement and faith in Cole to push him through the crash and by the time he came out the other side, Cole was back to his old self.
