One of the most underrated bands of the late '60s and early '70s. They had a mountain of hits including "Sweet Cherry Wine" (Fire!), "Crimson and Clover", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mirage", "Mony Mony", "Tighter Tighter", "Crystal Blue Persuasion", "Ball of Fire." Tommy James and the Shondells were offered to play the Woodstock Festival in '69, but they declined it, not realizing what a monumental event it would be. Not a great career move. A shame. I wear concert shirts almost every day, and all it takes is one person at the supermarket to say to me "Hey, great shirt!" and it makes my day.

Back in the mid 80s, when we used to make mix tapes, I wanted to put Crimson and Clover on one. So I bought a copy of Tommy James & the Shondells Greatest Hits at a used record store and it blew my mind. SO many great songs I’d heard and loved while growing up in the 70s and didn’t realize it was all Tommy James & the Shondells.

Tommy James/Tommy James & The Shondells are 1960's and early 1970's treasure. So many great hits. Many other people had hits with their songs. Tommy James also wrote hits for other bands too. They are an under-appreciated band. Definitely take a deep dive with them. So many great memories from my childhood.

He did a lot of really progressive stuff at the time. For better or worse, Tommy James and the Shondells are the soundtrack of my junior high years, when our parents moved us all over the country while they figured out whether to be divorced or not. Great music. Music IS a time machine.

Tommy James was mostly late 60s, into the early 70s. So many of his songs were covered later, "Crimson and Clover" (by Joan Jett), "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mony Mony" all hits in the 80s by others. And BIZ....yeah doing these is giving back, thanx Bro

Thank you very much, Biz! I had forgotten about this band. So much great music from the 60's that still hasn't even been put out on YT, or anywhere else, but really needs to be, for all to enjoy! No, drug use in the 60's was NOWHERE near what's going on now! Exact opposite. People had to work and be productive, or starve! Parents were NOT letting their children mooch off of them, we were all taught to get out of parents' houses at 18 years old, because we were considered grown! Back then 18 year old's were drafted (my oldest brother was one of them) into the military, had no choice. Wasn't any of this, I'm just going to sit on my as$ and do nothing, live off my parents, and lie, cheat, steal from others, because of laziness! There was drug use, but NOT MASSIVE drug use back then.

Fantastic reaction to Tommy James. A worthy rabbit hole from the 60s and 70s. His full length versions of his hits, as suggested by other commenters, is rewarding. At first listen it may be confusing. And you are correct with a blunt and a glass of nice wine or a cool beer it’ll take you places.

Tommy James was a very big deal with many hits and screaming girls and everything. He wrote a biography called Me, the Mob, and the Music. Turned out his 'record company' was actually the mob trying to cash in on this new rock music. Of course they knew very very little about being a record company which damaged his career a lot in spite of all of his hits. He experienced a resurgence in the 80's when some of his songs became hits for other new artists - Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett, I Think We're Alone Now by Tiffany was a huge hit, and Mony Mony by Billy Idol cemented his career as a rocker. My band does Draggin the Line (as well as some other Tommy James songs) and I'm always a little tickled to see how many people are singing along. Good, fun music.

This is Tommy James as a solo artist. Everybody makes this mistake but if you lived through that time, it is a simple thing to know. He had a few good ones AFTER the Shondells but the best of his music was with his group which is very worthwhile checking out.

You're a good man Biz. Great reaction. I believe the term "Dragging the line" was just another way of saying "Tooling along" I believe Tommy was simply singing about taking a little time out from life's routine with his best friend Sam to enjoy some of nature's solitude.

Yes !...the 60's were the time of new electronic experimentation..the music was tempered with pot or acid (acid rock was huge) and the musically minded created unheard avenues ...the 70's became more cultured in the new sounds..an example would be The Moody Blues...more orchestras..horns..The Electric Light Orchestra...flutes with Ian Anderson with Jethro Tull...even solo singers mixed cultures in their sounds..Tom Jones with Delilah had a mariachi sound (Mexican)..and he's Welsh !..lol...Stevie Wonder also added new sounds..same with many others... I'll close by saying my 70 years have been blessed to have heard the best modern music...such a shame we can't just dump it all at once into newer listener's head..though it looks like y'all are doing your best to catch up...😉👍...🌿🌿🌿
