Jordan, do not be disheartened. My son Josh owned a coffee shop in an eclectic part of Denver for 5 years. He first started it as an artistic experiment. He was in an industrial complex with no foot traffic other than the tenants of a business complex with about 20 small businesses. So his audience was small and if he did not land repeat customers he was dead. He did not even have any cream or sugar on the premises and had cups made that at the bottom of the cup said "death to cream:" and had an image of a cow upside down. He was successful more than I could even imagine. People bought into his idea that he shopped the world for the best coffees, so you should not have to dress it up to enjoy the pure taste. He placed high in local competitions. But most of all he saw people gratified by something very special in his coffees. Offered once a month cuppings. He, like you, excelled in his craft. He even flew to Honduras and met with 52 coffee farmers to see if he could help them harvest differently and net more money for their coffees instead of doing a coop, like they had done for decades. After 5 years he sold his " artistic experiment and pursued a career in piloting aircraft. But for you, you did everything right and because you were not Panamanian, you really did not have a chance of winning. Even with all the negative scores you received, you still got 3rd place. That is really a 1st place, but they could not give it to you for strictly political reasons. That's my take-away and I hope it is yours as well. The real super win is your friend who beat cancer through a miracle from God as my wife Diane has done. God bless your family, we love you guys.

I think it's the idea that the judges could not give first place to a non-native Panamanian, in order to navigate the politics of their country, and of the country's coffee grower and maker community. They had to find something wrong...and yet, Jordan finished 3rd of 22. An acknowledgement, I think, that Jordan got as close to #1 as possible for a non-native Panamanian. It makes me think, Jordan, that they truly did see you, deeply, and did all they could do within the confines and complexities of human and political circumstances.

I want to piggy back on what maybeme94 said. ‘Your professionalism and presentation was so beyond the judges’ ability to appreciate…” at first that might simple sound like flattery from a devoted follower but it might hold a key to understanding the judges. Growing up in America, it is bred into us that being our best will lead to success and recognition and is reinforced by hearing testimonies of rags to riches stories. Justice, truth and competition regardless of ethnicity, religion, country of origin are pillars in America that for the most part play out but are not always the priorities in the fabric of other countries. Sometimes fairness and opportunity is demonstrated by prioritizing and preserving the indigenous native born population over outsiders. Or a country is a crony society where their elite always land the best positions and fairness holds little value. At any rate, gaining approval from any authority, one must cater to their idiosyncrasies and know their biases. Especially in today’s world, there are agendas, biases and alliances that hold more sway than the quality performances of any participant. Taking a deep dive and identifying patterns of past winners could provide some insight and strategies for the future. Taking third place tells me that you are a somebody to the coffee community and they had to give you some recognition. IMO and I could be totally wrong about this, what factored most is what you have done for the indigenous coffee farmers in Panama. You have earned their respect.

Dear Jordan, what I admire MOST about you is who you are, the passion you put into everything you do, and how you give 100% to everything you care about. The thing about competitions is that it reduces the feelings of worth and the measure of worth to the subjective criteria of narrowly framed parameters and the biases/subjective viewpoints of the judges. Win the competition and the winner feels everything they've done is validated and recognized. Lose the competition and all the hard and beautiful work at very human levels, can be reduced to "failure", unfairness, self-doubt, discouragement, disappointment. Yet, in reality, all the beauty and awesomeness of the life's work and efforts are just as real and valuable as they ever were! The limitations of the competition are a subjective moment in time. A flawed measure of a tiny aspect of what you do. Your gifts, accomplishments and value are SO much more than that! My thoughts (with admiration and recognition of your intentions) is to stop doing this competition- for so many reasons. Focus on the life you want to live, the joy you bring to others, the love you have to give, the quality of your coffee, the fairness you show to the coffee farmers, the respect and gratitude you show the land and its people. The beautiful news for Jose serves to remind all of us to try to stop for a moment and think about what is truly important and meaningful in our lives, then turn our faces to the sun and move forward! ❤️❤️❤️

You won Third Place and you also won with José, because without you, we wouldn’t have known from his illness, and with our help he had his surgery. So that’s wonderful! I am so happy about Jose David. That is amazing. My grandpa was a miracle too. God blessed me with 28 more years with him after he was given 6 months to live. His cancer went away it was a miracle. Jordan, you were AMAZING! Don't get down on yourself you rocked it! You have the greatest friends and Kaylee and Sadie are amazing too of course! Hold your head up high!!!

Tears welled up hearing Jose David’s message. I have been dealing with disabling pain from Ehlers Danlos syndrome for almost 25 years now and a verrry promising treatment just showed up for me that I am starting next week - hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It’s supposed to give my body that boost in tissue healing that folks with my condition need. I have had my hopes let down many times by different therapies but I’m still letting myself have a lot of hope that this time this will work ❤. It’s super expensive but the money for it just showed up. I feel a lot of faith and I am so encouraged by hearing this story of miraculous healing. That’s what I am calling in too!!

Jordan, FYI you have surpassed the level of this competition and the decision of these judges. Why? Well, to begin with you “walk your talk” and graciously educate thousands of viewer about coffee and Panamanian coffee culture. You present, celebrate and support the indigenous communities, who believe in YOU. Personally, I don’t remember a time that I have been so curious about the taste, harvest or cultural background of Panamanian coffee. We who have followed you, Kaylee and little Sadie have enjoyed your videos. You have sparked an interest in me and I am so grateful. I happen to be Peruvian raised in the States and I remember drinking my first “café con leche” as a child ( a couple of spoonfuls). It is a big part of my culture as well. Your enthusiasm and love for “everything coffee” is contagious. I know you wanted to represent Panama and share your enthusiasm, dedication and love for coffee and well…. the judges MISSED OUT.
