Ed, I don't know your planned route or if you have already been warned, however, if you are going through the State of Victoria, they have recently legislated that cyclist are not permitted to operate any hand-held device while moving (ie phone, camera etc). The fine is a quite hefty AUD$376.00 for memory (but I stand to be corrected).

A few years back, I spent 6 months bicycle touring in Australia (2 months in New Zealand too) and it was amazing. The people were very friendly and helpful and the land was spectacular. All the flora and fauna are like nothing you've ever seen. While there I caught the World Surfing Championships south of Perth and the World Hang gliding Championships at Buffalo mountain in the east. Safe journey to you, G'day

Lots of people here worried about can safety. OK, it's _possible_ but really, how often does can-poisoning actually happen, when the contents is beans? If it's still airtight it should be OK.

The beans are irrelevant. Its the can thats the issue and Clostridium botulinium is a fatal toxin, you wont necessarily see or smell it in the food and if the can is severely dented and rusty, then it could produce slight rips in the seam of the lid. Its just not worth the risk especially when youre out alone in a vast country with probably seldom by-passers.
