Even a bootleg put more effort in being faithful to the source material then the Hollywood adaptation. Evolution must of been one of Toriyama's deepest regrets.

Which got him to greenlight Battle of Gods, which lead to Resrruection F, Super, and.... everything that has happened since.

Some creators are so passionate about their creations that they will take on the very companies they helped create when their creation is pushed or used in a way they never intended or wanted it to go. Look at the Super Mario Brothers. After that first live action attempt it was thought Nintendo would never again let their IP be put in another medium ever again. Then nearly 2 decades later we got the Super Mario brothers movie we should of gotten the first time.

I mean, there were a lot of Japanese “B” movies back then. Like a lot of them, this movie knows that it’s bad and embraces it. It’s in “so bad it’s good” territory (in other words, bad, embraced that it’s bad, and thus just hilarious, especially when drunk). The Dragonball Evolution movie thinks that it’s good and just wasn’t.

Yes this is true in that the original Hong Kong Cantonese and mandarin versions of the DB: The magic Begins film are more accurate in their own interpretation translation for most of characters in the movie’s storyline but not all of them completely might I add. And plus their was a Japanese version of this movie released by VAP Inc an subsidiary brand of Fuji TV & the Toei company but it’s practically lost media and incredibly rare to find and also in proves this film is shockingly not an bootleg movie like most websites covering the history of the motion picture claim.

15:51 I think it refers to old Demon King Piccolo eating the Dragon Balls so no one can take it away without killing him. He spat it out back after defeating Kamesennin and Chaoz. This one might've had the same plan, considering he's unkillable without spesific means. Doing that that is backfiring him is actually creative though.

Tbf about the Oolong thing i think they just took inspiration from Zhu Bajie the celestial Swine from the original Journey to the west story, Zhu Bajie is depicted as a Black Boar in most media adaptations. Edit: Zhu also has a Rake as his main weapon which Oolong is shown using in his first appearence during this movie

You didn't get the part about the pig guy, he isn't Oolong, he is a character which inspired oolong from the journey to the west. That's why he is black, has a rake and calls monkey boy "master", they've taken this from the book

It's weird that they chose to change Oolong's skin tone, maybe the ears and nose looked even worse when light skinned, so they painted the actor and the nose and ears black to (poorly) hide the flaws. Who knows? But one thing is for certain, this is not, by definition, blackface. And no, just because his true form is light skinned, that does not make the transformation blackface. He was transformed into a pig monster, not a minstrel character portraying black people in a derogatory and insulting way.

Look... this is not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination! But... A lot of the things you complain about are actually somewhat faithful to the original! Obviously, it's not 1 to 1, far from it! But it gets certain character traits correctly and it has very similar story beats! It's a lot better than evolution for sure!

Back when I was in elementary school I watch this movie over and over and only watch DB evolution once, it's a far superior adaption because it keep the spirit of dragonball. I write this while listening, man those english dub voice is so awkward wow... So different from my language 6:44 the pig seemed to be based more on his journey to the west version than the dragon ball one, they both lecher but one is a man eating demon try googling Zhu Bajie journey to the west and you see it... except for the color

I dont think the version of oolong was necessarily black face, since normally that w😮ould imply they make him act and spund like a black stereotype. I think they were trying to make him look like a warthog which is a type of pig, since he has the ears and hair if one. But idk just speculation. They say the same thing about mr popo being black face when really hes suppose to be a reference to a mythological japanese god. So you really shouldnt assume black face judt because a character has black skin and red lips.

Nah dude this film is awesome LMAO, there's so much here infinitely better than Evolution it's insane even as a cheap little bootleg film. The casting, the outfits, the locations and sets... down to it even using Toriyama's inspiration for Dragon Ball as an inspiration for it's action sequences (old chinese Kung-Fu films). Only thing I don't like is the dubbing and Puar being a bird lol

There's no way that The Magic Begins is worse than Evolution. The story, tone, and spirit are far more faithful to the source material, and it's a lot closer to how Toei would've produced a live-action Dragon Ball: a flashy, wacky tokusatsu production.
