God that was a wild place in the 70s - some guy blew himself to pieces making bombs in a shed - you were risking your neck going into the Longlands and Rathcoole even before the troubles. I lived in the white city back when all the roofs were flat - even though it was a rough place - I still loved it. We moved up the Whitewell road when the troubles got bad - I remember trying to go through the white city and they had barricaded it off and guys wearing parkas and masks tried to stop me - even though I could not see their faces, I knew every one of them by their voice and told them so, which shocked them and they let me pass. Interesting times!

Im 76 years old and grew up in the area ,my friend lived in Longlands and i lived in Whitecity we were all mixed and there was never any trouble between us ,religion was never mentioned, Childhood was wonderful the neighbours were great .It was outsiders that caused the problems My late mum said that outsiders put the Catholics out and put a lot of scum in .The place was never the same .I brought my family to Australia in 1981 but ill always yearn for the home that i knew .

We were all put out, our family and our catholic friends.. We lived beside Paddy McShanes but most lived in Dandy Strett and Mount Street.. My Mother says before they built Bawnmore, Greencastle had a cricket team and everyone mixed.. Then came Bawnmore and the Republican element thrived.
