Man City were the only side attempting to win the match within the 90 minutes, with Real Madrid defending for their lives. It proved to be enough as the game was decided by a Rudiger penalty, after Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic missed their penalties.

I have to disagree on one point: the Champions League is a significantly more difficult competition to win than the Premier League, or any other league for that matter. There's a reason 99% of teams won more leagues than Champions Leagues. The Champions League is ruthless. It doesn't allow room for error as the league does. In the league, you can lose a game 7-0 and still have full chances of lifting the title. Lose 7-0 in a UCL quarterfinal, you're out. In the UCL, you gotta have the mentality and concentration to win specific games. In the league, with good swuad depth and tactics, you will win enough games to lift the title. In the UCL, that isn't always enough, and Pep should know best after Inter Milan 2010, Chelsea 2012, Lyon 2020, Chelsea 2021, Madrid 2022 and now last night

I disagree. In the UCL you can get a favorable group and then get lucky side of knockout draws on your way to the final while avoiding some top teams. But in the league you have to be the absolute best over 38 games, you cannot avoid any team, you have to play them twice. In the UCL you can get a lucky goal and defend for your life but that isn’t sustainable in a league format. UCL involves more luck, the league involves you being the best consistently.

@@libby4608 you actually do avoid teams in the league. City doesn't have to play against Real Madrid to win the league. They don't have to play against Bayern Munich or Barcelona. And you're not gonna get a lucky goal at every stage of the tournament. Not to mention that, in practice, it pretty much never happens that a team wins the UCL without playing any top team. Just look at the last 20 campaigns including this one and you'll see you always have to play top teams. And even in the league where you do play all the other best teams in that league, you're not required to do much. City didn't win against Arsenal, didn't win against Liverpool, didn't win against Chelsea, didn't win against Tottenham, but they'll still win the league. In the UCL, that won't get you anywhere, you're required to win, you can't draw/lose against the best teams and still win it.

I do not blame the players. May be I can blame Pep a bit. Madrid defended very well. They know (like nobody else) how to park bus. City should have fielded Kovacic-Rodri pair (like a week ago) and Doku+Grealish playing together and stretching the RMA defense. Perhaps Oscar Bobb a a substitute

Madrid actually dominated City, which is even funnier. No main GK, two main CB with ACL injury, no defensive midfielder and no starting striker yet guys over 30 like Carvajal, Nacho and Rüdiger were the ones keeping Grealish, Foden, Silva and Haaland silent for almost the entire game. City generated an embarassing 2.7 xG in 33 shots over 120 minutes. RM forced City wide all game and City despite passing the ball a thousand times, did not know how to penetrate into the box. Doku was the only one who truly made the difference and created clear cut chances that were not solely influenced by mistakes from defenders. Even Henry said that City barely had clear cut chances. They were mostly generated from small mistakes by Madrid. I remember Man City parking the bus against Atleti after being up a goal and no one complained. Man City scored the same amount of goals as Real Madrid over both legs. Madrid put up a 90s Italian defensive masterclass. They won the pen shootout because of Rüdiger, Kepa and Lunin, they won on a tactical level. Madrid dominated both legs by scoring early and taking the lead or scoring quick after Man City scored. Man City never led in the tie for more than 10 minutes, over 2 matches. They were constantly chasing the score whilst Madrid when scoring were able to defend their lead for way longer. Madrid were actually better offensively for scoring goals with less chances and defensively for not allowing to be scored against despite City's posession. Having the ball most of the time and playing like clowns with 33 shots resulting in 1 goal sounds worse than old school Italian defending. The only one I truly respect, is suprisingly Doku. He wasn't tapdancing then passing the ball back unlike Grealish but actually risked losing the ball by creating bigger chances.

Madrid lead both legs for 116 minutes while City managed only 18 minutes. RM had them where they wanted most fo the time, when they had to score they did when they had to defend they did. Why should RM play the way City wanted? Madrid adapted to the game conditions something City are incapable of doing as they are one dimensional

Really proud of the team, that we left it all out there last night. There can't be many teams over the years that have forced the mighty Real Madrid to resort to 'parking the bus' - which just goes to show how far we have come as a club ! 💪 Also don't forget to remind any rival fans going on about 'history' this morning, that in previous years we would have gone through 4-4 on aggregate. Perhaps most disappointing was the (typically) horrendously biased headline on BBC website "Man City's Treble dreams left in tatters by Real" - which hardly bothered to give City any credit for their performance. Contrast that with the tone of their corresponding headline from last week for the woeful 0-3 loss by their beloved LIV'pool - "Liverpool suffer shock home defeat by Atalanta". Nothing about 'Klopps Last Season Left In Tatters..!' Anyway, I just hope that the team can now recover enough to be able to put up a decent contest with Chelsea on Saturday (when we should have been playing the Sunday Wembley fixture)..! It is going to be an even tougher game for us after last night. C'mon City..!

Remember Man City are the ONLY team to defend the treble. Man Utd - if you recall- thought their treble SOOO important, they dropped out of the FA Cup the following season. Devaluing the trophy for years. It took another team-Man City - to win the treble then DEFEND it to bring the reputation of the FA Cup back to what it was The FA(& Premier League) owe us - big time!

Actually, it was a great offensive performance by RM. They were way more efficient than City. They needed 3 shots on target to get a goal, City needed 9, so in relative terms, way better offensively. Possession doesn't make history. Lifting the trophy does 😂😂 RM scored when they had to and defended when they had to, meanwhile City was passing the ball sideways

Thanks for putting this into perspective. You are the only channel who I trust to listen to ATM, as it’s still hurting inside. We put on a strong performance but couldn’t capitalize before penalties… the wrong moment for it to happen. Let the MU fans and the like enjoy their moment as it’s the only straws they have to grasp. We still have a lot to play for! We are seeing a trend of very compact parked defenses even the great RM. Opponents are protecting the very pockets of spaces that Pep likes to exploit. We need to continue to grow and evolve tactically even with small adjustments. Maybe a way of more direct and accelerated play breaking the lines? I know we do attempt to when opportunities present, but the overall priority on possession can actually make it difficult to take the risk (we don’t want to give possession/counters to opponents) so tough to assess. Time to be proud… Cmon City!

I obviously don’t want to pin blame on anybody, I love all of the City players and I appreciate how hard they were working yesterday. But is anyone else wondering why Rodri didn’t a pen? I obviously understand that Pep never intended to go to pens so he took Haaland and KDB off with the intention of winning in 120 minutes, but I still think with the 11 men on the pitch, some of the pen taker choices were a bit weird. I’m also certain they’ve figured out the best pen takers on the training ground, I really feel it’s impossible to replicate the feeling and you really need the players who are most composed in the big moments. That is Rodri 100%. Regardless, love the message of the video, I still wore my city jersey proud the rest of the day, I don’t think you’d see a United fan go out of a tournament and keep the shirt on. I feel the "league is harder to win than the ucl" points you make are kinda double edged. You say league is harder to win because you need consistency and there's less luck involved, but imo that weeds out the smaller clubs, they're gonna have a harder time to win a league because they don't have the consistency and that makes it harder for them, so it makes it easier for big clubs. On the other hand, with a tournament knock out based competition, you say it's easier because you can get lucky, but that makes it easier for smaller teams and gives them a bigger chance of an upset and that reduces the chance of big clubs to win it and therefore can be harder for them, so imo it balances out. You can't really say ucl is easier than the league when every club that won the ucl has even more leagues won. Just my opinion on the matter, good vid man. Still not sold on Doku but hope he proves me wrong in Pep’s second season syndrome. Yes he played well last night no debate but he reminds me of Sterling. Unplayable on his day but so inconsistent with end product and it’s that extra creavitity we’ve been missing (for our standards) all season.
