The Etkin Design 8 Cup Dripper is really nice. Not only does it make a lot of coffee but it makes good coffee! Now you can have quantity and quality.

Great review! Your review was about the dripper itself, but it may be relevant to know that the company has intent to source the best material for the design, as well as positively impact the people and community where the porcelain is sourced and the product is made. Geniunely kind dudes who also share a unique comination of passion for coffee and design.

Great tip on the no pre rinse. I dialed my K-Plus past its coursest setting and was still stalling and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Plus the coffee had characteristics of being both under AND over extracted, as strange as that may sound due to the absolute coarseness of the grind that still stalled out the brewer. It under extracted initially and then as it stalled, it over extracted. In the same pour. Gah! But I love this brewer.

Great video! I bought one of these and had the same issue you did. I will give it a try with the filter dry as you suggest. I may also try some cloth basket filters. I have a couple of cloth filters I use with other drippers and they work great, Thanks again!

I would have liked to know a bit more about the brewing method. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but I rewound the video (dust off your cassettes, Betamax, vhs, reel to reel, etc kids) and it appears you just dumped the water in and waited 5 mins? Was there say, an initial 100g pour to wet the grounds, let them bloom, then separate pours from the kettle? Or just dump and go?
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
😂 I love the vhs reference! You’re correct I didn’t really show all the pours, I was trying to save time in the video and I thought the way I explained that the method was like a normal pour over would make sense, but I can see now how it might not. I do a multiple pour recipe like with any pour over. Here is a link to the brew method I use when I use this dripper: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3-zfGN7rdN2sJY

Off topic from the etkin, but you mentioned the Orea V3 I'm curious if you have a go to brew recipe for it you'd recommend.
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Yes! The Orea is my typical go to brewer when making single batches or wanting to push higher extractions. I don’t really do anything cray or much different from anybody else when it comes to recipes. I typically brew a 15/250gm or 1:16 ratio dose. Depending on the coffee I’ll set my grind to target around a 2:30-2:35 brew time, and I’ll set my water temp depending on the coffee process merges and roast level. For lighter coffees I typically use a hotter water temp and I would recommend a lower temp if you’re using a medium/darker roast. Also if it’s a funky process method like anaerobic, carbonic maceration, or any kind of longer fermentation process, no matter the roast level I typically brew those at a lower temp too. As for pouring I do a 30-45gm bloom for about 30sex +/- depending on the age of the coffee, and then I use a Melodrip form my remaining pours. I usually just break up my remaining total pour weight into 2 or 3 pours. After the last pour I’ll give a gentle swirl to flatten out the bed. This usually works really well for me!

The whole diameter of the brewer is right around 5”, the center area around the hole the coffee flows out of is about 2.5” or so but I haven’t specifically measured that part.

Hey A, I wanted your honest opinion on that large Ceramic flat Brewer. I do a 8 cup chemex with 54G Every morning the thing I don't like that it can really good somedays and not so good other days I'd rather have many better days. Being that I'm super ill And very little patience I don't want to invest in that other Brewer to find that it's horrible. I mostly use light rose Ethiopian Africans. So I know you did a video on it I hope you will be candid with me I would appreciate it. I would love to try the origami but it only goes up to 30 g. ! ALSO No pre rinsing filter doesn't that leave a horrible taste added and the small hole to exit well that over extract the coffee??
@coffeenerdaaron

My review of this brewer are my real thoughts, Etkin did not pay me to make this video. For large batches I really like this brewer. Now I don’t use it super often cause I don’t make large batches that frequently but when I do I’d much rather use this than any other brewer.

Great video - I've never heard of this brewer before. I also find it difficult to batch brew with single-serve pour over equipment, so this was really interesting! I was considering getting an 8 or 10 cup Chemex - curious of your thoughts comparing this brewer vs. a similarly sized Chemex? Thanks!
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! To be honest I’m not a fan of the Chemex personally but I know lots of people like them. I do own one and used it a lot many years ago… it’s a flower vase now! 😂 My issue with the Chemex is that the filter gets folded in a way that it’s got more layers on one side which can cause uneven extraction. You have a slower flow of water through part of the filter vs the other. Also I prefer flat bottom brewers to conical brewers, you get a much more even extraction through the coffee bed. I’m sure there are work arounds or recipes for the Chemex that are great and I know people get good cups from them, however the first cup I brewed with the Etkin brewer was better than anything I ever brewed with the Chemex 😝🤘☕️

I have a 10 cup chemex that I use every morning for two. It definitely has its quirks, and annoyances, but I do love the way it looks!🎉 I'm trying to transition to a flat bottom approach but I'm having a hard time finding equipment that allows for brewing a liter of coffee. Kettles, carafes, and brewers all seem geared toward single servings. Thanks for this as well as the two cup dripper video! The search continues!

I wonder how this compares to the stagg xf
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
I have a Stagg X (not the XF), but they are different. Using a large dose of coffee like you would in the Etkin in an XF would make for a pretty deep coffee bed depth. The idea behind the Etkin is that you can brew a large batch and maintain a more desirable coffee bed depth for more even extraction. That’s not to say you can’t get a good cup from the Stagg, it’s just different 😊

@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
To be honest I don’t know, I don’t know what size the opening on the top of the carafe is. The total diameter of the Etkin is around 5” but the area in the center where toe coffee comes out has about a 2” diameter lip if memory serves. If the top of the carafe is about the same size as most other coffee carafes then unfortunately it will probably not fit.

@mjbutterworth
@mjbutterworth 2 жыл бұрын
We've had lots of requests for a plastic version. It's not something we've ruled out for the future, though we have a lot to learn about plastic first before we're comfortable putting a product out in the world. We learned in the process of making our porcelain dripper that many plastic drippers are made with plastic with relatively low melting points. Kind of problematic when you're repeatedly using boiling hot water.

I think the temperature stability on this dripper might surprise you. A 1L batch has much more thermal mass than a 250 ml batch. So if you compare the temperature stability of an Etkin Brew to a plastic single cup dripper, the Etkin wins every time :)
