Wow, it's been years, so many many years, and I finally found someone else who understands the greatness of nano. I know it's stupid, but every time I look up how to do some random thing on linux that I either don't know or have forgotten and the instructions; instead of saying to use a text editor, specifically tell me to install and use Vi I get legit upset for a few seconds.

10 devices doesn't even cover half of my ever changing lab environment. I constantly spin up and down VMs. What are the options for someone who does a ton in their homelab to learn various technologies. I saw somewhere that adding 25 devices was something along the lines of $2k US which is asinine for just a homelab.

@@maskettaman1488 My homelab is quite extensive. You are only thinking of physical and I use my homelab to further my experience and my career. In my homelab I have a firewall, 2 cisco switches, 2 dell servers, a synology nas, and 2 ubiquiti access points. Thats just the physical architecture. On top of the physical I have a ton of VMs. 6 For kubernetes so I could learn how to build out an HA Cluster, I have 3 VMs for windows server (Root CA, Intermediate CA, and AD) I have my media server, a docker host, a Wazuh cluster, an opensearch cluster, I have an ansible server, I have graylog running, E-mail Server, DNS server (Bind Primary w/ Pihole as secondary) I have My raspberry PIs as well running various other services. Each of these VMs / physical endpoints will take up a slot in WUG. And this is a quite small environment you'd be surprised at how much a business actually runs compared to my lab. Also keep in mind that I work as a network engineer, learning new technologies and protocols comes with the territory and the best way to do so is to spin it up at home and use it.

Back in school for my end project I made a PRTG server for monitoring and it certainly was a game changer to have such monitoring. One night I thought I'd just quickly do something for my endwork, I check the PRTG server and instantly could see that 1 of our servers was messed up big time. (Had an absolutely clueless teammate). He ended up getting 3 folders on a server with an infinite loop of more folders within them. Inspecting element 1 folder could say it contains like 1234 folders and 426 files, then checking 1 folder deeper it could say 7325 folders and 9423 files. Folder names were too big to be deleted and it fully filled the harddrive to the very last bit. Not only that, it escaped the VM and filled the entire physical machines storage. The same machine where my classmates and another class also had their endwork VM's on so it was a big issue that I spent 2 hours that night at midnight together with a teacher to fix. Spotting this issue early on and getting it fixed before anybody else suffered from it was 100% because of monitoring.

In many video's "sudo..." is being used, but every time I use that command, my terminal says that the term "sudo" is not recognized. How do I get this to work?

Just use home assistant. It just works and doesn’t necessitate an extra service

There are now so many players in this game it's insane. But makes sense, it's a lucurative market based on the number of MSPs out there. That being said, if you need anything sophisticated in any monitoring system it's never free and it becomes an unmanageable cost once you get past 100 devices. They all use WMI and SNMP. Prometheus however is the best overall free all-inclusive monitoring system.

followed the instructions, every device was limited to ping monitoring. Thinking of Homeassistant, which has basically any device, its drive and their mothers on display, running on a slim raspberry, make this almost obsolete. Only the notification is something you don't get directly out of the box and not sure if it does work without subscription.

hi there, I have a suggestion for a video. Could you give a definitive explanation of an scenario with the proper tools where rke2 can have security? I am on my way to have k8s with rke2 v1.28. I managed to have this running thanks to your videos and others: rke2 - metallb - longhorn - postgres-oprator - kong using postgres - Rancher. I am on my way to deploy knative for the serverless, and istio oc. I am using Ansible, Vagrant, Packer, plus MAAS to manage all of these. The thing is that I am missing the security stack and firewall. I have read about NeuVector, authentik, keycloak, stackrox, stig, wazuh, and Crowdsec. But to be honest I don't know where to start, and where to end. I need help from the pros to decide my security/firewall security for my staing and prod clusters. I think this would make a great video :)
