Another great Alaska video and a trip down memory lane. When we were there in '96 the Matanuska Glacier was a highlight. At that time you could walk on the glacier without a guide. We spent hours there. In hindsight perhaps not the greatest idea. There were very high ice cliffs where people were climbing and repelling. An awesome experience. Thanks again for the memories. Stay safe.

Whoa, that trek on Matanuska Glacier sounds pretty amazing, but also terrifying at the same time. What an experience! As you'll see in future episodes, we try to hike to a nearby glacier later on, but the closer we got, we kept asking ourselves, "Is this really such a good idea?" Thanks for watching and commenting, and for sharing your incredible experience. How lucky you were to walk upon Matanuska Glacier!

Loved this one. My Sister and a few cousins lived in Palmer at one time. They took me up to the Matanuska Glacier and we hiked out on it. Stupid, but amazing. Up the road a few hours we stopped to go fishing for Grayling's. Ha...We bought a few beers and went down to the creek. I would lift up my mosquito net to take a drink and the mosquitoes would flood the inside of my hood. My Brother-in-Law (the one who is going with us to Laos in Feb) was laughing at me. He would just press his beer against the mesh and drink it through it. Oh my...Marisa, I laughed when you swatted away a bug and casually remarked, "They have bugs here." Biggest understatement I've heard about Alaska. Ride on.

Just awesome. I go every year from NC. Rented HD once to ride it. This year riding from NC round-trip on 1250GSA. Drones...have a DJI Zoom. Took it on a 14,000 mile US cross country ride. It's "supposed" to track. Was very disappointed with the lack of tracking. Bought a SKYDIO2. Game changer! Brent Pearson another KZbinr I follow is why I bought it. You'll love it. DJI has better controllers. Folds up smaller. SKYDIO2 better tracking. Does not pack as small. Ride safe!
@2UpAndOverloaded
@2UpAndOverloaded Жыл бұрын
Thank you Rick for the great drone info! That's really good advice, and actually, we've heard the same. The SKYDIO drones have the best tracking and following out there, at least that's what I've heard from people who really know their drones. They avoid obstacles and do all the things... Whereas our DJI Mini 2 can only sense the ground. I almost ran it into a tree once. But like you said, the SKYDIOs are much bigger, and we simply did not have the room to carry one with us (you may have noticed that we are somewhat overloaded). That being said, we are thinking of possibly upgrading the drone at some point in time, maybe even soon. Unfortunately not to a SKYDIO but maybe another foldable DJI with more features. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. A lot of riders out there are looking into drones to "elevate" their footage, and this type of knowledge is extremely helpful.
@rickgoforth8308
@rickgoforth8308 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you guys are familiar with Itchy Boots. She uses a DJI and has good luck with it. One of the reasons SKYDIO2 is so good at tracking is the cameras are permanent. Like anything in life, give and take. I made a special case to carry my SKYDIO2. But, I understand the space limitations. Even traveling solo, it can be a challenge. Happy New Year to you guys. I'll join as a patron to help you out. I'm a retired military and airline pilot. I ride about 25,000 miles a year. Be safe!

Very glad y'all got a break with the weather. Yes I said Y'all, it's a word in Virginia. Lol. So many videos you have posted where the weather has been terrible. I'm looking forward to making my trek to Alaska. Hopefully in 2023. Yes very soon. What time of the year were you there??? Hard to tell by the weather in the videos since Alaska's weather is so diverse. I'll be bringing my motorcycle but I don't think I have the intestinal fortitude at my age to make the 10,000 mile trip on 2 wheels alone. So, small toy hauler and my Triumph it shall be. I'm glad you are having fun with it. One day I would like to share coffee/Tea/ or a beer with you for the motivation and inspiration to do the thing. Enjoy and Safe travels.

@2UpAndOverloaded Жыл бұрын
Hi Troy Patterson, I'm excited for your future Alaska plans. And hey, getting there with a toy hauler doesn't change the fact that you will be riding stunning roads that will take your breath away! As far as timing, we were there in August, and this video was filmed at the end of August. We got into Alaska at the beginning of August, and yes, that is the beginning of the rainy season. But from what I've heard, July and June have their problems too. July is the height of wildfire season which rendered a lot of central and northern Alaska impassable from the smoke last summer. And June is very very cold, the worst with bugs, and also very rainy (so I've heard). I think late July is best for southern Alaska and then early August the best for the north, but honestly, it's going to boil down to if you have enough time to wait for lucky days. But no matter what, your trip will be epic. As you see in our videos, we hit rain almost every day, but there were still glorious moments in between. Thank you for writing in and sharing your plans with us! Any other questions you have, just ask!

what yall might consider is attaching the controller to the backpack somehow? I've seen people use the MOLLE panel on their tank bag to mount the controller so they can see their drone shot live while it active tracks.

The DJIs are so great for what we do. Easy to control and you get better very fast with practice. The Skydio works a bit better for my solo stuff since I don't have to worry about it crashing into things.

We may try to sell the 2 and snag the mini 3. The landscape to portrait mode, plus more sensors and a better follow mode is a big difference.
@MeerkatADV

@2UpAndOverloaded I have the Air 2 and like it a lot. Just be aware it'll never keep up on its own very well, the visual tracking isnt as good as the Skydio. Over about 20mph you'll lose it pretty quick. The increase in camera quality will be nice, and obstacle avoidance sensors are always helpful.

damn! the music was good on this one and the filming was reallly great too...very beautiful scenery especially the water falls at the gorge...with practice it is possible to film yourselves on the bike while moving....i have tried it several times alone where i attach the controller on my tank bag with Hook and Loop Tape Sticky Back or vecro to keep it in place and connect it to my pixel(phone) on the dash and it really produces nice footage when set correctly...go a bit low though don't set up the drone too high...with the advantage of you being 2UP i guesa after some practice you will nail it...Marisa needs some drone flying lessons😂 with "tight spaces" beign emphasized...the drone footage has really improved the imersiveness of your videos...tuned for PART 2 of this episode
@2UpAndOverloaded
@2UpAndOverloaded Жыл бұрын
Thank you Cypha, that is really good advice! So you are absolutely correct in that we need to put it a little lower and Marisa needs to work on her drone flying skills while on the motorcycle. But one time she was trying to fly it really low, we were headed the opposite direction, and she nearly flew it into a tree! This drone does not have good sensors, so it was almost a disaster. So we have a lot to work on, and we may even invest in a drone that has the sensors. Baby steps I say! Thanks once again for watching and commenting with such great advice, maybe we'll try the sticky tape thing 😉!

Hey guys, great content thanks for sharing. I have a question if you don't mind. What time of year this is filmed. I'm curious because I am making almost the same trip in 2023. We plan on leaving on July 5 from California and riding the Canadian Rockies to Dawson City over to Alaska up to Dead horse. Then down to Kenai, we plan to ferry from Whittier to Valdez and return on the west side of Canada. I ask because you guys seem to be hitting lots of rain. Thank you in advance ride safe and I look forward to your next video. Scott.
@2UpAndOverloaded
@2UpAndOverloaded Жыл бұрын
Great question Scott Wood! We filmed this day at the end of August, August 30 to be exact. We got into Alaska at the beginning of August and yes, that is also the beginning of the rainy season. But June and July have their issues too. June is so quite cold and rainy and the bugs are at their worst, so I've heard. July is fire season, and wildfires and smoke made it miserable and some areas inaccessible for many riders this past year. If we had to do it again I think I would aim for mid to late July and early August. But no matter what, there will be lucky and unlucky days, so giving yourself plenty of time is definitely the way to go. I think your plan looks awesome, because leaving on July 5 from California should meet up with my "ideal" timeline perfectly. Also be aware that ferries sometimes only go once a week, you have to really plan for that in advance and hope for good weather, which is why it didn't work out for us. Thank you Scott for the question and for watching and commenting. Any other questions we'll do our best to answer!!
@scottwood1953

@@2UpAndOverloaded Thank you for responding. We are planning on taking a short break in Kenai to aid in the timing of the ferry schedule. My father lives there and we hope to go fishing for a couple days. I figured your timeline was close to what you said. I'm trying to guage the amount of rain we'll incounter. I keep telling my coriders that it could be substantial but they aren't hearing it. I lived on Prince of whales Island for 12 years and have seen it rain for months. Your help is appreciated. Again ride safe maybe we'll cross paths somewhere.
