I sold 37 plastic model kits on eBay , for that whole month it was like I had two jobs , in fact , the effort and time put into selling these 37 model kits caused me list productivity in my career job . Bottom line , the entire exercise of selling those 37 model kits , not only cost me money , it caused me anxiety and grey hair . Folks , Do Not Beat up on A Retail Man like Peter , nope , Peter works very , very hard to make this niche of the American Dream to work . People seriously underestimate the time it takes to sell, package, and ship items online. Over 200 things sold on ebay doesn’t get easier though😂
@objectivetruth2945
@objectivetruth2945 Ай бұрын
@@user-ox2xi6kk8o Exactly. Peter only pays $10 max for each item people bring in, wanting people to basically give away their stuff. On the other hand, he tries to sell the stuff for a few hundred bucks. No warranty of course. If it breaks down immediately, you have to eat the loss. I do admit that pawn shops are a tough business because, due to Chinese factories, many items today cost only about $50 max. The issue I have with Peter is that some of the stuff people bring in seem to be valuable. For example, Craftsman tools can sell for a decent amount. But Peter isn't willing to pay up because he knows that most sellers are in a bind. That's why they come in. Peter's goal is to get things for a steal. And if you spent hours to get there, he knows that you need to close the deal no matter how bad it is. I wouldn't trust anything Peter says.

Love the show. I worked part time in a small pawn shop when I was in college. I never got to make deals, I mostly just did inventory and what ever I was told to do. It was a cool job. Lot's of the same people would come through every month or so. We did a lot of small loans as well. Boss taught me about price vs value. Even though he negotiated, because people expected it, he knew exactly what he was going to pay for something right after a good look and appraisal (done in his head as no internet then). He was a super cool guy. Very good to me. Since I was having to work 3 jobs to pay for school, he let we work more hours than he needed and when I he knew it was close to Christmas, he'd make me a great deal on a present for my girlfriend. Less than he'd paid for it. He'd probably gave it to me but he knew I'd neve accept it. Never liked the guys that you knew were trying to rip you off. Those people he could smell a mile away and people he thought were thieves, he'd not even talk to them.

I collect Swatch watches and that was a 1989 Grey Line GB411. Worth about $35. A little secret: The date on the watch dial is the copyright date 1988 that is usually a year before the watch was released to the public. The real date of the watch is on the rear, like 9315-P would be 9-1989 31-week 5- day of the week. Also when I seen that guy with the tools I thought it was 'Classy' Freddie Blassie, the wrestler, although he passed away several years ago.

That absolutely makes sense. I'm a small business owner and i give estimates all the time and a lot of people wonder why the price is so high and i try to explain to them pretty much exactly what you just explained. Everything that goes on behind the scene the overhead the wear and tear the gas the equipment and tools and materials and the cost to the business owner not even including paying yourself a salary there is very little to none left at the end and then the actual business makes nothing then that business goes out of business. People don't realize.

Peter, I recently viewed and decided to subscribe to your channel. From what I have viewed you are the most honest and patient person in this type of business. I watched the video on the guy who kept taking out tools from the box and then going back and forth and looking at his list. I'm in Canada and I can tell you if he walked into a store here and did that he would be told short and sweet pack up you stuff and leave. I love your channel and look forward to watching more of them. Thank you.

The guy with the tools, I literally have complete tool sets from the nineteen-teens to when they closed their last retail store in the area about ten years ago. I watched their close-out sales until they hit 50% off, then went in and spent almost $900.00 on set after set of tools; I know I have more tools than I'll ever use; most of them are still in the packaging, but there's a difference between needing tools and wanting them!!

I remember some time back I needed a specific (10 mm) socket wrench and found a good deal on eBay: a whole set (used) for 1 Dollar starting price. Since there were so many other ones on eBay that were brand new, people overlooked it and I wound up buying it for the 1 Dollar plus shipping. The seller lost money on that big time. The manufacturers should sell not just complete sets with all the sizes but also sets that have just the most commonly used ones, like the 10 mm metric or the 3/8 standard.

You’re too nice Pete. I would have offered $100 and that’s it to the tool guy and that’s it. Take it or leave it buddy. These people always make it sound like they’re doing you a big favour coming into you’re shop and selling you their stuff meanwhile it’s the other way around. (They have stuff they want to get rid of because they don’t want it or need fast cash and you’re doing them the favour taking a look and willing to buy it)

It's always the same thing with tools...people expect way too much money for them. I could go to my local hardware store and buy tools that I need for like $5 a piece. Sure, most are junk these days but for most people in my view don't care. They simply need to get a random task done around the house and don't want to spend a premium for something that gets used once a year.

Peter you don't have to justify what your selling and what your profit is. You have employees to pay, rent, etc. If people sell their items to you its because they need the quick cash. They can list their items on other sites but the majority are to lazy to do so. Btw, is Vicky still working for you?
@RiouInsuiko
@RiouInsuiko 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right that he doesn't have to justify anything. The explanation at the end, however, I think is pretty important. A lot of people balk at the idea that there's not enough money in buying a $40 item for $20. At face value it looks like you'd double your money. Peter's explanation shows it's not that simple. Another thing that's fairly important that he didn't mention is that selling something on Ebay also has additional noteworthy drawbacks. Both go somewhat hand in hand but being required to offer some kind of warranty (Ebay guarantees to buyers that items meet expectations, etc. It's difficult to truly sell something 'as is' and never accept returns) as well as having to deal with scammers. The lower the price point of an item the less it's worth buying it for. Hopefully people stuck through the video to the end and get a better understanding of why they're wrong about perceiving so many of these pawn shops to be 'lowballers'.
