About 90% of Vietnamese is non-religious but that 90% also goes to pagodas and prays to the Buddha. Even though they don't consider themselves Buddhist, you can pretty much say that Buddhism still has much power in Vietnam more than any religion. (And Catholism is still under 'special observation')

You are correct. Hai Phong, known as the gangsta city is larger in size, both geographically and population, than Da Nang. They are very different culturally.

As with many things in life, it depends on the metric used. There are official census numbers, estimates, metropolitan areas, urban areas, and city jurisdictional areas, all of which are slightly different and yield different results. Looking at how Vietnam officially calculates population, (based not on the number of people living there but on how many people call it their hometown), Hai Phong is 3rd, Can Tho is 4th, and Da Nang is 5th. If you count immigrant workers, it's harder to get an accurate count, (possibly one reason why Vietnam doesn't use this method), the ranking changes. While Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism have been practiced in Vietnam for centuries, other religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism have also made inroads in recent times. Should have insurance that covers you in Vietnam and pays the hospital IMMEDIATELY!! No insurance or cash to pay for operation-no treatment. Most people travelling to here never think about this, but if you get dengue, typhoid, or in an accident (some of the most dangerous roads in the world here) the hospitals will do no more than receive you until a down-payment/payment has been made. They just push your bed into the hall and wait for money or.....Also, you must have a Vietnamese driver license and motorbike insurance if you want to drive a motorbike. Have a motobike accident and injure a Vietnamese with no Vietnamese license and no moto insurance- ever watch 'Locked-up-Abroad'? Chain your money to yourself, trust no one, carry a small bottle of alcohol for bites, beware of people wanting to help you. Be ready to be scammed, lied to, extorted, and robbed at any time. Do not be naive reading about Vietnam being heaven-on-Earth! Dirty, dusty, trashy, noisy and still 3rd world. Living here 22 years now. FYI.

the floating market got eliminated when bridges got built to connect the cities together and removed the needs for taking ferries or shipping goods grown/made in the mekong delta to the cities. in fact, the Cai Rang market is a lot smaller than it's used to be a few years ago.

@@Maxwin999 I know, but most Buddhists are very selfish, they keep the religion to themselves and also don't admit they are Buddhists (but the number of Buddhism temples can't lie) and they don't correct what's written wrongly or intentionally in the internet. They also lowered the number of Buddhists figure in China, such are tactics used by Christians who controlled the internet and politics. Vietnam suffered from the French and the Americans and splited into north and south was due to Christianity too. Their last Emperor Bao Dai who collaborated with the French was a Catholics and the PM he appointed, Ngo Dinh Diem too. This PM with his brother betrayed Vietnam and persecuted Buddhists and worked for US but karma is fair, he was believed to be murdered by U.S. when he was no longer useful to the U.S. Today Vietnam have much more Christians in the South compared to the North was due to these 2 bastards who betrayed their ancestors. People today should know all these history, China even suffered more due to Christianity in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom incident, so was Japan, that's why they are wiser to ban Christianity during part Meiji period.

They are likely restricted on what they can tell tourists. There is a lot of government restriction on organized religion - it's a communist country. Just saying. No, Buddhism don't see money as important as Christianity, see how they use psychological trick to collect more money or suggesting a percentage of income, they know when others are watching, people will pay more or shy for not paying. All Asian religions don't collect money in such a manner.

It's actually not too bad! I did both on seperate trip but I had to arrange my own accomodation, early morning boat to Cai Rang. It was worth visiting! I think being on a tour is even better since you have the guide to help communicate to fellow sellers etc. 😄

most of non-religious or religious Viet actually also practice some type of ancestor worship with a small-ish altar in their home, sometimes w a sprinkle of Buddhism or Catholicism.

@@bachha627 Ah ok. I have noticed small temples in videos of Southeast Asia and assumed with a comment like in this video that they were still a minority. However, a search just now says 30% are non religious. Maybe not as encouraging as "mostly" non religious. Hehe.
