More than 20 AFL players have played in the NFL. starting with Pat O'dea in 1896, yes 1896, aussie rules was played before the American civil war, it started in 1858. O'dea was a College Football Hall Of Famer, an all American player and set many kicking records.

When you watch the last goal in the video when all the players are celebrating you can see the video footage shaking that is from the crowd going crazy that kick won us (Essendon Bombers) the Anzac Day game it is the biggest game of the season there was close to 100,000 people at that game only the Grand final is a bigger game, the Anzac Day game is played between the Essendon Bombers and the Collingwood Magpies the game is pure emotion and Anzac Day is the day Australia remember and give thanks to the people who have gone to war and those who sadly lost their lives for our country it is a very emotional and prode day for all Australian's... Yes, there is a goal at either end of the ground (that's what we call it, rather than field or pitch), just like any other football code. Extra time is added to each quarter when ever the ball is out of play - after a goal, when it goes out of bounds, when the umpire stops the play for a ball up etc. So the quarter is 20 mins + "time on", which is usually around 10 mins, so the quarter goes for about 30 mins. There are no time outs. There is 5 mins between the 1st and 2nd quarters ("quarter time") and between the 3rd and 4th quarter ("3/4 time") and 20 mins between the 2nd and 3rd quarter ("half-time"), so the whole games lasts for about 2.5 hrs. When you are at the game, you see a clock counting up, so you are never certain exactly when the quarter or game will end (unless you check it on your phone, of course), so that adds to the anticipation and excitement in a close game. On TV, the clock counts down, so you know when it will end. Nick, you lost the bet; the "referees" are called umpires. This is because Australian Rules football was invented in 1858 as a way of keeping cricketers fit over winter. So much of the terminology in Australian rules and cricket is similar ("laws of the game" rather than rules [despite the fact that it is called Australian RULES football], "boundary" rather than sideline or end zone and "umpire" rather than referee. Yes, they have to bounce the ball every 15 m. This gives the opposition the chance to catch the player with the ball so that he cannot just run the length of the ground. As a result of being formed as a means of keeping cricket players fit in the winter the officials are called umpires, just like cricket. You can see why Australian cricketers are often more physical and aggressive than other countries - when this is how they kept fit 150 years ago. It is in the DNA.

The umpires are often marathon runners. They have to be super fit to cover the ground. The umpires used to wear white but when some teams were playing it was hard to tell the difference between players and umpires so now the umpires wear different colours, often green or yellow, depending on the colours of the teams playing.

Umpires have to be able to run backwards, as they have to keep watching the ball all the time. Extra time can be 10 minutes or more per quarter. Time stops when the ball goes across the line for a goal, and restarts once the ball has been returned to the centre square. It also stops if the ball goes out of play and restarts when the ball is kicked back in (from a free kick) or when the boundary umpire throws it back in. Time can stop for infringements as well, restarting when the umpire indicates.

The officials are called umpires. They are all relatively small and slim because they have to do a lot of running to keep up with the play (the field and boundary umpires do anyway). There are 3 field umpires, 4 boundary umpires and 2 goal umpires.

It must be a kick by the attacking team to score a goal (six points) but a behind (one point), can be scored by a kick, handball, deflection off the hand or body by either the attacking or defending team. The longest goals at this level are from kicks of over 75 metres (82 yards).

The umpires wear different colours, depending on which teams are playing, and tend to have distance runner builds, as they cover several kilometres each game. Back in the day, before they had away jumpers (they used to have different colour shorts for home and away games - I think away was white?) the umpires used to wear white, and the goal umpires wore what were essentially white lab coats and white pork pie hats

The moments need some context, I think. One of those shown was the winning goal of the 2009 ANZAC Day game between Essendon and Collingwood. Check out the final 5 minutes of the game here kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJzKnaZtqqeZeMU Note, traditionally at the grounds the clocks always counted up, so nobody in the crowd would know the actual time left. At some stage the broadcasters started showing the actual clock, which counted down, except for a few years where on particular broadcaster changed from the countdown clock to the more traditional timer with 5 minutes of the game remaining. The game clock stops when there is a score, when the ball goes out of play, the umpire calls for a ball up (like a jump ball) or there is an injury requiring a stretcher. The clock starts when the play resumes. The commentators on this video are from one of the radio stations that cover the AFL, not the actual TV broadcaster.

Per head of Capita Aussie Rules is the most spectated sport in the world, the record attendance was back in 1970 with 121,696 spectators at the MCG, since then standing room has been replaced with seating and it only holds 100,000 people now. The Collingwood Magpies are the most supported club with home games averaging over 80,000 and a million plus through the turnstiles every season, they are also the most successful club of all time with the most premierships and the best win rate over 128 years of the competition. 🏳🏴

Umpires are thin because they have to run around 10 miles a game. They don't get substituted like the players and have to be really fit to run that far and still be composed enough to make good decisions at the end of games. Probably the hardest sport in the world to umpire.

I haven't watched the original video but on this one the 'moments' part could probably use a little explanation. Most of these 'moments' are from very close games, if you noticed the scores, with almost no time left on the clock, where a goal either way will win it for either team. Since you have to account for time on, once the clock ticks over 30 minutes, the siren can go at literally any time, so if your team is ahead by one point, you are screaming for the final siren to go in case the other team scores, but it could be another minute or two before it does. You never really know. These last-second game-winning goals (or game-winning defensive saves) are known as 'clutch' moments, and are absolute heart-stoppers!

That wasn’t extra time by the way. The clocks used to count up so you never really knew when the siren would go. Because there is a 20 minute timer but every time the play stops the clock stops. But they used to just keep a clock rolling for viewing and another clock that they would stop.

You should watch Essendon domination: The best of the Bombers 20 game winning streak 2000. Essendon became the only side in VFL/AFL history to win the first 20 games of the season. They lost to the Western Bulldogs and then went on to won the 2000 Grand Final

Our Aboriginal indigenous players have always been by far the best at trick shot goals. Sav Rocca, Ben Graham and Darren Bennett all had long AFL careers before having long NFL punting careers. Umpires they are.

Extra Time (or "Time On" as the AFL calls it) is at certain stoppages such as ball-ups, boundary throw-ins and scores. Additionally, you'll occasionally see the umpire raise their hand in the air and blow the whistle - which indicates to the time scorers to stop or start the timers (in particular if they're making a player line up for goal, or if play can't proceed for some reason). All of this adds up, and so a typical quarter will go for about 27minutes (and in some games you'll often see them tick past half an hour - especially at grounds where it takes a while to retrieve the ball after a goal. At 23 minutes there'd still be a bit of time to play - unless it's been a goal-less quarter with few stoppages (typically a game with fewer goals has more stoppages).....

Another unique thing about AFL is that the refs (umpires), have to master their own particular skill and that is to bounce the ball before each quarter starts and after every goal. This is not easy and involves a fair degree of skill and some strength. Maybe some one else might be able to tell if there is another sport in which the umpire has to have a particular physical skill to fulfil their role?

Should react to rugby league aswell like rugby but less rules, faster paced and more exciting, NRL is the premier competition for league in Australia, definitely think you’d like getting into that aswell as as state of origin ( a 3 match representative series within the NRL competition where guys are picked for their state to play against one another, only nsw and Queensland play against each other and is without doubt one of the greatest spectacles of any sport anywhere to watch even more valued then the grand final or playing for your country because of the rivalry)

I don't understand what seems to be your reluctance to use videos from the AFL channel itself. When everything you do view is all AFL owned footage via some 3rd party channel. Each week the AFL release lots of great content, including highlights from each game as well as highlights from the current round as a whole & these would all be perfect for reacting to. I pretty sure you won't get a copyright strike. Why would you, when none of the other 3rd party channels you use get them? There's only a few rounds to go before the finals & I think reactions to current games would prove very popular.

Crows have shown some good moments this season but as usual with a very young team they just cant put 4 quarters together. Give them another 2 seasons to build and this team will be in the finals (our what you guys call the playoffs)
