Thank you, Calab!! I love it when you do these longer videos. And it also now gives you the chance to practice your terms for your test. Are you doing the CJF test? If so, I wish you nothing but good luck!! Having those letters after your name, unfortunately, DOES make a difference to some people with higher end horses. They want to know that you're certified to work with their animal for their sport. The Farrier we use is a CJF, (Certified Journeyman Farrier), because some of our clients have high-end jumping and cross-country horses. They've gone now for the winter but will be back in the spring.Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

Great job Caleb. Wouldn’t it be easier and make it faster for you to clean out the sole if you used a wider hoof knife? Also, why didn’t you rasp the hoof in the front or only half way vs, the entire front and sides of the hoof like usual? I know the feathers cover it but it hasn’t been until recently that I noticed you don’t rasp it all the way top to bottom and side to side. It looks so much more beautiful when you’re finished. Just curious. What credential are you hoping to receive if you pass your test? Thanks. ❤❤❤❤

You just explained what I’ve been asking for months on the Periople of the hoof. I’ve got a 20 yr old Percheron, 18.3 and around 2100. I’ve had him four months and have lost 14lbs trying to get jugheads feet up on a stand to rasp down all the flares he gets. You get the foot up and get about 3 strokes and he’s yanking it out of your hands and we start over. His former owner showed him as a driving team and when his pair passed away, he quit using him and stuck him in a stall for a year. Standing in nasty ass muck, it has taken a toll on his hoof walls. We’re just gona have to baby him along until new hoof drops down. THE BIGUNS WILL WEAR YOU OUT!!!

Have the utmost confidence that you will pass your certification test with flying colors. I have heard the American Mustangs and BC and Alberta Wildies have the best hoofs because, as you said they travel many, many miles over rough terrain all the time. Of course, once one of them is adopted then the owner needs to start a regular schedule of hoof maintenance. Does the diet of the horse affect the quality of its hoof material? One of the channels I watch has the horses on pasture 24/7 all Summer...so grass...but, in the winter when the pastures are frozen over the horses get haylage and pelleted supplements. They've not spoken about the hoof health...they do have a farrier that services the horses, but he's never on camera. Just wondering. Thanks for another good, good video. 🤗

What about using a cloth elastic tensor band - the sort used to gently brace a sprained knee or ankle for people who have pain or weakness in those joints - instead of the Saran plastic wrap? There’d be an initial price for the new tensor bands, but they last forever and are washable. Plastic wrap is awful for the environment.
