Hi Becky. I just discovered your channel and I'm obsessed now I was a childbirth/parenting educator for 18+ years. I was also a birth doula. A great doula can be so comforting, educational and supportive.Make sure you read reviews on her, so you can see how she does during a pregnancy/birth and postpartum. A good doula during labor kinda of blends into the wall. Meaning you and Josh will be able to focus on each other. She will step in when she when she notices that things need some assistance...like maybe you need a change in position to help progress labor or help with p 😊ain, Josh needs food ,water or a rest. Also you will discuss with her how you would like labor and delivery to go and if the nhs arise what you and Josh would like to handle. She will be able to step in for you during those times and help your goals to be attained. She will be flexible and help you understand procedures or medications that you may not have anticipated. She will also be a tremendous help postpartum...helping you with issues that arise with you. Breastfeeding help and answer the multiple questions you will have with a newborn at home. I hope this helps even just a little. Most of all remember this is your birth, no one else's. You will get a lot of unsolicited advice. But you do you. Whatever you decide medication/ no medication, breastfeeding/not breastfeeding, any of the many decisions you will make. You are a smart woman and seem like you have a wonderful relationship with your husband. You guys will make the perfect decisions for your family ❤️ sorry I was so long winded...you can tell it's a passion of mine 😊 I wish the best for both of you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Moving advice: ziplock bags. You can put an entire drawer of stuff into one bag, then when you get to the new place, if you don’t have time to unpack, you can just place the bag into the drawer it is destined for. Gets it out of the way & you can organize the drawer later. It also keeps like with like. Ziploc also has TWO gallon bags that would fit your silverware tray & larger kitchen items. Put sticky notes in the kitchen cupboards at the new place so you can plan out what goes where and anyone who might help you unpack knows where to put things. Here’s a couple of things that were very helpful in our recent move. I ordered color-coded room stickers for the boxes. I also used a large red sharpie and put an X on the sides of fragile boxes. Put heavy items like books in your rolling suitcases. Find a way to clearly identify the items you’ll need immediately, like cleaning supplies, shampoo towel toothbrush etc., coffee pot, bedding. One last thing - make your bed FIRST. That way when you run out of steam, it’s ready and waiting for you. Congrats on the new home and baby!

I always set up beds and made them first before anything else. I usually focused on getting the kitchen set up just enough to cook first, then the kids rooms bc the stability & normalcy helps them, then the couch and TV set up so we have a place to relax when needed. They're grown now but getting my kids rooms set up gave them a safe place to play and kept them busy while we unpacked. I had moved 34 times by the time I was 31 years old so I have lots of experience. Nope not military, just dysfunctional upbringing. I've been married to my current husband and in this house for 13 years now.

Would highly recommend the doula idea! Especially for your first time. I had a doula for each of my kids but the first time was absolutely necessary. I was in active labor for over 34 hours and crazily enough, my doula made it possible my husband to be able to take a quick nap. Also, our doula was not only able to advocate for us before and during the birth but also afterward when the hospital wanted to supplement with formula instead of the colostrum I had pumped. She had a lactation plan at the ready when a nurse called the social worker in and was able to explain things in a way I wasn’t able to with the pain killers I was on. I really can’t praise our doula enough!

Yes yes YES! A doula is a GREAT idea! I wish I had a doula for my first 2 births. I had a wonderful doula with my 3rd, my doula was very supportive and helpful talking through every step with what we wanted our birth experience to be like! She was one I talked to more often than my midwife actually because she was nearly just as knowledgeable with birth as my midwife. Funny thing, she actually caught my baby since she showed up first, I was further along in labor than we all thought and my midwife didn't show up in time 🙈😆 I will ALWAYS reccomend a midwife and doula for a great birth experience! It's about the well being of you, your husband and your baby! 🤗
@asimplekindofchaos

@@ambernewville4268 Oh my goodness Amber! That’s crazy but awesome! The only reason my husband didn’t have to catch our second baby was because he called our doula to verify the placement of the tens machine and she heard me in the background. After a 34 hour labor the first time around, I didn’t even wake my husband up until 2 hours in and only then to help with the tens machine and, in my mind, just go back to sleep. Well, I ended up with a precipitous labor for #2 and when our doula heard me, she told my husband to call the midwife right away. He called her and as soon as she got there our daughter was born. Lol I don’t know that my husband would have been okay with trying for another home birth if he would have had to catch a baby. 😂

Packing Tips: I tape the bottom of the box at the seam as you did then put 2 more pieces - one on each side and overlap them on the original strip. I have done multiple cross country moves and NEVER had a box come undone no matter how much weight is in the boxes. Also, pack each box until it’s completely full - you can fill gaps with spare towels, bedding etc. When the boxes get stacked they crush in if they are not full and that is when stuff gets broken. Also, pack a “Box 1”, “Box 2” etc for moving day (I recommend keeping them with you or put on truck last on/first off. Inside should contain day one necessities like kitchen must haves (enough to make a meal or 2 before kitchen is completely unpacked) - dishes, napkins silverware, favorite pot/pan to cook in, etc. Also need to include things like bedding for master bedroom (I recommend setting up bed and making it as soon as it arrives (because at the end of moving day nobody has the energy to hunt for sheets and make up the bed), toilet paper for each bathroom, towels for showering etc. All the things you might need the first couple days and don’t want to take the time to hunt through tons of boxes looking for stuff before you can cook, shower or go to bed! 🤣 Also, pack a suitcase (like you’re going on vacation) so you have the first couple days clothes and bathroom items so they are easy to locate and not have to go commando because you don’t have the energy to unpack all the bedroom boxes to find underwear or a toothbrush!🤣 Good luck! One last tip: when packing mark your boxes for the room they’ll be going in in the new house NOT the room they are in in the “old house”. It’ll save having to lug boxes from room to room at the new house when unpacking and makes unpacking much quicker.

We have successfully completed several international moves and a return to our original home which we rented to expats when we were in Asia. Your suggestions are spot on! We did the same AND had a first aid box and a kitchen essentials box. At least Becky and Josh are moving kitchen, food pantry,… items on each trip. Items we unpacked first were bathroom needs: toilet paper, hand soap, towels for drying towels. Drinking needs were second. Bed making was third followed by shower/ tub needs. Paper towels were placed in many rooms with a garbage bag.

Good ideas. The only thing I would add is, Use the cloth things you will be moving to wrap the glass things in. Extra towels & sheets around the barware, etc. This means less boxes overall, and you don't have to buy or dispose of as much paper wrapping.

Top loading washer for-ev-er!! One of my favorite infant laundry tips is to use mesh laundry bags for the baby socks…I used 2 so I had a clean bag and a dirty bag. You're working on your new house and trying to prepare for the move, taking care of a big garden, processing your garden haul, doing your KZbin videos, and you're carrying a beautiful life inside you. For your first child especially, putting in the time to find a doula you really mesh well with will make everything easier in terms of having a peaceful labor and birth! My hubby and I are empty nesters, and you'd swear there were still 5 of us living here with all the laundry and how many times a day we run the dishwasher! I can't tell you how many times I've had to run the load already cleaned in the washing machine again because I forgot to put it in the dryer! In my efforts to simplify, I decided to keep only 2 sets of sheets. Cotton for summer and flannel for winter. On wash day, the bed gets stripped, washed and remade. So easy. I've done this for many years. Then I keep 1 set for each guest bed, in case we have multiple guests. Same thinking for the number of towels. I donate gently worn towels to an animal shelter.

Becky, Please don't fret over the laundry for us, I can't speak for everyone but I care about you, clean laundry room or not! 💕 Listen, I was born in 1967 and my parents had a nanny for us five kids. I think a doula is probably a little different but certainly sounds like a wonderful helper person. I would definitely look into getting a doula type helper/advocate person! Especially since this is your first baby and it sounds like Josh would appreciate someone who could advocate for you both, um, all THREE of you! ❤ 👶 NO ONE can do it all, remember to be kind to yourself, kindness matters. 😉 💕

A doula is an advocate during the birthing process. Someone to help breathing techniques, focusing, asking for birthing ball, help with showers during labor. They can help explain to the doctors and nurses in a more rational way what your wishes are for your experience. They aren’t anything like a nanny or babysitter.

@@buckeyethor Thanks for that, that's why I said that I thought a doula was different than a nanny. I don't have all the detailed information about a doula because my children died before they were born due to domestic violence so you definitely have the advantage there! Kindness matters! 😘

It took longer than that anyways to sell the house, but it finally got done :) We rented a storage unit for a while so we wouldn't have all those boxes sitting around while people viewed the house.

I had 2 experiences with the hospital system on my own (no doula). If you can afford it HIGHLY RECOMMEND! It's an incredibly vulnerable time in your life and you want someone advocating for you. I had a nurse advocate for me on my first because my doctor was a "cutter" (she loved to push for C-sections) and she almost convinced me to throw in the towel early during labor. I know a lot of people have good experiences but I wish I had been more prepared for that aspect. Not trying to scare you but it's better to be prepared for possible pushy doctors and nurses!

WoW!!! First time I’ve heard of this and I have 2 kids and am pregnant. I was wondering why my first the male doctor on call rushed for a c-section saying ”my daughter heart beat was lowering“ no nurse helped me or allowed me to understand, my mom was so upset at this doctor because my daughter was only 5pounds and I was only at the hospital for 3 hours. 😵 this is GREAT INFORMATION FOR ANY NEW MOMS OR ANYONE NOT KNOWING! Kept wondering why my doctor kept asking why I got a c-section and why my new doctor kept asking and wondering why too. My second was a v-bac and this one I’m planning on going all natural.

@@JYYB they said the same thing to me!! She said her heart rate was "wavering but consistently recovering". She also said "her head is coning" but later I realized that's totally normal for a head to come out a bit misshapen from the birth canal. She was using fear tactics and it's so easy to be taken advantage of when you're in that state of pain and concern for your child's well-being

Becky, this is my advice to you as a nurse but also as a sensible practical person. Your baby's birth is going to be one of the most precious moments of your and Josh's lives. You will have family members or friends who have gone through pregnancies and births. In many ways they will be able to advise and help you when it comes to your choices through their own experiences. Listen to them and follow your instincts. It is so important for you to find the professionals that you can relate to and feel comfortable with so that you and Josh feel secure in your decisions. Although you will need to make the decisions soon, don't rush them. A baby's birth is precious but so are you as parents. Best wishes

I would not necessarily listen to them if they have had bad birth experiences. Things like that can cause fear in a FTM. Their births will not be your birth Becky, just keep that in mind as well. The leftover laundry in the washer, how many times have I done that, too many to count. Plus the messy laundry room looks like mine does on more occasions than I’d care to admit!! And then there was the wiping of the “stickidy” syrup on the island. That was a good one! You did so much today and must feel great about how much you got packed and organized. It's delightful to see the pregnancy brain in action. "What's this thing called?... Oh, yeah, a washing machine!" How I remember those days. Can you get a crew of friends and family to come and do the packing? Friends really do want to help. I've helped several friends pack and it's always easier if it's not your stuff and we have a blast as we box stuff. Take it easy! P.S. You are SO lucky that you hadn't run water. Once we opened the washing machine to discover "someone" had started it and forgotten it. Everything was mildewed almost to the point of not rescuing. Life...it's crazy.

As we were on a strict budget when I fell pregnant I recycled/ upcycled everything I could instead of getting rid of things …I made cot sheets from odd sheets , some bunny rugs/ swaddling wraps from a ripped flannelette sheet , I made bibs and flannels from towels that either had bleach marks or holes , I made a cot quilt cover , sheet set and baby pillowcase (pillow recommended minimum 12 months and up ) from a few metres of fabric I’d had for years , a baby mobile from a strip of thin reticulation pipe ( curled into a ring and taped up )with ribbon and some small toys won at a game arcade when we went bowling ……..I love to donate things when I can afford to buy replacements but I do try to make use of items I can .. I suppose it’s from living in a single parent family of dad and five kids and being dead poor ….I still have trouble parting with things if there is nothing wrong with them , I suppose it’s a feeling of incase hard times return 😕

Becky, In addition to labeling the content of each box, label what room in the new house the box is to go to. Since you are doing renovations to the new house you can collect your packed boxes in a central place. When it's time to be move the box into it's designated room whether it's you or if family or friends help, they will know where to place the individual box. We did this in our last move. I placed sticky notes by the entry to each room to identify bedroom 1, 2 etc, bathroom 1, 2 etc. so we did not have to direct others. It made quick work for us as well as for our friends and family helping us. In fact I was unloading kitchen designated boxes and putting things away to make quick work of such a critical room while boxes were being moved by others. - Rhonda

We had a doula with our first and it was a great experience. Not only will she be a great advocate for you in a hospital setting, but she can help your husband know how to help you. That was one of the biggest reasons we hired a doula since it was our first baby and my husband had no experience (absolutely NONE!) with pregnancy, birth or babies. Choose a doula that you and Josh both feel comfortable with. Ours was also a massage therapist which was awesome! She even came to our house 2 weeks postpartum so both me and my husband could have massages.

I did the opposite - not knowing any better. My first delivery was terrible and I had pretty serious post partum. I fired my doctor. I really wanted nothing to do with the hospital the second time, but my husband was terrified something would go wrong. I got a new doctor plus a doula for the second one. It was such a better experience. I did better, baby did better, and nothing traumatic happened. I knew someone was on my side and would advocate for me. I also discussed my previous experience in depth before going ahead with the new doctor, so I knew we were on the same page.
