i have a open world and i am mining exotics there tho, I didint even do the missions to unlock them??

I have some things unlocked but it wont let me take them in. Is there a secret to equipping them in my ship before I start a mission?

You need to put the items in to your loadout in your drop ship after you've crafted them in the work shop.

how do you retrieve the items from the workshop when I crafted a backpack it said it was in my inventory can’t find it

It's in your loadout in the space station, you can view it either by being back at the menu screen or via the orbital exchange interface.
