Tommy James & The Shondells are an American pop rock / psychedelic rock band from the 60's. They had a lot of great hits such as "Hanky Panky", "Crimson & Clover", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mirage", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Ball Of Fire", "Do Something To Me" & "Crystal Blue Persuasion". When Tommy went solo in the 70's "Draggin' The Line" & "Three Times In Love" were hits for him.

One day, decades ago, Tommy James and the Shondells secretary took a phone call in the bands West coast office. As she hung up, Tommy asked her; "Who was that" She replied, "Some East coast promoter. He offered us a paying gig in the Western part of New York, on a pigs farmer farm. I turned him down Tommy" They both started laughing at what they thought was a ridiculous idea, picturing playing for an audience and for some pigs who just wandered on in. They weren't laughing 2 weeks later that summer in 1969, when they heard the story of an arts and music festival that just finished in Western New York on Max Yasgers farm. A cow and pig farmer. Yup, "Woodstock", Tommy forgave his secretary.

The song was released in June 1971. I remember it well, I was 12 years old. Best summer ever. The song finished at #64 on NYC’s 77 WABC radio’s top 100 of 1971.

That bass is pure ear candy. Always reminds me of those hot summer North Carolina days growing up in the 90s and jumping into the cool waters of Cherokee while camping. You've got to do "Crimson and Clover" next. Just pure psychodelic perfection.

Tommy's a fabulous songwriter, still writing amazing stuff to this day. His voice is as good as ever. This is a simple song, but he can do so much more. A MAJOR talent that gets overlooked too often. His memoir is fabulous, too, about his involvement with the record business and organized crime. A must-read!

So great to hear he is still going strong. Huge TJ and The Shondells fan. First trip to Atlantic Beach NC with my first crush and this song was playing on rock AM radio. Ya'll remember rock AM radio, right? Here's to rock on WKIX I In Raleigh, NC back in the day. Later, it was WQDR album rock station. Great songs. Great memories.

The "jukebox musical" has been a sBroadway staple for years -- shows have been crafted around the songs of the Temptations, the Four Seasons, the Talking Heads, Alanis Morrisette, etc etc. I can think of 2 bands with a deep roster of hits just waiting to be rediscovered by modern audiences: Tommy James & the Shondelles and Three Dog Night. Joni Mitchell is better known and more critically acclaimed ... and her poetic, sensual, autobiographical songs could serve as the script on their own.

I love Tommy James (with and without the Shondells). This song has such a great vibe. If you guys haven't reacted to some of the great hits from Tommy James and the Shondells, you must. Crimson and Clover, Sweet Cherry Wine, Crystal Blue Persuasion, I Think We're Alone Now, Mirage, Mony Mony, Hanky Panky, Ball of Fire, etc. I'd start with Crimson and Clover... be sure to get the full-length album version (> 5 minutes). The very first rock album I bought as a kid was the Best of Tommy James and the Shondells. Great stuff.

Hey Catherine, maybe serendipity here. I was just watching some KZbin videos about the miraculous effect familiar music can have in bringing life back to alzheimer patients, at least for a while. Folks who were very agitated, memory gone and just out of it come to life when they hear music from their early life, like for your MIL it might be WWII music, Frank S, Bing etc. For me it will be the Beatles, John Denver, the Beach Boys. You could search KZbin for maybe "music for dementia patients". What's been done in some nursing homes is incredible.

@Gail, small world isn’t it. I lived off Amsterdam in the 180’s, but use to go over to Riverside Park just south of the GW Bridge to play football. One of the unknown treasures we were lucky to have was Fort Tryon Park. Up there was the cool Medieval museum castle we use to play in too, back then it was free. Not many people still know of it today. Great place to grow up. Frankie Lymon was from the Heights although they mistakenly say he was from Harlem. They need to get into his music!
