Sky's Toccata is from 1980. Sky were: John Williams (classical and electric guitars) / Kevin Peek (RIP) (Classical and electric guitars) / Herbie Flowers (bass and tuba) / Francis Monkman (RIP) (harpsichord, piano, clavinet, Prophet 5 and OB1 synths) / Tristan Fry (drums, tuned and untuned percussion). The unjustifiably popular Toccata in D minor (as played on the pipe organ) has, for far too many years, been gravely misattributed to JS Bach which is an insult both to Bach and the organ repertoire. Sky's version is by far the best and most exciting arrangement, and is the only way I'll listen to it (and I'm an organist). The intro up to when the drums enter is note for note for the organ piece. The remainder is extended and added. Kevin Peek did the arrangement - and for it we are extremely grateful! One of those instances where the "cover" vastly improves upon the "original". The first 2 Sky albums still remain among my favourite of all time, such stunning and perfect musicianship. Francis Monkman in particular was one of my earliest keyboard heroes.

Bach composed many toccatas, and many fugues. This one is known as Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565.

What memories. I was fortunate enough as a teenager to be mentored by Francis…and would meet the band….they were all so generous. Francis arranged for us to record at Abbey Road. We were only 15 I think. Happy days. So sad that Kevin and Francis have passed away…..the music though to hear and play made a huge impact. The Albert Hall gigs in London were the very best. Very grateful and humbled to have known them….

The accoustic guitarist, Johm Williams, might be more known to USA listeners as the guitarist in thr soundtrack to the epic film "The Deer Hunter"

The original by JS Bach is about 12 minutes long. This is Sky's arrangement of the piece in 4 minutes. You really should listen to the original classical piece for better understanding.

I still remember when I heard this piece on the radio. A quick search says it was released in 1980 and the band's biggest hit. BTW, the German Thrash Metal band Mekong Delta also "covered" a Toccata, yet not this one by Bach (which might be the best-known of all Toccatas there are), but one by Alberto Ginastera. Since you said you love hearing classical music being played on rock instruments, you should check it out some time - just for yourself. If you do, also check out Mekong Delta's "covers" of Modest Mussorgsky's "The Hut of Baba Yaga", "Gnomus" and "Night on a Bare Mountain" as well as their rendition of "Allegro" (2nd movement of Shostakovich's Symphony no. 10). They covered a few more classical pieces. Their very classical sounding "Interludium" is acutally a cover of the theme of "Psycho". Their band leader and bassist Ralph Hubert, who also plays classical guitar, is a huge fan of classical music, which might explain why he composed the title track of their album "Dances of Death" as a rondo (to my knowledge the first and so far only Thrash Metal piece written in this form).

It has over 43 million views on her channel and you mentioned them not tapping the notes in Toccata. Wait till you see what Tina does...
