Consultation closed today for a proposed extension to oil drilling at the Broadford Bridge site near Billingshurst in West Sussex. Campaigners,
led by Actors James Bolam and Sue Jameson, rallied outside West Sussex County Hall and handed in a giant postcard from objectors to WSCC Director of Economy, Infrastructure and Environment Lee Harris. The actors called on people to object before it is too late:

Jimmy, in spite of my comments about you. I stand by my original comments. (A) you have brought pleasure to millions of people, like me in the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties . 25 years ago I attended a lecture on “ Climate Change “ in the then Liverpool Polytechnic School. Now known as the John Moore’s University. EVERYTHING that guy said has come true. Three words were added to my lexicon, “ Extreme Weather Events. “I saw with my own eyes, the German attitude to Climate Change 50 years ago. They already had a great sense of what we were about to experience. As a consequence were doing something about it. I am lucky to live very near to Snowdonia National Park. WHY do people lust after “ things “ which at best give you transient pleasure. Then they want another “ thing “ MADNESS. I just thank God I am a simple guy, Rucksack on his back, and I am in Nature, which I NEVER tire of. Finally we live in a small overcrowded Island, we are only the Custdodions of it. It’s during our tenure we have a DUTY to pass it on in good order.

@@longasaya it’s not hard to access footage from Rodney Bewes himself that Bolam permanently ostracised him after a 1976 interview by Bewes that Bolam felt was indiscreet. The vendetta was relentless and spiteful to the extent that Bolam refused ever to allow repeats of The Likely Lads which would have greatly eased financial pressure on Bewes who, unlike Bolam, never made it big and struggled to manage in his later years. Bolam is a cantankerous piece of work but this environmental campaigning certainly is laudable (and his wife Susan is a delightful lady who is every bit as sincere as this clip would suggest).

@@gerardmackay8909 In interviews in his final years Rodney Bewes would often claim that James Bolam had vetoed repeats of the series. The reality, however, was that, since the series finished its run in 1974, episodes from both versions of the sitcom had been repeated on BBC One or Two in 1975, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004, plus 2013 and 2015, in addition to countless re-runs on the satellite channels, as well as numerous repeats of the BBC radio adaptations, and have remained an option in terms of subsequent mainstream repeats. Bolam said, "How could I do that? I can't stop repeats. A, I get paid for them, which is very nice, and B, there's no way I could do that even if I'd wanted to."

In Sue & James’s case ‘no’. They were involved initially in campaigning against Celtique Energie’s proposal to exploratory drill between Wisborough Green & Kirdford. That campaign was successful & after discovering how futile & destructive the process is in small villages around the U.K they decided to ‘continue’ to campaign with other groups against other proposals for unsuitable sites. Don’t forget that hydraulic fracturing in the U.K is merely a ponzi scheme to gain huge investment to artificially inflate the financial attributes of companies portfolios, and the cost............destroying local ecology, endangering the progression & sustainability of flora & fauna, not to mention the corrosion of community cohesion. These cowboys move in, gain investment from non local investors, wreck the beautiful landscape, fail to provide any long term energy needs, then keep investors ‘on the hook’ for the ‘big payoff’ down the road. It’s nothing more than a glorified pyramid scheme where the average Joe foots the Bill for corporate gain all the while destroying the countryside. Jameson & Bolam among others have used their celebrity status to highlight the issue & have done a sterling job. Their input had ‘nothing’ to do with personal gain from property devaluation. As I started the initial campaign that was successful at Wisborough green I can tell you that as a matter of ‘fact’. I obviously can not speak for others that ‘may’ have asset protectionism as part of a wider agenda, but in ‘this’ instance, no.

Ironic that Susan Jameson expresses concern for the environment and it effects on her grandchildren. She's never met and couldn't care less about 4 of her grandchildren - the offspring of the son Nigel she had out of wedlock and gave up for adoption in 1960. Nigel reached out to her, his birth mother, as an adult, and after one polite meeting (with her only other child, a daughter with James Bolam) she told him she didn't feel like a mother to him and washed her hands of him! I have met these two - they are as cold and aloof a couple as you'll ever meet. I doubt they care a toss about the environment, this will all be self serving and to do with the value of their houses and the 'environment' as it affects the area immediately around them! Selfish, awful, hard faced pair - I don't believe a word they say. "By their deeds shall ye know them". Nuff said!

Lovely couple, and great actors, but they really haven't a clue what they are talking about. No doubt they drove down in petrol or diesel vehicles, heat their homes with fossil fuels, are wearing cloths made from synthetic petroleum based fibres, have many plastic objects in their home, fly in planes for their holidays and travel, wear petroleum based makeup, yet they don't want anybody drilling in their backyard. Yes, if would be great not to rely on fossil fuels and do less drilling, but we don't have viable alternatives to replace everything and all the by products we rely upon, yet. FYI there are no radioactive substances placed in drilling fluids, we have far far stricter environmental rules and regulations than in the US, in the areas they talk about the zones of interest are nowhere near the aquifers.

We need oil,and we need land for houses. The obvious places to drill for oil and build houses is where the countryside is. I agree that there may be a bit of inconvenience during the building and drilling, but you can't please everyone all the time. And as for the wildlife, well,we still have the zoo's.
