If so, I wish you nothing but good luck!! Having those letters after your name, unfortunately, DOES make a difference to some people with higher end horses. They want to know that you're certified to work with their animal for their sport. The Farrier we use is a CJF, (Certified Journeyman Farrier), because some of our clients have high-end jumping and cross-country horses. I grew up with horses and have seen a million trimmings but it's been years now since I've seen one. As soon as I saw you start trimming with the knife I could distinctly smell that hoof!

I love the idea of the Saran Wrap for getting the feathers out of the way. Great idea! We also have a Belgian and I trim her feet. I’m not a farrier, but a longtime horse owner and I trim our own horses. I love watching your videos to learn more.

I had an old farrier who used to say that a horse has five hearts. The one in their chest and one in each of their feet (meaning the frogs). ♥️♥️🇨🇦

I have Percheron's. As with my own farrier, I appreciate the forethought you put into the trim to get the job done in as little time as possible due to the extreme weight on the other three weight-bearing legs. Lovely job; beautiful channel, sir.

Great job Caleb. Wouldn’t it be easier and make it faster for you to clean out the sole if you used a wider hoof knife? Also, why didn’t you rasp the hoof in the front or only half way vs, the entire front and sides of the hoof like usual? I know the feathers cover it but it hasn’t been until recently that I noticed you don’t rasp it all the way top to bottom and side to side. It looks so much more beautiful when you’re finished. Just curious. What credential are you hoping to receive if you pass your test? Thanks. ❤❤❤❤

What jumbo hooves! Very interesting. I don’t know how long a Ferrier can keep in the work force with all of the muscles & weight you have to carry from the horse.

You just explained what I’ve been asking for months on the Periople of the hoof. I’ve got a 20 yr old Percheron, 18.3 and around 2100. I’ve had him four months and have lost 14lbs trying to get jugheads feet up on a stand to rasp down all the flares he gets. You get the foot up and get about 3 strokes and he’s yanking it out of your hands and we start over. His former owner showed him as a driving team and when his pair passed away, he quit using him and stuck him in a stall for a year. Standing in nasty ass muck, it has taken a toll on his hoof walls. We’re just gona have to baby him along until new hoof drops down. THE BIGUNS WILL WEAR YOU OUT!!!

We Use a special grinder wheel or I use a ken onion work sharp

I used to shoe!!! Often seen farriers using the hoof wall offcut, to keep the feathers out of the way!!! Like a hair band if ya like!!!!

The knives @TheHoofGP uses are not really suitable for my job I have used those kind and there not quite what I like the knives I have are sharp enough to shave with lol my wife says I need to drink more water I tend to forget to eat and drink when I'm working lol

It looks like a possible old crack that’s filled in. Drafts are very well known to have those darn quarter cracks. It’s a bummer, but their weight is a disadvantage.

Have the utmost confidence that you will pass your certification test with flying colors. I have heard the American Mustangs and BC and Alberta Wildies have the best hoofs because, as you said they travel many, many miles over rough terrain all the time. Of course, once one of them is adopted then the owner needs to start a regular schedule of hoof maintenance. Does the diet of the horse affect the quality of its hoof material? One of the channels I watch has the horses on pasture 24/7 all Summer...so grass...but, in the winter when the pastures are frozen over the horses get haylage and pelleted supplements. They've not spoken about the hoof health...they do have a farrier that services the horses, but he's never on camera. Just wondering. Thanks for another good, good video. 🤗

I really enjoyed watching this... one of my daughters works on a farm in pa. and they deal only in freishans. for sale, for shows, and daughter does the breeding, semen, farm mgr at times, etc. She has only 1 horse now who stands 17h high...thanks caleb

What about using a cloth elastic tensor band - the sort used to gently brace a sprained knee or ankle for people who have pain or weakness in those joints - instead of the Saran plastic wrap? There’d be an initial price for the new tensor bands, but they last forever and are washable. Plastic wrap is awful for the environment.
