For me, the strength of your gear reviews is how you explain how you think about the tool, and in seeing what you test it on to show how you use/would use the tool. I think you do a better job of telling that story and helping me think about tools like a professional does than most youtube reviews do.

When trying to figure out what problem the org was trying to solve, I advise you also ask them what problem they were trying to solve. This would make reviews not only useful to people that might be buying the product but also to the companies producing the solution

There is great value to the consumer for a negative review. Obviously not so much for the people involved making the review in the first place and there is an ethical angle involved there as well. Food for thought.

Back in the day we didn't have Internet, ( Google / KZbin ) to learn from so yes self taught as well and always learning or I could have gone to Studio Masters in HOLLYWOOD, Calif. for two years but my parents were Doctors and did not play music so it was out of the question to be sent there. These Audio Engineers today have a GREAT since they can learn from people like you on YT & can get taught correctly and get to that Level sooner than us that had to do it w/out. Great Topic Colt.

I like to watch videos of many different perspectives when it comes to mixing or gear or microphones or anything music/audio related. It helps me not only learn from those who are more experienced but also dictate my own opinions on certain techniques or plugins or gear. It’s helped me learn so much and you have been are the forefront of that. I’ve been able to gain a lot of knowledge off you and it’s helped get me better at my mixing and mastering. I still have a long way to go but practice and experience will only get better. Thank you for your content :)

I in the past have really enjoyed the videos you have made on thinkgs like plug ins that are more accessible to me and ive enjoyed seeing you put together your B room recently as that sapce felt more obtainable and showed what you as a professional really feel is a necessity. I think having more content for viewers with less resources is great but also it will be cool to see how the equipment relates to someone at a higher level.

I'm glad that you're taking this approach Colt. I love your gear reviews, but also know that I can't afford much of the gear you use, and if I can't afford it, my students certainly can't. That said, I have kids setting up home studios with semi-pro gear and we are all trying to achieve professional quality, even though we don't have a Neuman mic or high end rack mount compressors, we are still trying to achieve great results from the home studio students we teach. I would very much like to see reviews on home studio gear that is surprisingly great considering it's price. Keep up the great work! Especially on studio business, but we are looking forward to more reviews from you as well.

Hi Colt, been a long time watcher of the channel and originally came for the real hands on tutorial or industry stuff. For me personally, I'd like to see more of this stuff again and less of the gear reviews and just talking to camera videos. It's your channel of course, but just my preference. On the gear review side of things, I do fundamentally disagree with your reasoning not to publish any negative reviews and that it doesn't do anyone any good. I'd argue that it actually does a lot of good. To address your points; "It doesn't do the company any good" - If a company makes a shitty piece of gear in an already over-saturated market, they should know about it and have the opportunity to improve it. The review doesn't have to be scathing, just honest. The company is going to go under if they keep putting out shitty gear in the long run anyway... "It doesn't do me any good" - I think posting honest (negative if that is how you feel) does a lot to boost your credibility and have people trust your word when you DO find a piece of gear that you love. If you say everything is great, then it's hard to believe your speaking independently and trust your advice. But more importantly, it serves your audience and prevents them from spending their hard-earned money on sub-par gear! Love your work, Colt. Just my 2 cents (for the algorithm ;) 🙌

Funny enough, I was just offered to review a microphone on my channel. Even with my mere 350 subscribers, small channels CAN get offered products to review and get sponsored with. Promoting gear that just doesn't work well, will eventually lead to the fall of trust lose with your audience. It also depends on the niche of the review!! I don't think you would review a gaming microphone (but I would be surprised if you planned on it!!). And I hope this video reaches out to more people that create content. And for those of you that are reading the comments that aren't Colt, don't just say good things because someone is paying you to do so. Colt is TOP DOG for putting this out there.

+1 on making sure to tell us whether a piece of gear is bound for your studio or not, and how it does or doesn’t fit your needs. That perspective is easily more important and useful than an ‘unbiased’ review. In music academia we recognize now that bias is inevitable and unremovable from communication, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Bias is what gives us perspective and uniqueness worth bringing to attention. If you consider all you’ve talked about here-understanding the company’s goals and market and scoring against that-as well as bringing your own usage and needs, you’ll keep raising your already high standards for reviews and they’ll become more and more useful to us.

I can honestly say that negative gear reviews have saved me a LOT of cash. As someone (like most people I assume) who has a restricted budget, knowing a piece of gear will not work for me is important. The reviews I like, as far as negative ones go, are the ones that say "this one is not so good, but here is a better choice". Food for thought.

Colt, Thank you for that complete analogy on that objective parallel talking point; I understand 100% where you are coming from as an engineer, consumer & product advisor; this highlights all these manufacturers trying to sell a product, good or bad, for example, mic pres like a neve will give you tone, and that's fine if that's what you're going for. Still, you don't necessarily need it, just going into DAW via audio card, for example, Appollo 8 or Focusrite or many others; gear is highly subjective; thank you, I hope I wasn't rambling; I understand your message!

Usually funds need to be directed for what a studio needs. Most people have limited funds to dedicate to the studio so an educated purchase is a lot better than money wasted on eye Candy thank you for taking the time to care for, your listeners it’s going to be a more challenging job. Hopefully it's a mixed bag of gear. Videos like the SPL Vitalizer is good and all, but with a price tag outside the range of affordability is like reviewing gear for guys who have it made already. Like the atmos system. A room full of focal monitors doesn't do much for the guy you're trying to mentor. I can't do 10k+ worth of monitors. Not many of us can. Those who can probably don't need a review on them. Though I did pick up the plugin of the SPL Vitalizer because I liked the way it helped shape the low end, but there's a huge difference between a $20 sale on plugin alliance and a $2000 piece of hardware. Given that everything can be done in the box these days, I'm only considering gear under $1000, but preferably even cheaper.

I can appreciate your reasons for not wanting to do it, but if you try a piece of gear that tried to hit an obvious target and missed, or does so without being a great value compared to its competition, I would like to know about it. Learning what gear to avoid because one didn't know there were better or more aesthetic options out there is just as important as what to look for in a solution to a purchaser's particular problem. There will always be people new to the game that don't know there's 30,000 compressors on the market and that first one they saw isn't all it has been cracked up to be.

I disagree with you wanting to remain unbiased Colt. Your opinions about certain tools as well as those from Andrew Masters & Jeremy from Recording Studio Loser, gave me the extra buying confidence in my gear acquisition journey. Each one of your previous reviews, regardless if I made a decision to purchase a unit for myself, allowed me to really get a glimpse of what to look for in certain pieces of equipment. In turn, ultimately saving me a ton of money and headaches by investing into a nicer product that will get way more miles and potentially produce a better final product versus wasting money on something I know I will out grow eventually. At the same time, I can understand the new concept just with having to keep the content rolling now that you have your studios set up how you've envisioned. If anything with your previous videos, seeing a piece of gear in your setup were goals to achieve from the start of my music journey and with each new upgrade on my end, it truly feels like an accomplishment or a milestone once I have acquired something similar, if not the same tools. Overall awesome video Colt and I look forward to seeing how you make the shift in your future content. Much love brother.

You seem like a nice dude but I can’t help but feel like you are now just trying to make 10min plus content for the YT algorithm…you say the same thing over and over and over again. Either you’re trying to feed the algorithm or you don’t actually listen to yourself when you edit the videos. Either way it’s pretty disrespectful to people’s time to waffle like this when you have the profile you have managed to get. You will engage people if you make GREAT CONTENT….like Rick Beato. Just think it’s something you might like to think about before YT changes their algorithm rules and you get left behind making content about nothing with click bait titles.

Well, considering your metrics for reviewing stuff, how can you quantify the ammount of "not for me" you need to just NOT put out a video about the gear? Because unless the piece is just useless, doesn't do what it says on the tin, or there just is a clearly better alternative for the same ammount of money that does the exact same thing, there will always be a great reason to just give out an unbiased review for the sake of informing your audience. Considering people have different studios, different needs, different budgets, etc. their realities might just need an informative review of a piece of gear that you wouldn't use because you think it's trash and you have the shinier new thing. There's a fine line here, I guess, and one can only make so many video reviews, of course. I'm just talking from a serving your audience perspective, since you dried out your "breaking edge" cases for your self and your mixes in particular. I'm curious what those cases would be. and I'm looking forward to your next videos to watch it happen! :D Keep up the great work, I've learned a lot from you!

I like the gear videos but less of them us better. We can't trust you if you're constantly reviewing gear and calling it amazing. I like the channels where the guy shows everything he has in his studio and actually uses and only shows gear that he intends to use. I'd rather see more of you working or discussing concepts or missubderstandings
