This one missed the mark for me by not ending the way I expected it to. Yes, good endings are satisfying, but this one felt a lot less satisfying than most, and any parallels you could draw to explain the MC's mindset lead you to diagnoses of depression and BPD. However, both the MC's depression and BPD get cured instantly at the end because someone tells him the equivalent of "Just don't be sad, bro.". I think the alternative would have felt a lot more satisfying and relatable.

He's not a robot, and was clearly impacted by the fact that he was an immortal being with no purpose. he basically suffered from bpd and depression and the great big solution was "have you thought of just not caring though". The rest of the anime I found compelling, great potential. The ending just left me disappointed.

These are real problems and I was refreshed to see them addressed in some form, but disappointed that everything was fixed by "just don't think about it bro".

He literally wanted to nuke the world, I think this goes beyond just saving humanity. He wanted to lay down his life because he’s old and turning rotten for the purpose of fighting evil, but just one speech about “don’t die” with people he spent a minuscule fraction of his life with and can’t relate to his existence with just convinced him out of not being a programmed warmonger.

This anime stayed generic for about seven episodes and then we got two episodes of absolute thought-provoking and dark story continent which was awesome! -his backstory about being created as a weapon, him surviving while all of his comrades died, unable to stop fighting due to the programming and eventually the madness that came with the contradiction of there not being a war for him to fight, and eventually him re-creating his dead comrades so they would attack humanity so that he could defeat them and have a purpose again! only to realize that that was incredibly not OK and so he had to kill them again before they could escape the pods and carry out his orders! And then the demon queen says “hey have you ever tried not being crazy?” and he was like “oh good idea I never thought of that” Bro WTF!?! 3/10 for being generic for most of it, and then giving us a false hope that we were about to get some thing awesome only for them to piss on it, in front of us!

That's when I stopped reading the Manga.. that ending was kind of out of left field.. especially with the portal being closed. In the manga it was set up as a much bigger deal of 'need the stone now or it's gone'. Then it changed to 'oh it wasn't really that important'. I think the story was meant to be a short run where he did in fact die, and they went back to the demon realm.. but it fell into the trap of being too popular and the editor/publisher wanted it to continue, so they had to switch it up a bit. So I stopped it there and have it in my head that the story ended.

@@JackEverton101 I would say they chickened out, but it does continue on with the new story arc with some of his old comrades still being alive, when he specifically stated in great detail how each one died. So I still would take it that the publisher wanted it to continue due to all the money being raked in and the author had to retcon a couple things at the end. Sadly this does happen quite a bit with light novels and manga. It's kind of like the old 90's anime serializations where it just kept going and going and going.. lol. The generic start seemed to be on purpose to make the flip at the end that more powerful and the darker aspects hit harder. I think Trigun was one of the earlier ones to do this. But yeah.. the switch of happy ending really blunted it.

i don't think people get the ending at all he wasn't actually programmed in the same way that computers or any other machine are he was conditioned to think that way but the conditioning wear off but he didn't realize it until the last episode OR he always had the ability to turn it off just never actually tried

I love the background story, but it is sad we do not see any signs of the advanced civilization, such as plastic, barely standing/fallen skyscrapers and whatever else that could last 2000 years. That would make what is practically an isekai show actually different and far more interesting.

It sounds like it might actually be 3000 years. By then most plastics have broken down to microplastics that are nigh impossible to refine back into plastic products again, most buildings not destroyed in the war will have collapsed from age, at which point the rubble is better repurposed as quarry material for new houses and metals for other tasks, like weaponsmithing and fittings for simpler things like chests and door frames. Why? Something like 90% of humanity was gone by the end of the first war, so high density housing would be a waste of materials. A lot of major technologies were lost, likely as the hubs for those things (Biolabs, Silicon production plants, hyperscale foundries, oil refineries and drilling sites, etc) were considered high value targets for the demons looking to weaken humanity. IRL an entire second planet of magic-equipped warriors could totally wreck our s*** that badly, especially when they're already united under 1 world government of their own, in this case under the demon aristocracy.
