It's dead easy with Babylon to unlock stuff from the far future, but you still have to pay those crushingly high future prices to actually get any of this stuff you unlock. There is a video out there of a play-through in which crossbowmen were unlocked on turn 23, but the player, not making any obvious avoidable mistakes, did not produce his first crossbowmen until turn 72, despite being at war -- actually because he was tied up in an early war and was forced to spam cheaper units to keep his head above water. He didn't have the luxury of waiting for higher priced crossbowmen to be produced. It takes a bit of skill to bring home in a timely manner all the marvelous things you can unlock early as Babylon, and I am eager to see how Potato brings off his particular plan. One thing he's got going for him here is that he hasn't been dragged into an early war.
@PhantomNull13
@PhantomNull13 2 жыл бұрын
@@2gtomkins As a Babylon main, I 100% agree. With a crossbow rush, you generally want to focus gold so you can upgrade archers instead of producing them from scratch, but even that can be a problem if you don't get currency and commercial hubs up soon enough due to the archers having an inherent cost. The advantage that potato has is that the build path he's going (mining->apprenticeship->industrialization->flight) will actually help alleviate the production issues slightly, as apprenticeship and industrialization both add production to mines, so he isn't quite as hampered by the low production. The builder spam also means he should be able to improve every possible mine, adding to overall production. As long as there's at least two cities with a few hills nearby, combined with coal/iron and industrial zones, he should be able to manage industrial era production relatively easily.

I just played Babylon today. I took the tall approach over your wide approach. I basically rushed industrial zone, then oracle, Pingala with the culture and double GPP promotion, 2nd city with industrial zone and workshop. In doing so, I got the first great engineer that give wonder production and got a super early Ruhr valley. I then went on a killing spree with bombard and musketman. Man it feels good when everything is going your way in a game.

A very fun build for Babylon is to rush Ruhr to unlock Flight and gigabusted mines. Build 3 mines and one more city to unlock industrial zone. Then build another workshop for industrialisation. Then build a factory and Ruhr. From there, you can either build anything in one turn or start building plane units
@markfarmer7534
@markfarmer7534 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, I think it's better not to settle on a hill tile, as having a city center on the tile removes your ability to build a mine on it. Sure, you get 1 extra production early, but you lose out on 2 production, once 3 mines are built, and even more later on.

Just played my first game as Babylon and it's such a breath of fresh air after hundreds of hours of play. Really gets me thinking and strategising differently. In my game I spawned right near a natural wonder, so I rushed a religion and chose religious settlements and all of the culture upgrades, which gave me some really good synergy with Magnus locust strats. It didn't even occur to me that I could rush late-game wonders this way though!

As a newbie deity player, I recently did this. Built some cities, got the three archers to get xbows. Used the xbows to defend against the three civs that dog piled me. Got early industrial zones, then the ruhr valley, killed a neighbour. Could have gone for domination but remembered this series, went straight for biosphere, wind and solar farms, and spammed mh way to a tourism victory somewhere in the 1300s. Was so much fun!

Locust mode a must though!

Always found it a little surprising how most of your games the barb camps weren't such a threat. I've spent like 100 turns before just trying to defend from and clear out barb camps.

"This is too many barbs." Yeah, it's like their spawns are bugged or something and never got fixed, even after the Barbarian Clans mode. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but they REALLY dropped the ball on barbs. Their player-prioritizing coding and bugged spawn rates makes playing with them incredibly annoying. Here's how it's supposed to work: For spawn rates, a barb camp is supposed to spawn a small raiding party, usually consisting of 3 units (two Melee/Cavalry and a Ranged) to attack the city they scouted. If they manage to loiter and pillage uncontested, they spawn siege units. HOWEVER: Barb camps will also naturally spawn new units the longer their camps are left alone. This is tied to them gaining confidence, allowing for more open maneuvers. After all, the lack of law enforcement promotes criminal behaviour. Meanwhile, attacking the Scout or Defender will increase the amount of time before they produce another unit, representing them being cowed by the fact that an active military force will take action against them. Barbarians are, at their heart, cowards. Preying on undefended and weak lands. But that coding is currently bugged. Instead, barb camps just accelerate when pressured. They have no Production queue like players do, often spawning units immediately. This can result in your Warrior sent to destroy the camp being surrounded by Barb warriors (or worse, Barb Horsemen/Horse Archers). This is also why Naval Barb camps are such a huge pain in the ass to deal with, 3 turns, 3 Quadriremes. Player prioritization is also problem, because it renders the Incite and Bribe mechanics totally worthless. Barbs will still NOT attack AI civs if they have sight on your empire, instead taking your money and raiding your lands. Bribing them keeps them out of your territory, but they'll still make every effort to pillage your Trade Routes and steal your civilian units. Finally, the kicker with player prioritization: Barbarians can and will mount raids on AI players, but the moment your territory is identified, they abandon their attacks (even if the AI frontier city was 1 turn away from being razed) and immediately make their way to your lands. This is MOST evident with the Recruit Partizans mission, which even happened in one of Potato's recent vids. An AI performed the mission against another AI and the barbs that spawned ran over to Potato's land and pillaged his stuff.
