my father is 81yrs old and watches all your videos. He was a workaholic and worked in a large factory . started delivering bread with his father that passed on when my father was a teenager. With no education and 5 sisters & his mom. He worked his way up in that factory to production foreman, he took care of his family . He was leader and a freind to all he worked with. I watched your show and I see why he loves your show . you guys are birds of a feather together alike. Great show . Big thanks to you and yours for giving him something so great to watch 🙏 😊👍 PS his name is Terry landry , New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦 A shout out to him would greatly be appreciated 🙏

I gotta just thank - and maybe prompt a new nickname, Shakey Jake The Crustacean - a lad after my own heart = when it runs well enough, a little crust never hurts much of anything (except for paint). I Really enjoy Jake's eager helpfulness and enthusiasm, not to mention he has learned well to speak to the recording. I would rank him "Five Stars" !! As to 62-63 Corvairs, my mother had one when I was about 15 and I grew real fond of them. THAT is what caught my eye about Matt's Off Road in particular his Morvair, his generally raw + clever improvisational shop work, excellent recovery experience, his undying spirit and his Solid ethics, Family and Community Merits. I really admire seeing his kids growing up with such a Great Dad. Ten Stars !!

@@papaupstashe Not to be persnickety but no, he doesn't or, at least, isn't using it correctly in this case. Homologation means to get approval or an agreement. I think the word he probably meant to use would be amalgamation which is a combination of two or more things. Other than that, he is quite a character and adds to the channel. You can tell that he's grateful to Matt for the gift of such a classic "crusty" car.

Driving without the clutch brings back memories. I had taken my 81 Chevette to England with me during my AF days, and broke the clutch cable in the middle of London one day. Had to drive all the way back to the Oxford area without the clutch, which ment starting it in first if I had to come to a complete stop. (I didn't have a crew to push me for the rolling start) I Made it, but it was quite the adventure.

I had a 63 monza, motor came in 3 boxes. $250.00, trailered it home in 1976. GPA, DAD, and I pounded out the rear 1/4's, removed 9lbs of bondo. Rebuilt trans axel, I bought Gpa's newly rebuilt 110, dual exhaust, cherry bombs, A 70/13's. Rattlecan paint. Took us 4 months. Sold it in 1987 for $2700. One of my best memories of Gpa, Dad n me. My best friends dad had a Vair , and when he went from a scooter to a car . He bought a 62 . Between then in H.S. , until he got drafted in 67 . He had 3 different models . When he came home from Nam in 69 he drove that Vair waiting for him. He later bought a couple of Spiders , and all this time his dad still had the same CorVAIR . His dad would work on his and Dave's . They are both gone now , and watching this brings back many memories of riding the country roads in Hamilton Co. Indiana before he left for the Army .. Roll on guys ...

That Moment was sorrowful to think of all the young men in America that will got to bed tonight not even knowing their father will never have a father that will teach them to man up look a man in the eye and shake his hand. We can fix this America it’s only been a generation since men left home… it’s time to go home meet your children but it takes 2.

They should also be taught, you cant look someone in the eye, with sunglasses on. Shaking someones hand with gloves on, removes a part of the personal interaction aspect, which is the entire point in shaking their hand.. Kids... Take off your gloves, take off your sunglasses, shake his hand, and look him in the eye. I ride with a motorcycle club, and not removing gloves and glasses are seen as a major sign of disrespect, that has gotten a lot of people punched in the face! A lot of people believe thats uncalled for and unacceptable. I believe that if you learn manors and respect, you have nothing to worry about. If you dont, I will teach you, right in the face.

Rhett is super skilled now at his job. That Toyota pull with the Jet Ski's shows how well he knowns how to help just enough without letting the towline get too slack. And I mean, in the sand with those loads, it is really an ART, and he is an artist now, like his Dad. And regarding the professional handshake at the end of a job. Kudo's to Matt for teaching this dwindling but necessary tradition. Regardless of what you say Rhett, what you are really saying is "I am a man and my word is my bond. I see you and expect the same, and give you the same respect (women also of course but it is especially a Man thing to Shake a hand and show mutual respect.) I SEE you. You have SEEN me. Respect. It is a behavioral contract that demands honesty and good intentions. These things were a life and death covenant in the old world, and they are still important in the modern world. A hand shake means something, and I would not shake a mans hand unless I had at least minimal respect for them. Sometimes I cheat in the modern times and do a fist bump. It means the same thing, but is not as tactile as a firm handshake. Don't be a soft pudding, but don't try to get into a squeezing contest either. Just show some fortitude and humility What you say is less important than the respect you show. These are things passed down from my father and my fathers fathers as being important in greeting and de-greeting other men. And in business, with women or men, it means integrity. Databyter

I hope someday I can make it out your way Matt. I’ve been watching your channel since 2019 right after I bought my 2019 Ram Rebel. I was looking up videos to see how well the Rebel handled off-road adventures and came across this channel. You’re about 9 hours away (I’m in Idaho), so driving might not be an option due to chronic pain, but if I can save enough, I could fly. As a father, it’s been an honor to watch your boys grow up. As a man, it’s been an honor to watch how well you take care of all your employees, customers, community, and Ed (he reminds me of my father).

I had a beautiful red ‘64 Corvair that was spotless. I drove it in high school and Jr. College (1965-1968). I joined the Navy in ‘69 and had to go from San Diego to Memphis for “A” school. I didn’t think the Corvair would make it through the summer heat so I traded it in for a Chevy Impala. I’m 76 now and still wish I had it back. I occasionally look on line for Corvairs for sale but never pulled the trigger. I loved that little car. I’m about 75 lbs heavier and don’t know if I’d still fit in one!

A bit of Corvair work was fine for many of us but, you have really kicked it up and way beyond my interest in that vehicle. Now, if you want to start working on the best sports car company's flat six engines, then I am with you. However, I do not see any Boxsters, 911s, or 914-6s laying around. Thank you for your great videos of recovery and the builder of the recovery vehicles.

Back in the 60's, when I was a wee small boy, my uncle used to buy and sell cars to make some extra money. He really liked Corvairs. He had at least a dozen different ones but of course, he sold them all. I believe he only bought 4-speed models. I remember him taking me and my mom (his sister) for a ride in one of those Corvairs. He was driving along like, I don't know, maybe 30MPH in third gear he says to my mom "watch this". He pulls it into second gear and mashes the throttle and we were just pinned to the seat! That is a memory and feeling I will never forget. I never owned one myself though. It was a pretty neat design. Six cylinder, horizontally opposed, air cooled, rear drive. Completely opposite of everything coming out of Detroit at the time. I don't know to this day though, what made it unsafe at any speed.

If you all have corvairs you should do a big scavenger hunt/rally with them. Everyone takes their own corvairs, with passengers of their choice to build a team. Brainstorm a bunch of ideas separately, then hand it all into whoever is going to set it all up. Pick the best ideas and checkpoints then randomize the order and hand out lists that way everyone's looking for different things at different times!

I love this idea. Include some old school navigation (no GPS), some scenic areas (best Crovair picture?), some touring (TSD) rally elements. So many possibilities! Maybe they could invite some other Corvair clubs/owners to participate (depending on how big they want the thing to be).

I have to say that there are a lot of unsafe cars on the road today. Yes they have a ton of safety upgrades compared to the 1960's Corvairs but the cars nowadays flip over and roll over, I think, a lot quicker than the Corvairs did in there day. At least the center of gravity of the Corvair is lower than most of the SUVs out and about today. This is a great build and you'll have a lot of fun with it when it's done. But no car project is really ever done! ! ! 😀😀

It may have been overstated time in and time out… but my grandfather used to tell me stories of dropping flathead V8 engines in these things and racing them from Pueblo Colorado to Florence Colorado doing insane things to get there. The stretch isn’t really far but the altitude change and road curves and conditions were fun….and the local police presence was just another challenge for the course. Regardless of his old school bench-racing about times long past… he was a old school rodder that wasn’t afraid to use the duct tape and knew that the difference between Chevrolet and Ford and Chrysler (or any other brand) was just a bench grinder and eyeball measurement away from heavy footed horsepower. I miss him and wish I had been able to pick his brain for more wisdom before he passed many years ago. You have some of the most lucky employees and kids… they have no idea what gift they are being given every time you share your knowledge. Won’t be long before there is nobody to pass on that Corvair knowledge and that will be a shame… as the cars get rusty and fade away so do the people with the passion and knowledge of the cars… May your appreciation and knowledge live on through your children and friends….continue passing that torch.

That's pretty cool that the Corvair is simple to run and operate. It's my favorite way for a vehicle to run, simple. It's great to see Jake lit up with excitement as his Corvair is brought back to running condition, running but not stopping as he happily declared. Awesome work you all. Rhett, remember your mission on the recovery, to "get them out". That can be your safe way to close out the recovery; a firm hand shake, as you look the customer in the eye tell them, "Glad that we could get you out". They may not be able to drive their vehicle for a while, yet you still "Got them out".

It's funny that people claim to like simple, then go out and buy lane assist, dynamic cruise control, 18 airbags, heated and cooled seats, 20" infotainment, etc... up until recently you could buy a Nissan Micra with manual everything for under $10gs. Nobody bought one.

@@bgee461 I have an '83 Dodge D100, completely manual. No A/C, no power steering, no power brakes, AM/FM radio, manual roll up windows. The newest part was converting the Distributor to have magnetic pick up. The original Distributor rusted solid together over the weekend that I didn't drive it. It became a lock out Distributor. The magnetic pick up gives a vastly improved spark to the ignition system. So, yes I do prefer old school simple.

My dad had a 60 corvair that an uncle talked him out of for his daughter to drive. She ended up driving it for an hour with the oil light on and killed it. When I got out of the Army in 75 and needed a car, we repossessed it, i found a guy locally that had a 63 he wanted rid of and all I had to do was give him the instrument cluster and headlights. Towed it to the uncle's body shop and swapped the motor. Gave the salvaged body to the uncle and had a sweet ride, with the optional gas heater! Very useful in Utah winters. I regret to this day ever getting rid of that gem!

Jake asked what I would do if my friends and I all had cool Corvairs like yours… Well, I’d pick a Saturday this Fall and plan to drive down from Hurricane, through St. George to Ivens and up past Gunlock reservoir to Veyo. Then I’d head up through Pine Valley past Mountain Meadows Historic Site on 18 through Enterprise, then over to Cedar on 36. Depending upon how much time we’d already spent stopping at all the cool spots along the way, I might just head down the 15 and back to Hurricane through Toquerville. But if we had time, it would be worth it to run up through Cedar Canyon past Navajo Lake on 14 and down into Kanab/Fredonia on 89 and back to Hurricane past the Pipe Spring National Monument through Hildale/Colorado City on 389. Of course, you could save that second part for another great cruise on another weekend. Also might make excellent content with all those cool places to stop along the way…just thinking’ - lol. I am more of a VW guy, but there is a place in my heart for the other air cooled rear mounted engine vehicles.... I even think the two engines sound a bit alike.

Former fire extinguisher technician here - I recommend you guys get one CO2 extinguisher for spot-extinguishing the little flareups you guys get on a regular basis. Those 15-20 pound yellow-powder ABC extinguishers on the walls are in good spots for big emergencies, like they should be. But those start leaking air the moment you break the seal, so you can't use them trivially. A CO2 extinguisher can be used whenever you need it until you run it dry, and doesn't leave residue.

My dad drove a 61 or 62 corvair with a two speed automatic. It putt putted around our hometown for years. Great learn to drive car as it would not go over about 35 MPH, not sure why, but he felt safe for me to learn driving skills in it. This video brought back many sentimental memories 👍🔧🇺🇸

I remember living in Troy, a suburb of Detroit in September of 1964 waiting at the bus stop as a kid, watching for the new 1965 models to drive past, most driven by big 3 execs. We saw among others a 1965 Corvair with the distinctive concave rear end.. exciting times in the auto industry.. exciting time to be a kid too..🎉

Matt you are a good man . Very gracious. Jake thank you for taking some time and giving Dawn and I a yard tour early this year. 21:56 Covair sounds nice. Moves under its own power time to get a burger. God bless one and all.

Back when these vehicles were fairly new people knew Corvairs were unsafe at any time. I always hated the rear axles moving to center. We always had to repair the spark plugs threads also. I am glad you guys are keeping them around. They are to good of looking vehicles, please paint them nice and shiny.

You’all should have a massive Covair cruise in: swap meet, barbecue, Nader debunking, 1/8th mile drags, the works.

That year 'Vair is cool because it has an upside down cross on the lower front fenders. 😁 My '62 Dodges had an upside down crosses on the hood.

Many, many years ago I had a 1962 Corvair Van. I got it running on 5 cylinders and then sold it to the guy that owned the local dump. That was more than 50 years ago. If I had another Corvair I would drive the heck out of it, just like I now do with my two old Buicks.

Hello Jake. This 62 must have been like a racer in the sixthies with 102 horses from the factory. My first car was a 64 VW Beatle with 34 horses, not a racer but much better than to walk in bad weather. The next one was a 69 Volvo Amazon B20 with 95 horses, that one I felt was really fast. With the lighter car weights in the sixthies they didn't need that much power, and these old cars deserves to be driven with respect. Really master class😊. Best Regards from Arne in Norway

Can always watch a Corvair video. My first two cars were a 61 and 64 Corvairs the 64 I bought for $400 in 68. Had a a seat that slipped out of head. Rebuilt at auto shop in Fort Hood TX. Had to part with it to go to college. After a 42 year layoff bought a replacement 64 with 41000 miles.

My parents bought brand new, a 1963 Monza Spyder, when they were 27 years old. First road trip was to a place called “Dirty Sox” from our home in Anaheim. It was so cool, that twisty turny road with big dips, was so much fun, I was 7 years old. Alas, I guess insurance got expensive, so in 1966 they got $875 for it as a trade-in, for a 66 SS Chevelle 396, which is in my garage now.

If I'd just gotten my vintage Corvair running after a long time, I wouldn't need to go "get" anything, I'd just go and enjoy driving it! I got a 62 Monza in college in Youngstown Winter, late December 67 and kept it until Summer. It was my college "beater". It was a rust belt Corvair but it was a good car. Had the base engine with the Power Glide. Often wish I could find another one! Good cars for sure.
