Frida's voice is amazing on this. It's a fun song that was never meant to be on the album. It was added later. Originally a B-side. The theme is a metaphor and not literal.

It was actually meant to be on the Super Trouper album, but was replaced by the title track which was the last song written and recorded for the album. Also it was never a B-side, it remained unreleased until 1992

It's a beautiful Mexican flavoured melody and song, that was left outof the album last minute in favour of 'Super Trouper' .And it was a wise decision cause this one was good but mostly for us Abba fans while ST was a song for the masses!And Frida was both the queen lead to both of them.

Frida's vocal is superb. The lyrics are innocent and naive but they are delivered earnestly and with real feeling. It wasn't released at the time as B&B rejected it but I think it's great, taken for what it is and listened to without 21st century irony. Thanks for reviewing it.

Hi guys this was never meant to be released and was left off the Super Trouper Album..... it only got released 14 years after Abba had disbanded as a bonus track on a box set ( along with a few other unreleased songs).. Its got some lovely harmonies, but not their best by some distance.

Two songs I would highly recommend: "THE PIPER" is a medieval renaissance sounding song...definitely different, unique & beautiful. "DANCE (WHILE THE MUSIC STILL GOES ON)" is one of their older songs that captures their uncanny ability to mix an upbeat sound, with underlying melancholy. It also features Agnetha & Bjorn with lead vocals.

That was a 'Super Trouper' album 'leftover'.It got finally released 14 years after, in that precious 1994 special cd box with rarities.'Kisses of fire'(the Abba in Switserland show version)/'On and on and on' next ones.Oh and you gotta revisit THAT'S ME along with Marissa.

Not one of my favourite ABBA songs, but it's still more than listenable to, and Frida sings it very well .. As you're both aware by now, they weren't afraid to try lots of various styles and take a few risks along their way .. BTW :- I actually quite like "Tropical Loveland" .. It also has nostalgic memories for me, seeing as it was one of the songs ABBA performed in a TV special here in Australia when I was in my teens.

Funny reaction! I think the lyric is supposed to indicate that the Sombrero guy is living a fantasy life and the singer is telling him to get on his horse so to speak, and ride off out of town. There is something odd in the third verse: I remember reading it, I think it was a rare instance that Agnetha takes over the melody in a Frida song. You definitely need to do Cassandra now, it was a Sombrero reconstruction, after the group discarded Sombrero as not good enough.

I'm glad that 'Sombrero' was kept off the 'Super Trouper' album, but even though it's not an ABBAsolute favourite, it's still a very enjoyable listen with a great backing track, and fabulous Frida vocals. It's definitely not their weirdest song; I'd give that to 'Elaine' or 'I'm A Marionette.'

Covered by Belgian singer Dana Winner, the song features an imperious Frida showcasing her beautiful voice. Rather than making fun of the title you’d do better to listen to the lyrics which explains how she’s telling her fella to get lost as in “Put on your white sombrero and get lost”. Obviously its a synth intro but Dana Winners version features a Mexican troupe on trumpets. ABBA were a very versatile group and put out Spanish language versions of many of their songs so as someone else commented this track would have appealed to their wider audience.

There are some chords and musical ideas shared with "Cassandra", which I suspect was written around the same time. Play them back to back and you'll see why. The rhythem/time signature is similar for a start.

The only thing like a reason, I could think of, for the existence of this song is... that B&B set themselves into catering for that specific audience, say the ones who would already enjoy listening jotas and paso-dobles, and stretch it to encompass those other audiences that enjoy schlager and folk/world music of the time, together with good sections of pop and current sounds... An exercise similar in scope but rather different in execution to what they started and completed at the cases of Fernando, Chiquitita and I Have a Dream. Then, the rest of musicians and band joined in, while still there was some hope that the efforts would turn it into something surprising and good, as had happened many times before. Let's remember that at that time there were a few very popular songs (in the whole Europe) like "El Lute" by Boney M, songs that proved that such mixed-styles compositions could be widely come to be appreciated... However, as it is, the almost untreated keyboard solo parts and the lyrics present, resemble quite much other demos in similar timbres at the former case, and in cheesiness at the later, so its easy to conclude that although "Put On your While Sombrero" appears to be a finished song, it most likely isn't. Actually being a rather completer demo than the usual, that probably at the last time they decided wasn't accomplished or taking nowhere. They felt it could not be bettered later (not without large modifications), up to a point to leave it completely aside. ///In my view, this is one of the very few (if other case exist) demo/unreleased ABBA songs that I don't enjoy. Never did. And nope, it is not because of the strong connection with my Spanish heritage (I do like some of their other Spaniard forays), but because of the aspects already detailed above. Also Yes! Frida vocal performance is outstanding here, very hard to ague otherwise.

Wasn’t released at the time of the album. This was a demo that was shelved and only released years later. Abba would often use nonsense or half-baked lyrics until they were sure they were going to use the song. Have you reacted to The Name of the Game yet? I can’t remember - great song.

The song was originally planned as an opener and title for the "super trouper" album. shortly before the album was finished, "sombrero" was replaced by "super trouper". I find it interesting that Agnetha and Frida sing very high and the song as a whole is very unusual. First as an album opener and then straight into the archive is a sharp drop from "album opener quality" to "archive". thanks

In order to judge this song appropriately, one should deal a little more with the lyrics. Music and lyrics complement each other in a wonderful way. Yes, it's a breakup song, but more of an ironic one. The woman describes her former lover as "caballero" - Spanish for knight or a knight in WHITE armor. Unfortunately, a knight who is not endowed with knightly virtues. He's too self-absorbed for that, too narcissistic. His self-image is shaped by toxic masculinity. He copied his ideal of masculinity from old western films. He can't stand a strong woman standing up to him. So she suggests that they compete against each other in a showdown to find out who is the stronger one. Or he should look for a "sweet señorita" who doesn't dare contradict him and can live with his emotional coldness. Not a man a modern woman would endure by her side. The ironic undertone is reinforced by the music. The somewhat theatrical arrangement underlines the meaning of the text. You might not recognize the underlying humor of this song on first hearing. But it's there if you listen closely.

Like nearly all of ABBA's songs, the basic melody of this was borne from Benny's piano and maybe Bjorn strumming acoustic guitar alongside. That melody suggested a 'Western/Latino' feeling so Bjorn came up with the lyrics and theme. At some point, they likely thought a song that wouldn't be out of place on a 'Western' movie soundtrack would jar on the 'Super Trouper' album. So it was left off and they eventually reworked it to become 'Cassandra'. This still doesn't feel quite finished and I wish they had used real Mariachi band instruments instead of synths. But the singing is stellar and full of passion while telling her cowboy ex-lover to get on his horse and take a hike.

Sombrero was replaced by Super Trouper as the last recorded song for the Super trouper album. The backing track has the feel of a temp track and I would think if they kept working on it, it could have turned into something different. The synths are a bit overbearing. Aspects of it transferred over to Cassandra sometime later . The melody is different but its structure is similar. It stayed in the vaults for a good decade or so before adding it to subsequent re-releases of Super Trouper as an extra. We have to find you a different track to replace Tropical Loveland as a low point. Try Two For The Price Of One. It's the pits.

it's a nice song, but still i always absolutely agree with B&B decision to leave one or another song out... none of the unreleased songs that were in one or the other way released after their break started by the end of 1982 really stuck me... none. I though must admit that Just Like That is the exception to the rule. With this one I love the vocals but not the length of the song with long intro and in general the arrangement. Don't know why... I'm not a fan of Andante Andante and Cassandra neither... though i usually prefer Frida's solo vocals over Agnetha's... but those songs are imo to easy or too much spanish folk...

My tip: sometimes it's a narrow path between spontanous fun reaction and ridiculousness. Stop with ABBA: you have almost done the most important songs of ABBA (perhaps all official videos) except .... but this an other THING. Honest I say thank for your well done often entertaining reactions, specially for you as the young generations, what interested me, to my pleasure. Sometimes it's hard to find the right time to stop?!? If you want go on do as Terry suggested Cassandra (then you can keep track Andante-Put-Cas- ...) or the 3'-tracks from the first two album as ABBA experimented with different music styles - a pure matter of taste which are known to be different. . Weired or confused or surprised?!? The members solo and ABBA started in TV shows in TV and the Swedish Midsummer festivals - a hard school for the later successful versatile concerts especially 77+79+80.
