In my entire life, I have never actually seen a team get called for submitting a wrong line-up. That changed tonight, I'll take a look at that, and the history of the rule for tonight's NHL hockey video.

There used to be a rule in the 90s in minor hockey that if you were not on the sheet, you could not play. However, I'm glad the new rule is for the player that is not on the sheet is just to put their name on the sheet.

Back when I played beer league this penalty came up ALL THE TIME because we were all really lazy with our lineup sheet and constantly had the wrong people on the ice. We all thought it was dumb, even the refs, because this was beer league, but "a rule's a rule and I gotta call it" was the mantra and a lot of games ended up starting 4v4.
@darranedmundson1505
@darranedmundson1505 Жыл бұрын
I would have thought you'd start 5v5 since in minor hockey and many beer leagues, penalties on the same stoppage of play are considered coincidental and should cancel. I can see how this would play out though: bench minor for team A gets put on the clock, bench minor for team B gets flagged and also put on the clock, ...
@chris7jakarta
@chris7jakarta Жыл бұрын
in this video they explain the other team has to request a penalty for the other team. in your case you say your game started 4v4, why would you request a penalty to the ref if your own lineup is not correct?

@@chris7jakarta I don't know how the rules changed in the 20 years since I played, or if it's a difference between USA Hockey and NHL rules, but it was always the scorekeeper that flagged us, not anyone on either team.

@@hefrsr in high school your coach takes a technical foul for any lineup mistakes. in one instance i remember my coach wanted to give one player some time in a varsity game but she wasn’t in the lineup in the scorebook because she only played JV up to that point. he took the technical and the game continued. (iirc 2 technicals on a coach gets them thrown out of the game, but besides scorebook mistakes the only other way for a coach to get a technical is if the ref gives them one for behavior or language.) the other team gets one free throw and possession of the ball each time your team takes a technical.

Refereed lacrosse for years and this was also something we had to have the score keepers check (it was on their list of game duties). We'd see people write in the wrong jersey numbers all the time, which would be a problem if something were to go to a hearing due to suspension (the wrong player would be summoned). I never issued a penalty for it. I usually just had each coach amend it during warmup. However if I also missed it, and the score keeper didn't check, it was a bench minor, as you see here.

Every sport has rules in regard to it's lineups except for football. There is no exchange of lineup cards in football. I used to work baseball and softball. One weekend during an ASA fastpitch tournament I had the plate for the last game of the evening on a Saturday night. The exchange of lineup cards goes like this: The visiting team gives the plate umpire a copy of their lineup, the plate umpire looks it over to see that there are no obvious mistakes like not having the correct amount of players in the starting lineup. The PU then asks the visiting coach if this is the lineup he wants and we allow him to inspect it one last time. If he says yes we tender him a copy and his lineup is now official. Lather, rinse, repeat with the home team. When I get both lineups approved by the coaches the game is now officially started for lack of a better term. That night at this point, the sprinkler system came on and there was no one from the city to turn them off. The game had to be suspended and postponed and started before Sunday's morning round of games. Both lineups were now official and any changes the coaches needed to make at 7AM while still half asleep the next morning counted as official substitutions.
