Lots of folks have been asking about the rifle and load I was shooting so here ya go! This is a custom kit rifle I put together 20 years ago. Unfortunately I don't recall where it came from or who the manufacturer is. As for loads, I was shooting 90 grains of FFFg behind a 275 grain Maxi-Hunter conical bullet. I've killed several elk with patched round balls but this rifle shoots much tighter groups (3" at 100 yards) with the conical bullets. I've got it sighted to 3" high at 50 yards and it's about 3" low at 100.

Hello Clay! Hope this finds you well. I had a quick question, I am building a osage bow, going off your book, the Bowyers handbook, great info! Anyway the stave i have does not have a sapwood layer, it's just rock hard right at the start, is this normal? If so do I need to still take it down to a single ring,?? as it looks like the it had a good first ring right under the bark. Sorry hope that's not confusing 😄

Nice rifle & load. My huntin' rifle likes the Lyman plains bullets a little better over 80gr 3f & a felt wad. I'm old enough now I "cheat" with a Williams peep sight for anything over 30 yards but in my TN woods that's about as far as I can shoot thru the heavy brush. Nice to see someone else who knows 3f won't "blow up" a 50 or 54 cal rifle(I like my 54). And anyone who can shoot that well with a flintlock can shoot pretty much anything well. I've seen other videos where you talk about the value of wool & wanted to ask if you have any experience with Weatherwool? They're expensive but if their claim are true I may decide I need to try them.

Angela, comments like yours help me realize how fortunate I've been to grow up hunting and have been for 45+ years. There's nothing like it. It's not easy, which makes everything that much more rewarding, kill or no kill. I wouldn't have it any other way. On a side note, besides restaurants, I haven't bought beef in 29 years, since my daughter was born, which I love! 😉 As mentioned, don't be overwhelmed, but start with the basics of hunter safety and go from there.

Yeah starting is the most important step, and Hunters ED is the best place to start, learn how to hunt safely and then start with something small that you can hunt close to home, if you need a place to hunt look for public hunting land near you and start with that. I would suggest just getting out in the woods and try to hunt something small and work you way up from there

My .54 Early Virginian Style Flinter loves those 300 grain Lee REAL bullets, but I only shot 1 spike bull with one. Six by the good ole patched round ball. I have taken 6 white tail and 1 mulie with my .62 caliber and a dozen hogs between the .54 and .62…. Not sure if I can go chase them with the .62… I burned up all my elk preference points in 2020…I don’t know if I have enough time left to go after another… the tags are getting tougher to draw. It is good to see you and others go back in time. I make all my long hunter leather bags and period clothing… but I had to dye my hunting frock blaze orange so I could legally hunt Wyoming during the regular gun season in 2020… my 64 year old legs started burning watching your hunt! Good video, great stock and nice shot, you had them cold turkey. brought back lots of memories of my good friend and I who after many years of center fire hunting , we switched to muzzle loader hunting, we both had TC stocks with Green mountain barrels, in flint and percussion 54 cal flint and 58 cal percussion in Round ball twist. After a couple hundred pounds of lead we cast balls out of and shooting every chance we could , we were very confident anything inside of 125 yards was in our wheel house. My best harvest was a large cow elk on the trot at 75ish yards, the big 58 round ball hit behind the shoulder and stuck in the hide oposit side, she collapsed on her chin in three strides and it was over. we were lucky enough to harvest deer as well as a couple with the flint locks, it is a humbling way to hunt with Black powder muzzle loaders, I had more fails than success but the big win was the experiance.

Coincidentally I just revisited muzzle loading. Our locale has an extended season on white tails. I have retired next to a park with an abundance . 8 years ago sold my modern ML, 209 .50 cal. I thought if I was going to ML, I would go full traditional. The modern ML I had was essentially a single shot rifle accurate to as far as your sights are set for, and Killed 2 moose with it. My buddy had a good quality ML kit he received as a gift 40 years ago, an had just assembled it. I inquired. It was beautiful, some one made him a cash offer he couldn’t refused so I missed it. Would preferred a good quality traditional kit and do myself..but I picked up an original 1845 .45 cal. Halfstock percussion for the same price that my friend sold his reproduction. I’m just going to be extra careful with the original which is a disadvantage. Really enjoy your video’s.

@@clayhayeshunter I had no idea who you were and that you were famous, I don’t watch TV. I will watch it now that the history channel has that alone show. I watched a clip where you commented About eating rabbit heads. In the sixties, I moved to happy valley goose bay. I was 8. I befriended a Cree boy my age named Montgomery, he invited me to eat at his..place. He offered me the rabbit head out of the pot on the stove, I declined. He said it was the best part, and proceeded to show me how to suck the tastiest parts out of the head. Never look a gift rabbit head in the eye ! I’m not sure I would have dealt with the fisher the way you did. 6 years ago an encounter with a large fisher whilst deer hunting. It was actively hunting mid morning , and when it saw me it came directly towards me from 75 yards away, and started up the tree I was in. I was full blaze orange. I had the safety off when it paused halfway up the ladder and approaching the muzzle. I was talking loudly,aggressively..It turned and took off after a pine squirrel sounding alarm. It was a wtf moment that nearly ended badly for one of us depending on my aim. If the camp you were in was your lawful domicile, then the law allows you to protect your “house”. I don’t think you can actively go and hunt it, but defending your domicile is different. I’d never encourage dispatching nuisance critters, and mostly find another solution.

That flintlock is a beautiful piece of history. Such an amazing hunt with a sled ride down the mountain at the end! I'm going to take a sled when I have the chance to go out.

Looks like you could use a good pair of snow shoes! It'd make those long walks a hell of a lot easier! Probably quieter too.

Patience to trek, track was worth it. There were many times I tried hunting at night but gave up catching cold. Hunting like you does ain't easy.
