Becky you really made me laugh with your facial expressions during the “caulking the right way” talk and Josh nailing the trim on, that was hilarious and just what I needed today. As for the wall. Take it down and be done with it. You have flooring to knit it and, as you said ages ago, it will look so good with a sofa and a table or sideboard there, will bring a lot more light too. Stay safe x

Take the wall down. Put the outlets down as floor outlets (trust me they come in handy). Since it's a floating floor and you have more of it weave the patch in. (meaning you will have to lift the floor around it to have longer pieces to replace vs short little patch pieces.) To do it now while the house is at this stage will save you major headaches later.

I have a Victorian home that has a couple floor outlets ( you can get ones with brass, or other covers) or just install more in the walls if needed. Switches might already be duplicated on other walls. Another thing we have is a brass Central light switch.. So you can turn on and off 8 most used lights, its very convenient. We also have some switches that light up so you know they are on, especially the basement... They look like art, small.

I agree in the floor, have electrical ran while the section of the floor is up and the electrician can run it to a switch. Or the plug in on the floor will be live and you could have an entrance table with 1 or 2 lamps on it.

I am on the “remove wall” team. You will be glad you did it later; since that was what you originally wanted anyway. Suggestion: You stated you are waiting on the kitchen redo. I would go ahead and purchase the trim pieces you will need now. It might be difficult to match it when the time comes. That’s one reason the house had so many trim styles when you purchased it. You guys are doing a terrific job with everything.

You know… since the wall is where the “hallway” is from one room to the other, you could always make an inlaid wood “rug” with different wood. Kinda like how they make transitional tile mosaics but with wood. That way it wouldn’t look like a silly patch. It would be deliberate. And you can have fun with it.

I'm in favor of no wall there. It just looks out of place and as you said, "it's the first thing you see when coming into the front door and also blocks your view from the main entry." Make it your way so you can enjoy what you like best. The extra flooring can cover that area on the floor after the wall is removed. Your idea of an area/runner carpet would look great as well. Maybe you can repurpose that wall into the basement for preps or something else (with a coat of your choice of paint). Not sure what the wall is made of, so that's something else to consider.

I agree with the other comments. Remove the pony wall, patch the flooring with matching planks and put the outlets in the floor. You'll definitely need them in a room that large and roomy! I have two of them in my great-room. I would never be able to plug in my end table lamps if we hadn't had them installed during construction. Thank you for not editing out the nail gun bloopers. They were so cute and fun to watch! I needed a good laugh today, after attending a memorial service earlier today. My hubby always says, "work hard, be happy. As far as your pronunciation of the word “caulk”, I offer a quick English lesson. First of all, the letter ‘L’ is silent. Next, the vowels ‘au’ make the ‘aw’ sound like in the word ‘saw’. So phonetically it would be spelled: Cawk and it rhymes with hawk. That’s all I’ve got on that subject. Isn’t the English language a blast❣️? I’m so loving your channel and watching your progress as you DIY your new home. It’s so awesome. Your expressions when trying to talk through the nail gun was hilarious, very glad you kept it in. I am team no wall, put in floor outlets. If you put a couch right there with either end tables or a slim table behind the couch, you would still get the beautiful view walking into the room and be able to use the seating. (Or you could have two chairs there so you could walk right through) whatever you and Josh decide would work best for you. You are the ones who have to put the work in and live with it, best of luck!

Remove the wall. The other idea is to rebuild a half wall that is a little thicker so it could be a decorative piece. Kind of like a table you put behind a couch in a big living room. Then you can still put a couch next to it and have it facing the view. Also in nice homes that have a big entry they have a table in the center with flowers and such. Just a thought. I hope I have explained this.

I loved that you didn’t edit out you being very ‘patient’ waiting to talk while Josh was nailing the trim. 😂😂 I got a good laugh from your expressions and thought to myself, yeah that’s me right there. My hubs & I have always done house projects too. I thought that contraption wall was def an eye soar and you should take it all down. Don’t patch the floor but reweave those boards in and turn the light switches into floor outlets. It’ll be great!!! Removing the wall allows you freedom with your furniture placement and will totally open the entrance view. The floor outlets simply give you the power if/when you need it. Good luck. You’re doing great. And kudos to Renee!!

My husband and I turned a full wall into a half-wall in our home and it was a whole production. Like you felt, half walls can be extremely wobbly since they only connect with the floor so you'll have to end up tearing it out entirely anyway in order to bolt heavy reinforcement to the foundation to keep it from just rocking around. At that point, and with that view? Absolutely tear it down and enjoy your big room! You can always break it up with furniture like a couch with a long table behind it if needed.

A good flooring person could properly stagger the wood planks you have in the garage and you would never be able to tell that the wall was there. My two cents (as a manager of an architectural firm) on the wall debate: the area looks deep enough to add two narrow "wing walls," maybe 12-14" deep to make a shallow U-shape on the entry side. This would make a perfect spot for a shallow console table and create a beautiful focal point for a vase of cut flowers or a nice piece of art. Alternately, a low, decorative bench would be great for putting on boots and shoes as an extension to your entry. This also leaves you with a nice wall on the living room side to place furniture that looks out onto your view. There's also two architectural moves called "layering" and "compression and release." Leaving part of that wall adds layers to give depth to the space and adds that tension so that when you pass that "compression" and the layers you get a greater sense of "relief." You can better and fully appreciate the view than just having it be wide open. The bonus of all this is that, a) you don't have to patch the floor or move the electrical, and b) the wing walls will strengthen the wiggliness of the wall as it is now. Also, watching you talk around the nail gun was hilarious!

St. Johns Wort needs to be tinctured fresh because the active ingredient dissipates quickly once the plant is picked. The dried plant has less active ingredient left than the fresh blossoms. If you picked it and let it dry, you can use it for tea, but increase the amount of plant material in the tea ball.

My husband is a painter and wallpaper installer. He almost never uses silicone caulking because it is unpaintable and wallpaper won’t stick. You and Josh are doing a great job. You two are such hard workers. I know it’s more work, but I would take out the wall. My husband is not even an expert floor layer, but he was able to fix our floating floor. I can’t wait to see what you do.

We have repaired wobbly railings that were sheet rocked by opening up the sheet rock on one side and placing two bolts through the base into the floor joist. The other question is there floor and the quality of subfloor underneath. I personally would not spend time trying to repair a floor that I know I am going to replace in the next ten years. Think about how the kitchen remodel might have a domino effect into that area.

My vote is get rid of the wall completely and patch the floor to the front door so it look intentional. Since it’s your dream home, make it perfect. Without the wall it’ll feel so much more open and welcoming.

I'd definitely take down the wall and patch/feather in the new floor. Your eye wants to move thru the space to the view and the wall, even if it's a half wall, will disrupt that natural flow and draw your eye down to the wall. Well worth capping or moving electrical :) floor outlets can be installed and a console table could be placed there to cap the back of a couch and can hold a lamp or two. Still keeps it open but provides flexibility and usability

I'd build a couch height bookshelf where that wobbly bit is now. Have your switches on the top of bookshelf. Build it in such a way that it's like having one layer of wood on top of the other. You flip up the top layer and your switches are built into the lower layer. Hard to describe but it would look awesome!

OMG! Laughed so hard when you were trying to talk and Josh was using the nail gun! So amazing and just how it goes in a renovation. I like a half pony wall to put the sofa up against. Anchors the room. Electrical switches would be nearby as you sit on sofa. But floor outlets would solve that dilemma. But it's hard to know from the internet how big the room is, so half wall or no wall will be fabulous. Please keep doing these videos of your renovation. Make my day!

Yes. Take the wall down and add floor outlets … you can also do an inlay on the floor if you don’t have enough flooring for the entire area. You can also have Josh build a nice furniture piece to put there to cover that area…. Something that had glass and lighting inside to utilize the electric in the floor. I’m sure whatever you do it will look great! Thanks for taking us all on this journey! ❤️

When my parents were redoing their main floor, they tiled the front of the living room by the door in hex tiles and wanted the hardwood flooring to meet the tiles in almost like a honeycomb shape. But they encountered a problem where the sub flooring actually made the tile and hardwood floor like 1/16” different and had to come up with a creative solution. So, my mum came up with the idea of having a “stony river” across the threshold between the tile and hardwood! They did stones in like I think plaster or something? (I’m not an expert). But it allowed the floor to move that 1/16” organically, solving the problem but ALSO making a really nice design feature! Maybe the hole in the floor where the hardwood was could be a pop of colour, either stained wood in an ornate pattern or maybe a different kind of material that’s meaningful to you (like a coloured marble or something?)

Take the wall down. It blocks the energy of feng shuei. I have a wall upon entry and it makes it difficult to move furniture and appliances in and out because of the need to turn left or right immediately upon entry. My wall is a structure wall for the kitchen so I won't be taking it down. @Acre Homestead you could consider a.tile design in the entry where the floor is missing and beyond if necessary. You could easily take out the existing flooring and cut pieces to blend in also

I can warmly recommend making ointment with St. John's wort. This is how we do it (old recepie from Sweden): pick the flowers and fill up a whole empty bottle. Fill with olive oil so it covers the flowers. (Make sure all flowers are covered so it wont get mold on the surface). Put the bottle in a sunny window so that the bottle is reached by direct sunlight for at least 30 days. Strain the oil and mix with warm beeswax. Pour into small glass containers - and give to friends and family who will ask for a new jar every year! Good for anxiety but also pain in joints, on the chest when coughing and more. The only warning is not put on skin if you are going to be directly sun.

Becky another benefit of painting the trim prior to the walls is you don’t have to be so detailed on the the trim edge because the darker wall paint will cover it and if the trim paint has cured when you paint the walls you can simply wipe off any boo boos from the trim.
