I think that part of the problem might be that drivetrain power loss wasn't high enough, especially since you mentioned the gearbox not being great, and/or people not having enough balls to actually push the thing further in fear of becoming a red mist on impact

@@fillman86 Yeah... something to keep in mind. Tires from back then (as you found out) had absolutely terrible traction. Power to push the car further wasn't the issue... these things made plenty of power... it was being capable of putting that power down that was the real issue. A lot of these speed runs back then weren't done at full throttle... they were basically a balancing act of keeping the thing right on the verge of grip all the way up to as fast as the tires could push it. When at top speed, usually if you would give it any more throttle they would just break loose. The tires just didn't have the traction to push it any faster. On modern tires these things would probably have been capable of going MUCH faster (rather terrifyingly).

The latter is highly unlikely. The original driver of the car is John Cobb, an absolute speed freak. The man eventually commissioned a car to take the Land Speed Record, which he did, and he then decided to also take the Water Speed Record as well, which is the one that killed him...

I'm not sure how good it is for land-speed records, but there's a "track" with banked corners that goes around the Gridmap (the current one, v2); there's also an oval too you pass by at some point. It's not very clearly marked, but once you find it, you can mostly just keep going straight at the exit of each banked turn to stay on track.

I'd guess that the drag coefficient of that, with open wheels and open cockpit, is notably above 0.6, possibly even close to 1.0. But remember that drag coefficient is multiplied by the frontal area in calculating the force -- so probably what's happened is that somewhere in the Automation export, only a few tiny things are being included in the frontal area, and so BeamNG thinks the frontal area is 1/50th of what it should be.

Vanilla cars in BeamNG don't have realistic drag coefficient values, the game simulates aerodynamics in a very basic way so it's not possible to put a realistic drag coef and reach a realistic top speed. When you have multiple layered surfaces, each of them adds extra drag. Usually they use drag coef of 10 and then multiply it with a scaleDragCoef parameter differently for each car to get accurate top speed. I'd say for a car with no layered surfaces and no scale modifier, 50 is a reasonable drag coef in BeamNG. Meanwhile Automation uses some custom Lua scripts to calculate aerodynamics so the BeamNG drag coef is 0 in Automation cars. And the issues with it you mentioned I think only happen when you add pressure to the body like in your swimming car build.
@fillman86

Don't quote me 100% on that, but I think the weirdly high-pitched sound may come from the crank shape and firing order you used in the EngineSim engine - it appears to have a very pronounced "multiple of 3 cylinder" harmonic to it. Not too sure if there's data about crankpin angle separation or firing order on such old engines but that doesn't really sound right to me hmmm Gotta love the extent you go to in this sort of videos. Got your stuff into recommended a while back with the Piccolina engine swap video :P

they don't make more low end torque, they lack the innate ability to make high end power, so they focus their efforts elsewhere. If you tried with both pushrod, and any kind of overhead cam, you'd be able to make more low end torque with the later :/ The compactness is true, but only for the given volume, not necessarily for the given power (though I've not really though about the compactness vs low end torque... so maybe?
