2:32 Wait a minute. D&RGW bought out SP, but took on the SP name. Then in 1996, "SP" bought out UP, and took on the UP name... Oh my word...do you know what this means?!(End of Golden Wind/il vento d'oro Orchestra ques) Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, neither of them made it to present day! THE WHOLE TIME, IT WAS THE D&RGW!! *_THE DENVER & RIO GRANDE WESTERN NEVER DIEEEEES!!!_* Edit: I am a moron. UP bought SP, not the other way around. Nevermind... Edit 2: Hyce confirmed it...it's all still owned by the Rio Grande...THE LEGENDS ARE TRUE!!!!

That sort of happened in western Canada in the 1990s, CN kept running out of grain boxcars even though Manitoba had just paid to have a bunch of them repaired (the 'Buffalo Boxcars'). The Hudson Bay Route Association took out some newspaper ads in the form of a "Wanted: Reward" poster which asked readers to report the location and numbers of 40' boxcars they saw in out of the way sidings.

Even with computerized billing and AEI scanners everywhere we still manage to lose and misroute cars on a regular basis. One of the more egregious examples in recent memory happened during December 2008 and January 2009, Canadian National was supposed to move a damaged dangerous tank car with a cracked frame from the Union Pacific interchange in Chicago to the Procor car shop in Sarnia, Ontario. The waybill from UP not only contained the familiar "DO NOT HUMP" instruction, it required that this car only be moved on the very tail end of a train. CN of course did not set out the car in Sarnia, instead we sent it to Toronto where it went over MacMillan Yard's dual hump six (6) times over the course of a two week stay. Then we lost the waybill somehow and whipped up a new one which directed the car to Winnipeg instead (get it outta here!). After arriving at Symington Yard we humped it again. After several days in Loserpeg we finally remembered that it was supposed to go to Sarnia and drew up another fresh waybill, but this time we deleted the "move as tail end car" instructions. So it was marshaled in the middle of an eastbound manifest, which made it about 15 miles before the crack gave way and the first few feet of the car's centre sill were ripped off. This incident is the subject of Canadian TSB investigation report R09W0016 if you'd like to read more about it or see some pictures.

HOLY CRAP HOLD ON A SECOND!!!! I was born in Albuquerque NM, and lived there until 2000. I remember seeing a Rio Grande caboose come through going south (westbound) at some point, but I cannot for the life of me remember when that was. I wonder if that was this one?

The saga of that caboose could make a great comedy movie. 🤣 Add some spice by having crooks have hidden stolen loot in the walls of caboose and they're racing to find it to get it before it's scrapped. Then à la "Mad Mad Mad World" people overhear conversations about the loot so the number of people chasing down the caboose keeps growing. Finally it's tracked down to Barstow and they find Hunter S. Thompson living in the caboose and has spent all the money. 😁

This sort of thing has happened a few times over the years on different railroads, sometimes it's a hard run-in of slack that throws a car off the rails. Air brakes go into emergency and the train stops, then the brakeman walks back expecting to find a broken knuckle but instead sees the train separated with no obvious derailment or damage and two intact couplers. He couples the two halves back together, the train proceeds on its merry way and the missing car isn't noticed until the train arrives at its final terminal.

When mainline next to my museum was being rebuilt, one of our cars (don´t know what it was but it had NO BRAKES for some reason and we wedged it between two cars that had them but they weren´t there at that time because of some shunting carnage) rolled out through the track that connects our museum to the mainline into the construction site where it eventually stopped. It was on a weekend so noone was working there that day and nobody noticed the car until monday when the constructionworkers found it half a kilometer away from the museum. We were lucky that this happened in the early 2000s when I was a kidand safety whasn´t taken that serious so we didn´t face any serious consequences so in the end everything was ok.

4:08 - I thought it's one caboose, two cabeese? =P 9:15 - Sounds totally like a railway, yes. 14:00 - They threw the keys in the dirt "dayshift's problem!"? That's absolutely hilarious. Even with all the differences in system, technology, mentality, structure, social/political/economical conditions around - at the end of the day, the railroad is a railway, too. I have a feeling this story could happen in any system as soon as it has more than three stations.
