Some things I want to address: I know high ping can be a severe disadvantage in certain gamemodes, primarily crystal and shield based PvP, however these gamemodes are a lot more niche and the disadvantages that high ping causes are tied to specific items. Knockback scaling applies to almost every PvP based gamemode and taking reduced knockback at the price for a little bit higher ping is worth it in so many situations. The affect that ping has on knockback is ridiculous and should not exist in the game. This can easily be fixed by Minecraft servers or by Minecraft itself if they actually cared about PvP

i find it funny that in 1.8, the rod is in nearly every major pvp loadout to halt enemy movement and start combos, and in most rod-less loadouts you're given blocks to do the same thing, both of which become horrendous to use on high ping. then high ping players move to 1.9 and they not only lose the disadvantage of laggy rods or blocks, but also gain the advantage of less kb

Another problem with ping: on your screen you are blocking your shield, on opponents (much higher ping then you) not yet. On their screen everything is normal, on your screen you get hit through your shield

Pretty sure shield blocking is handled by the server, thus it should not be affected by client ping. It should rather be the other way around. The low ping player might have their shield blocked while the high player can't yet see it.

I'm so glad someone finally made this video about 1.9 pvp n ping.. I play alot of minemen, but lately been mainly playing 1.9 pvp the past few months, n tbh the more I play 1.9 the more I realize how nerfed it is, I can easily combo people below 75 to 80 ms, but when fight someone at 80 ms or above I can never combo them! I kinda did this exact experiment with my friend who's wifi is not good at the moment n it's close to impossible to combo them. It's true 1.9+ pvp takes alot of skill in pvp, there are so many game modes to master n learn, but I feel now people are just dissing 1.8 pvp saying it takes no skill which is not true, sure u have to spam click but people also gotta understand there's more to is beside spamming. There is alot of skill in both versions and there both nerfed in their own ways!

Yeah, like idk why ppl even sau that 1.8 PvP is not skill based, if it was just this easy, like just spam click and that's it then EVERY SINGLE person would be a god but that isn't true I've been playing 1.8 PvP for about 4 years now and I am ok at it but I still get absolutely demolished because I don't know some mechanics or techniques like there are some mechanics and techniques that you have to know/practice to actually become decent at it.

Since we all know pvp is ping based (not completely) but 1.9 especially is because you have gamemodes like crystal, which give an unadvantage to higher ping players, since they can't place crystals fast enough in some situations. But high ping can also be a big advantage in 1.19 pvp because of the knockback you take and is useful in gamemodes such as sword. All things said, I'm glad you addressed these things about the future of pvo, great video.

The issue with 1.9 pvp is that ping is such a penalty. It's like a semi-auto rifle in battlefield. In sword if you use it good/you are lucky you destroy the other guy, otherwise you get flawless. Since you have to time your hits you can't just spam click and wish to have as much damage output as possible like on 1.8

It's starting to get boring, do that's why I'm probably gonna make the switch to 1.9. But you are right, in gamemodes such as sword high ping players do have the advantage, because of their wierd knockback,making them very hard to combo. That's why your best chance in those kind of situations you have to either critspam combo or strafe around them.

Ping is a very large issue in 1.9 I agree and was addressed very well in this video and to become a truly good 1.9 player you need to know how to overcome different pings, it is what can separate a t3 from a t2, you need to completely change your playstyle in order to counter it (and if done effectively makes you a more versatile player) but, whether you like it or not, it is a flawed feature that is here to stay so, in the nicest possible way, people just gotta deal with it lol. However this does allow ping spoofing where people deliberately raise their ping to gain an advantage which does really suck. Also, re timing of hits can almost completely counter high ms if done correctly, if you would like to watch this done effectively, i would recommend watching Vexaay Vs Kylaz, Vexaay is by far the best at doing this

In 1.8 knockback scaling actually makes sense anddoesn't cause issues for competitive play (sure it's nice for combos without it on mmc, but in a competitive scenario the opponent would back out before it becomes relevant). In 1.9 tho it always annoyed me even on low ping since kb is already low enough.

about the knockback to put it in more technical terms, the vertical limit works differently on 1.9 than in 1.8: - on 1.8 you take no additional vertical knockback after exceeding the vertical limit - on 1.9 you take negative vertical knockback after exceeding the vertical limit this is why knockback scaling is a thing on 1.9 but not 1.8

Ok so ping nowadays, from my experience, doesn't really effect 1.9 pvp that much. Reason being there are countless ways to counter it, most common being slightly delaying your kb hits to deal full knockback, but somtimes if the timing is a bit off the enemy can hit you back and end the combo. But the easier way to counter high ping is critting more than your enemy, or slightly delaying your p crits to get a p crits chain on them even when they are hitselecting, or just get a double crit on them. Now I am not saying that high ping is disadvantageous, but it has both advantageous and disadvantageous much like low ping. It's about taking the advantage of the respective ping.

I have somewhere around 150ms on PvP legacy since I live on the opposite side of the globe relatively to where the server is hosted. That's really saddening but can be fun sometimes, when people get destroyed and start blaming my high ping (mostly they are right). People there sometimes don't hold themselves and say whatever they want. It seems that you can say literally anything in chat there and get away with it. And I really appreciate it.

In my opinion 1.8 is a better pvp system, because you have a quick fight and go on, while 1.9 and above look cooler, almost feels medival in a way, however its super annoying when you have to fight one guy for 4 hours because he just keeps running away and eating steaks (assuming you are not on a server of course)

I think the smartest option is to not reduce/remove it as then, high ping players would basically fly like on bedrock, but to make the game calculate the entire vector of the players kb first, both on client and server, calculate after what time the player needs to be at what position and make the client send time stamps to the server so that it knows what values to use to calculate the kb of the next hit. Also, using a ping tracker the client could also send a packet to the server that adds the ms of ping to the values to basically cancel out ping.

1.8 isn't just spam clicking, but also knockback manipulation, but that's literally what makes 1.8 so confusing to learn, like sprint resets aren't intuitive at all, or the fact that crits are bad since you lose the reach advantage, not to mention that if you have 100ms more ping than your opponent, if they have 10cps, they're guaranteed to get the 1st hit 1.9 is way more straight forward and less ping-based, also features more strategy/complexity, knockback isn't as significant as in 1.8, but still does its thing

Its a lot of things. 1.8.9 is very fast paced and you need to use tons of items at once. You need to learn moving mechanics and just small strategies that make up most of the game. Its not the combat that makes the game though. Its the server

Plus it’s not just sprint resetting. Ive played 1.8 and have put a lot of time into mastering it. The hole goes real deep with 1.8 and I’d say is even more complex than 1.9+ due to the community being around for longer - alongside its unintuitive learning curve. minecraft calculates knockback relative to "motion" x, y and z not position x, y and z this also explains "knockback scailing". Also im pretty sure the ping threshold needed for "knockback reduction" will change depending on how the server calculates player position and motion, etc. usually it would be similar because there are normalized ways to deal with these values.

I agree with everything you said in the video, although I must say that being in the air longer because of higher ping can still be a bad thing. In crystal pvp (one of the most popular categories of 1.9+ pvp), the main attack is called hit-crystal, which is basically hitting your opponent in the air and then crystalling below their feet. Meaning if a player has a higher ping, therefore staying longer in the air, the attacker has more time to crystal below their feet, meaning the player with the higher ping has a bigger chance to lose if they get hit-crystalled.

my experience on pvp legacy truly resonate with this vid. being aussie, my ping on legacy is 250. im axe main and i wanna be dueling good players out there, but they usually sword spam me after a shield break as taking advantage of my ping. every 2 hits i get a reduced kb, causing me unable to time my pcrits within a sufficient time frame and just dies. now i know to not rely on pcrit on high ping tl;dr: the reduced kb make pcrits more difficult to time for the pinger

im 90% sure ping works in chunks of 50s aka it dosent matter if you have 1 or 40 ping you (because of how minecraft works) will basically have 50 ping (same thing with 59 or 70 both ping values will be put at 100) . I feel like this makes it so the ping issues arent that big until you get to a 100+ ping diffrence. This is how it works in 1.8 so im not exactly sure if any networking changes were made for 1.9+ so take this info with a grain of salt

A major problem is that people are not educated enough on 1.8 pvp. Some even believe some of these outlandish myths: - Every click deals damage. This isn't true; you can only be damaged once every 0.5 seconds. - It's purely cps based. No, I can win fights against people no matter what cps I click. - Knockback reduction is easy; you do not take knockback with high cps - no, kb reducing is simply the slowdown you get from hitting someone, which transitions from a true sprinting to a false sprinting. In true sprinting, you deal more knockback, lose more hunger, etc. (one reason w tapping is important) - Not skill - Ok lmao, I can't win with autoclicker and against people much better than me, not at all.

I’ve tried and enjoyed bedrock edition pvp. What I love is how the hits only go up and not much out. This is much better imo, as i’ve fought 300+ pingers on bedrock, and all that was really affected was trades, although the low ping experience was obviously smoother. In the cts, high ping is mainly a disadvantage, because even if the hits stack and you take reduced knockback, you can hit them faster again, or tap s so the reduced knockback doesnt break the combo and then switch to the trident to get more reach and catch the combo. 1.8’s biggest downside is default knockback dealing too much kb to hold long combos, and minemen knockback having flyers all the time.

This is admittedly true, but I will note that in cases of very high ping, kb can "stack up" over multiple hits and send a person flying into the void all at once. The hits they deal to you in the meantime can be handled by jump resets, which disadvantages high ping players in void gamemodes given optimal gameplay. High-ish ping, you can still combo (just space them out in between sword hits and S tap), so the most "unfair" range is usually in between 150-230ms. This range is bad, but Minecraft does give one disadvantage to high ping in 1.9 PvP, and that's vertical knockback, which is delayed just as horizontal knockback. If you crit a high ping player in a specific way (I forget the exact technique, but it involves double crits), you'll simply be able to get more hits on them, since they'll be stuck in the air unable to crit multiple times while you're outdamaging them. Given that this works even on void maps (again, jump resets to handle the kb they deal out), high ping isn't a (major) advantage in a competitive setting in sword. Other gamemodes alternately disadvantage or advantage high ping, most notably crystal, but altogether it's definitely a manageable thing to fight against, besides in strictly combo duels - which is a very artificial gamemode.

Fun fact having 100 ping is mostly the best ping for pvping on Minecraft cause I will see no teleport and u have better comboes cause u can use the input delay to hit players more times in a combo

You made it see like its very easy for high ping players but its not because when a low ping player hits a high ping player the high ping player take delayed kb due to which low ping player can get 2 hits in the time high ping player lands back and when the high ping player is hit he takes kb and is in the sir while the other player is on the ground and can move so to counter this high ping player need to have a really good aim so I think that creates a little skill difference

I 100% agree, as a 230ping player i have to say that my experience with the game has been very toxic and demotivating, as my ping gets in the way of many things and makes pvp not as fun

I play pvp legacy where most people have over 90 ping and I always had a suspicion that ping had an effect when i tried to learn how to combo

As someone who constantly has ping above 100ms, 80-150ms is the sweet spot. Anything above that and the lag is just unbearable and outways the advantages.

If you are frozen in 1.19 and start crit spamming your opponent, your hits will still register.

Also don't forget the fact that people could be somewhere different on their side of the screen compared to the server which can cause missed hits and then the other person can use that.

Everyone still remember high ping is still annoying as shit. The kb advantage is not a bit advantage compared to other stuff that comes with high ping. Me personally, i have a pretty high ping in non europian servers, around 130-190 and the amount of hitreg and delayed hits are unthinkable. Even thou intel is saying that its easier to combo on high ping, Im not standing with that. When playing with a both high ping and low ping its better with low ping, trust me. Sorry for my bad english, take care❤️

It's so much easier to combo with high ping before stray added the Asia proxy I used to play on pvp legacy and get 200 ms and easily combos all the players all u have to do is delay ur wtap and s tapping is alot easier

as a major 1.9 main. i completely agree with the ping issue. i honestly just try and not fight players with high ping. which should not be a thing. but unfortunately the odds mojang cares at ALL is very low..

In sword high ping is extremely op however I think I'm mode such as axe and crystal. When in axe for example p criting is impossible with weird kb as you don't go up immediately and well in crystal u can't place crystals fast at all. I guess I've always considered facing laggy players as another aspect that comes with learning 1.9 pvp (kinda like sword, axe, crystal, etc). Learning the mechanics of why it is so was rather interesting tho. All in all, nice vid :)

Why 1.8 pvp is better: easier to understand, better for people who have higher ping since they have more chances of hitting people. Fast paced and well, not necessarily just spam clicking or whatever the noobs say. Strafing and movement in general is extremely important too. I just feel like the beginners feel discouraged when watching good players play, when in reality they just have to learn really, like how i did. But i do think +1.9 combat is better FOR REGULAR MINECRAFT Its way more balanced and fun to fight against mobs in the new combat actually, it feels more challenging and well, balanced, mainly with shields and all. But god i do think regular 1.9 is tedious to watch depending on the gamemode Still, the best fix to all of that would be if the 1.8 combat just had an autoclicker in game like in the combat snapshots that mojang forgot about it I completely blame mojang for dividing the community that way back in 2016, screw them for that

Well, the 1.9+ combat system was created for mobs killing, to have more fun. Tbh, it wasn't that much fun in PvE in 1.8. or bellow

One thing intel has not address is that higher ms delays your hit registration and knockback effect which causes me to lose a lot of fights and makes comboing ALOT more harder when I'm on high ping (I'm an AS player so ye)
