An axolotl IS A SALAMANDER. It’s just specially adapted to not continue the full process of the metamorphosis. Why is this, well it’s because the gland which releases the hormone for metamorphosis doesn’t release the hormone in them, if the iodine levels get to low the axolotl is then forced into a condition where to survive it releases the hormone but due to the lack of iodine the created is then in a condition it wasn’t supposed to be in and it often dies. It’s a rare even naturally but in captivity can be causes due to poor maintenance.

@@Pokelemon3434 Axolotls aren’t meant to morph, unlike other salamanders in their genus. Their ability to morph is purely vestigial and isn’t normal. Well, it was always in their dna, they are like any other salamander but they just never actually had a reason to live on land. Their wild living conditions never made them adapt so they just don't, they are one of the only salamander types that stay in their juvenile form for their whole life. Also turning into a land creature shortens their life span tremendously, after the change they only live for another year or two compared to 5+ depending on how old the axolotl is.

Makes sense. Axolotls are a unique in the regard that they do not 'grow up' by default. For other salamanders being a water animal is a childhood phase, axolotls decided getting out of water was unnecessary and the growing up mechanism was suppressed in this regard. So it makes sense that as a mutation or something this mechanism can just randomly re-appear.

@@Smoneey no. Literally everyone is saying this is bad for them. It’s not about appearances, it’s about the animal’s health. They typically only morph in extreme conditions in order to survive, and tend to die shortly after. It dramatically decreases their life expectancy. Your metaphor makes no sense- it’s not like making a toddler stay a toddler, it’s like keeping an adult healthy so that they don’t die earlier. If they morph on their own, okay, but you shouldn’t be putting them in conditions in order to try and force it on them. That will make things worse.

@@elijahthompson1120 For an analogy think of frogs. Their life cycle is egg, tadpole, then frog. They go from having gills and being stuck in the water to having lungs and being able to leave the water for brief periods of time. Axolotls are the same. They are born from eggs, have gills (which are the feathery parts on their face), and then they lose those gills and go on land. However axolotls have evolved to not reach their final form. It’s like if a frog stayed a tadpole forever but still was able to reproduce. That’s what axolotls have evolved to do.

No that’s not true at all, I don’t know who you Heard that from but axolotl‘s can’t be with tiger salamanders. And the only way for an axolotl to turn into a salamander is bad environment on accident or when the owners force that axolotl into a metamorphosis it’s not healthy for it shortens their lifespan and is very abusive to the animal. If you think it’s good to do that to ask Lotto then you don’t deserve to own axolotl. Tiger salamanders are related but they can’t breed with axolotl‘s metamorphosis for axolotl is unnatural. If you don’t believe me ask professional axolotl breeders.

Axolotls are a unique species of amphibians that exhibit neoteny, which means they retain their juvenile characteristics, including gills and aquatic lifestyle, throughout their lives. Under normal circumstances, axolotls do not naturally undergo metamorphosis to become terrestrial salamanders. However, there are a few methods that can induce metamorphosis in axolotls if desired, but it's important to note that these methods can be stressful and potentially harmful to the axolotl. Therefore, they should only be attempted by experienced individuals or researchers under controlled conditions. 1. Hormonal Induction: Injecting axolotls with specific hormones, such as thyroid hormones or thyroxine, can trigger metamorphosis. This method mimics the natural hormonal changes that occur during metamorphosis in other amphibians. However, it's crucial to note that hormonal induction can be stressful and may have adverse effects on the axolotl's health. 2. Environmental Changes: Altering the environmental conditions can also induce metamorphosis in axolotls. This includes raising the water temperature, reducing water depth, providing a substrate for the axolotl to climb onto, and exposing them to terrestrial conditions. These changes mimic the conditions that trigger metamorphosis in other amphibian species. It's important to closely monitor the axolotl's health and provide appropriate care during this transition period. It's worth mentioning that inducing metamorphosis in axolotls is not a common practice and is typically done for scientific research purposes. Axolotls are highly valued for their unique characteristics, including their regenerative abilities, and they are often kept in their neotenic form as pets or for conservation efforts. If you have an axolotl as a pet and are considering inducing metamorphosis, it's crucial to thoroughly research the process and consult with experts or experienced individuals in the field to ensure the well-being of the axolotl. It very sad how this happens. So doing as much as you can helping them is great ❤

There seems to be some confusion in the comments, so lemme try to help! A true axolotl is neotenic and will not become terrestrial for any other reason than poor living conditions. Axies crossbred with tiger salamanders can become terrestrial due to suppression of the gene, but as far as I know this is also uncommon. I don't know what percentage of axies sold are results of this crossbreeding, but because metamorphisis is still uncommon in the axie keeping community, I would say not many lol Metamorphosis is super stressful and will shorten the axolotls life span, so do not ever try to elicit that response‼️

Hi, I study and rescue morphed axolotls (salamanderwithasign) and I just want to say that this is actually not what happens in MOST all cases! I've been interviewing owners and, as I said before, researching what causes this and the biggest answer is genetics. I've actually never met anyone in my studies (outside of verified labwork) that has caused their axolotl to morph VIA "cruelty." In the pet trade, it happens because of a faulty genetic line. We are currently thinking that it might have something to do with hybridization with other types of salamander (tiger salamander and andersoni are big ones) thus creating a recessive gene that causes axolotls to morph as they near "adulthood."

@@ChrM1694 literally every amphibian can undergo triggered change and become "another amphibian", except for axolotl, at least naturally You see, frogs, toads, and salamanders that Though they don't become separate species Once a frog, always a frog They just underwent a series of metamorphosis before being mature Eggs, tadpoles, tadpoles with legs, young frogs, and matured frogs are all frogs, and will always be frog no matter the form Axolotls are unique because they are the only kind of salamander that does paedomorphosis They live in a poor environment where food and water are scarce Sometimes even Iodine which is necessary to produce thyroxine, which is needed to reach maturity is also scarce So they do paedomorphosis, allowing them to breed before reaching mature state, unlike other salamanders that need to be full-grown to breed And yes, axolotls are closely related to salamanders, because axolotl is a part of the salamander group Axolotl is just one of many species of salamanders

I feel like this is misleading… after seeing this I did some research cause I thought it was genuinely interesting but unfortunately it’s not as simple as “this person didn’t take care of it so it changed to survive” if you don’t take care of it and leave it in poor conditions it will most likely die. The only reason I could think of this metamorphosing spontaneously, is because of interbreeding of axolotl/salamander species. Which is not necessarily healthy since it shortens their lifespan if they successfully require the genes to morph into a salamander. From various videos it says most of the time after they transform they only have about a year. Other videos I have seen show that some can live longer but those have all been mainly tiger salamander/axolotl hybrids

Forcibly morphing an axolotl is cruel and incredibly painful for them, and in most cases the poor thing just dies. They have lungs, but they cannot use them. Axolotls are fully aquatic. Hi, I study and rescue morphed axolotls (salamanderwithasign) and I just want to say that cruelty is actually not what happens in MOST all cases to make an axolotl morph!

They are, by definition, neotenic. They shouldn't ever morph in perfect conditions. It is thought by veterinarians to be caused by excessive iodine levels in water. I appreciate the sentiment but "interviewing" axolotl owners isn't a super reliable source. Of course nobody wants to admit they neglected their pets so badly they morphed, and the opportunity for dishonesty is astonishingly high. For now, peer reviewed scientific studies conclude the most likely answer is iodine levels. Please don't discredit the science that exists. It is dangerous to let people believe it is okay for their pets to morph. Additionally; we know for a fact it is not a gene mutation because certain hormones have to be present in order for a change to occur, all axolotls can produce this hormone, but it does typically come from thyroxine. Stress always plays a factor.

For anybody wondering, this is known as axolotl metamorphosis. It occurs when the axolotl produces a hormone called thyroxine, which it does not usually naturally produced. It is only produced in the presence of iodine, meaning of an axolotl is kept in water with high iodine concentrations, it will metamorphize.
