This is a festival that takes place in one of the districts of Kerala, ie, Thrissur. Basically its a festival related to a Hindu temple but it is actually beyond that. Because the people of Kerala despite their religion gather at the place to enjoy the festival. The portion u were enjoying is called chendamelam. The instrument is called ' chenda'.

Really glad you checked this out. I had put out couple of video links with timestamps of this in your last video about indian percussion...Check it out if you want to get a further insight into it. Regarding the instrument you were wondering about, it's called 'Chenda', and people from Kerala speak the language 'malayalam' and hence called 'malayalis' or 'keralites'(more formal).

The Epicness of this festival cannot be described in words... mildly put, it's out of this world! The beating of drums and other instruments is called Panchvadayam, which means, five instruments literally. This is highly technical performance, just like a Raaga, performed by highly trained and disciplined musicians.

Its not hours, the festival goes on for about 3 days. And yes the Trissoor Pooram festival is a competition between 2 temples. That row of elephants faces another row of elephants on the opposite side. People are in the middle. The winner is judged by the reaction of the crowd to the synchronised display of umbrellas and other decorative displays on the elephants. This festival is centuries old.

In Kerala every Temple conduct these types of function annually... We call it "Ulsavam"... Its like an anniversary kind of thing.... The day the Deity is established or the temple open is celebrated annually.... Chendamelam, Elephants are common... These festivals last for 3--10 days according to the power of temple... And Trissur pooram is the biggest among these... And nothing can compare to it... 💓 And comparing with other states Kerala is the state celebrates more festivals every year.... 🙂❣️

This is an Encient Hindu festival dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. Kerela's encient Hindu temples and their rituals are amazing. And these Rituals Songs ,Hyms, Drums and Precussion dates back to more than 2000 years. In fact all encient South Indian Temples are unique and their festivals are worth watching. In ancient times South Indian Hindu Kings had ruled Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Combodia and Thailand thats whys there you find Similarities between South Indian (Indian) and South East Asian music instruments like Precussion, flute and Music. Indonesia is a Muslim Country but still Indonesia has preserved its past. as Hindu Epics like Ramayana and Mahabharta as their National Heritage especially in Indonesian Island of Bali. Combodian encient Ankurwat temple was a Hindu temple later turn into Buddhist temple. So India ,Indian culture & music had lot of influence over south east asia.

So a bit of fun facts - King called Mr. Shakthan thampuran was the ruler of Thrissur. Vadakkumnatha temple was one of their kingdom’s master temple. Along with this temple there were other temples in successive hierarchical positions which worship different gods and goddess. As per the myth , one among the temple used to conduct a primary form of pooram or gathering but at one point they denied to celebrate along with the master temple. So king decided to conduct their own at the vadakkumnatha temple and he was the mastermind of this festival. There have designed it as co member temples deities join and visit the master temple On top of the elephants. When they all reach at the master temple, it is designed in a way that they compete each other in terms of music, colours, elephants fire works all are arranged in a particular way. There is a definitive structure for each pooram and this is mastered by years of experience. Each departments are carried out by experienced masters and people can melt in to the harmony of music color ritual etc. each group or temple will bring surprise in their presentation and compete each other. Pooram starts weeks before the actual main day where they conduct exhibitions showing the general things and they keep the surprising part as secret to reveal on the pooram day. Bringing god/goddess to main temple on top of a master elephants along with other group is the starting point. There are 2 major temples who compare each other for the orchestra what you watched and their the fire works which follows after. Each team led by a mastero and there will be around 50 + people on each side. Generally instruments in India are devised in to different category. One group is god’s and other is of demons. Former uses inside the temple and other will be used outside the temple depending on the ritual at each temple. The kerala type of drum you seeing is called Chenda is categorised in to demon type and this is a traditional kerala type. The orchestra is 5-6 hours long where they start at lower notes and as time goes it scales up to higher ones. Each time they compete next to each other. After this the elephants will align on both sides and each team will start displaying the colourful umbrellas and decorations with secret designs . This is also part of the competition. It will go couple of hours and later two teams compete in the fireworks . This is the general structure I had heard about pooram. Hope this will help to get a general idea. ( this is not a perfect narration but will help to get an idea)
