We had a new (his 1st year) young auto shop teacher in high school back in 83/84. Great, smart guy. Had a great time with him there. Our first day he said "Guys, everything, everything and everything in a car will be electronically controlled very soon. Anyone can swap out an engine. Become awesome at diagnostics/troubleshooting and you will always be in the money!" He was exactly right. Eric at SMA is very good at it. He also says Chevy trucks are gonna put his kids thru college!

In 1988 I went through the Diesel Tech program at Wyoming Tech and they were saying the same thing about electronics and computers. The instructors were able to bring in a new IH 4300 with a Detroit 60 series engine with some of the new computerized components. Little did we know at the time that was the future for diesel techs!!

My sons duramax downshift to first gear on the freeway, truck went skidding across all 4 lanes, he was able to get it off the freeway without getting hit. By the way, the truck was brand new! Chevy replaced the trans, but it didn't end there, first the alt, then the power steering pump, anyway even dealer agreed that all the accessories were oversped, not too long after the engine started knocking. Chevrolet bought the truck back. Then he bought a 05 Dodge with Cummins. Still running strong.

That's a safety issue. You might consider filing a complaint with the NHTSA. They will investigate. I filed a complaint about RV electric steps that had defects that caused the steps to collapse. Their investigation resulted in a recall. It was just a simple form that takes a few minutes to fill out.

I loved my '07 GMC Duramax with the Allison 6 speed trans. Put 400,000 miles on it before I passed it on to my nephew. It's still running for him and the only trans problem it has ever had is blowing cooler hoses. I feel your pain with the arm. I broke my left forearm in when I was about 12 in the 60's. Back then they only used plaster casts and in the six weeks I had to wear it I went through at least six different casts before the Doc gave up. I hope your arm is healing up but it will take a while to get the strength back. Keep up the good work and maybe leave the Derbys to the younger ones.

I'm glad you were able to find a "fix" for your tranny! My son bought a chevy duramax and had trans. problems pretty much from the start. Left him on the side of the road a couple times. Dealer said it was sensor problems and it would eventually lock up. AFTER limp mode, clear codes, start off again and then limp mode again, etc. until it wouldn't move at all. He had it about three years and sold it back to the dealer. It had been in the shop a few months total and on the third tranny. GM took care of it but never really fixed the problem.

That's the issue my 2016 Chevy Silverado had. Tried to start one day and battery was dead, put on charger and after a couple hours it started up. Decided to take to dealership and just as I get on interstate the infocenter went blank. Then ten minutes later the radio stopped working and shortly after all the gauges stopped working. Dealer called me two hours after dropping off and said the battery was kaput and the ground strap from engine to frame was showing to much resistance, replaced both. Working fine since. A freaking ground strap!

@philbert006 Ай бұрын
They all realize the problems. It's all a result of introducing software to the system. Mechanical issues can be pinpointed and corrected. Sometimes materials are not as consistent as we think, that's just the way of the physical world. Introducing electronics is allowing the systems to become vulnerable to interference from all the other electrical systems all over the world and it's the crux of that problem. That and inconsistent material properties. But none of that is the real issue. The real issue is money and how can they make more. Introducing things that are too complex or time consuming, as well as parts that can't be easily made, forces you to spend your money there, guaranteeing the influx of money that is necessary to feed the demon called greed. Greed. There's your culprit, and greed, the love of money, is the root of all evil. That's not a religious thing. Some try to say so, anyone that does is only attempting to get you to stop looking at them and highlighting their own greed. That is a fact of existence. Love of money is the root of all evil. It doesn't take a genius or some deep philosophical understanding to examine everything you see and hear and it to all boil down to that fact. You do not have to study deep religious canon. Every single one of them as well as any secular philosophy, all boil down to that one statement. You want what you do not have. How far will you go to get it? There's your meaning of life. Very few people are content to just have only what they need, and are compelled to attempt to gather everything they will need for their entire life, then bend others to that same purpose. Reducing their physical effort. The amount of work people have always put in to avoid the rather simple but constant effort required to survive is just plain stupid. And is another fact that cannot be avoided. Life requires a constant effort to provide it the fuel to keep running. That's universal and the reason things break down into their base components, entropy. Humans are focused on trying to slow that unavoidable fact, the reason for all efforts outside of just getting what you need to support life right now. Trying to stop that constant flow of energy and pool what we need for the rest of our life, or possibly gathering a surplus in hopes we can stop that constant flow out of us and thereby extending your life. Again, it's a function of that base emotion, greed. Trying to stop the march of time and flow of energy so you can have more time and energy for yourself. Congratulations, you have unlocked the secret to life. It's really no secret though. Anyone can figure out those two simple facts. The flow of energy is expressed as time. Nature wants to gather and pool that energy in hopes of preservation. It will use the energy it can gather for this purpose. But it is no a river to be dammed. Even damming the river will not stop it, eventually the pooling of that energy will overcome the obstacle or simply go around it. Just take your drink and keep on.

He implied that I was "too broke to own a decent" truck and needed to get a job. Thing is, I retired five years ago at age 50. I was able to do that partly because I have never worn my money or pissed it away by carrying debt. So I just smiled and said "it sure is a handsome truck. Glad to see you are doing well". Found out his engine blew last week... and so he is paying more per month for a truck that doesn't run than I pay out for my entire household budget. Mine is a lot older truck, 04 Duramax, but it did the exact same thing for a few years. I finally opened up the wire loom on the harness where it jumps from the frame up to the trans and figured out there were several wires that had worn insulation from gravel dust accumulation. They'd arc and send weird signals to the TCM, especially if it had rained or snowed outside. I dragged the entire harness out the wheel well onto a table, traced every wire one after the other, repaired any damage and stuffed everything back inside a piece of 1"clear vinyl hose and wrapped it like the dickens with really good 3m electrical tape. 80k since then and not one single trans issue.

You'd also be amazed at the number of wires that had a random knot tied into them or one wire would be half hitched around another here and there. No less than a dozen of those occurrences.

I drove multiple Chevy trucks at work over a period of 32 years and hated every single one of them. Try a Toyota next time. They seem to stand behind their products. Maybe a Dodge or a Ford. On the other hand, my other half bought a brand new Chevy Cobalt in 2008 and it is still dependable, tho she has had to take it back to the dealer multiple times.

My last GM vehicle (Chevy Volt) had a similar setup regarding the dipstick free transmission design. Following their instructions for checking the fluid level after trans service (via a level check hole) while running the engine didn't work; it would just spew trans fluid out everywhere once the pump started running. I resorted to just measuring the fluid that came out after draining and adding back the same amount in new fluid. That car was super reliable, but that trans design was the craziest thing I've seen. Without a reliable way to measure the fluid, there has to be a lot of underfilled or over-filled GM transmissions on the road.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul Ай бұрын
This method of checking trans fluid level is common across the industry now. Toyota/Aisin was one of the early adopters. They removed the dipstick and sealed the trans, leaving just the drain hole. They also pushed the "sealed for life" trans fluid, suggesting the fluid was good for the life of the vehicle.

I think the last year of the Allison transmission was 2017 and the newer trucks use a GM transmission based on the Allison. Supposedly 800,000 or so trucks were sold with faulty transmissions and there is a class action lawsuit against GM but we shall see. Can't believe that they haven't recalled these trucks but then again no one is holding them accountable for flawed designs.
