This is Queen with Soul Brother. Apparently it was dedicated to Brian May, as he was uncertain what direction Queen was heading with the Hot Space album. Freddie decided to put together this song and gift it him. What a gesture. This is Queen with Soul Brother. Do enjoy the reaction. Thank you.

Lyrics:
God bless my soul, here he comes now
The man with the most, how does he do it, ha
Sure he's got style
He's so heavy
He's a trip
He can do anything, anything, anything
He's my soul brother
He's my best friend
He's my champion
And he will rock you, rock you, rock you
'Cos he's the saviour of the universe
He can make you keep yourself alive
Make you keep yourself alive
Oooh brother
'Cos he's somebody, somebody, you can love
He's my soul brother
When you're under pressure
Feeling under pressure (yeah), pressure (yeah), pressure
He won't let you down
When you're under pressure, oooh
Feeling under pressure, pressure
He won't let you down
Soul brother won't let you down
He won't, he won't, he won't let you down
He can do anything, anything, anything
He's my soul brother
Yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oooh, oooh, oooh
Soul brother
Anything (soul brother), anything (soul brother), anything (soul brother)
He's my soul brother, brother, brother, brother, brother
Anything (soul brother), anything (soul brother)
Anything (soul brother)
He's my soul
Soul brother
He can do anything
He can do anything
'Cos he's
He's my soul brother

Just so special. He could sing anything. Friends & the boys were his world. No matter what happened, they always circled back. “It’s a family, the group is the center.” ~Brian May

Love this song. Unusual sound for Queen:) Yeah Brian had a difficult time during "Hot Space" era. They argued a lot, and Brian said that after one tense argument he came to the studio the next morning and Freddie gave him the tape where he combined all Brian's solos into a symphony. He spent most of the night doing that, to make Brian feel better... He said "i want you to hear them like i hear them, darling". Brian said Freddie always tried to cheer them up after an argument.

I think that happened when they had to end their us tour with hoople due to Brian being in hospital and thought they'd move on without him Freddie took him the cassette of guitar solos

Freddie dedicated the song to Brian May. "Freddie told me one day he had a surprise for me - he said, 'I've written a song about you - but it needs your touch on it!' I think, curiously, we were both working on songs separately which referred to each other. Can't remember which one of mine it was, since a lot of my songs were obliquely aimed at him (as well as to be sung by him!). Anyway. we got in the studio and he played this song. Now whether it was really about me I don't know. But I thought it was fab."

Wow! First time I heard this song as well. Brian was not happy with the disco music on the Hot Space album, neither was Roger. Freddie would be the one to who would be like person who would write a song like this to show Brian how he felt. They were brothers. And Freddie was the most beautiful, caring person. Your reaction was great as usual Hap! Thanks for sharing this song. Freddie 4ever 🤴🏻❤️💯‼️. BTW to me it sounded like soul, gospel and jazz mixed

Loved this song. I think Freddie took so much crap from the press about his sexualjty,,& racism,& xenophobia, etc. Brian & the other guys showed great loyalty & support, they had his back. They continued after his death, sticking up for him on tv & during the filming of the recent movie, doing a lot to help, to try & tell the story in a good way.. Great friends.

I thought you might like to read what Brian wrote on Queenpedia in 2003: "Freddie told me one day he had a surprise for me - he said, ‘I’ve written a song about you - but it needs your touch on it!’ I think, curiously, we were both working on songs separately which referred to each other. Can’t remember which one of mine it was, since a lot of my songs were obliquely aimed at him (as well as to be sung by him!). Anyway. we got in the studio and he played this song. Now whether it was really about me I don’t know. But I thought it was fab. I know he wrote it in about 15 minutes!. As to why not on album (The Game) - well, Freddie deliberately wrote it as a B-side to fill a gap, so I imagine the album was already sewn up.
@GinMae
@GinMae 3 жыл бұрын
Well, this perhaps belies my original impression - (but "he wrote it in 15 minutes"? - so very considered?) -- Of course, Freddie could write a masterpiece in 10 minutes, so...

I never understood why everyone doesn't like this album (Hot space). He's so cool. Bright, even now it sounds very fresh and relevant. It's full of cool songs Back chat, Staying power, Put out the fire, Life is Real, Las Palabras, Under Pressure. I even love Body Language. She's very turned on. I always respect Freddie for the fact that he was not afraid to experiment in his work and covered so many genres.

Also the Pressure thing, Brian had some problems with the Bowie collab. Soul Brother was released as a b-side to Under Pressure. It didn't really gel between him and Bowie. Brian wrote an anti Bowie song after this called I Go Crazy.

Sweet, sweet song! Not the greatest Queen song by a long shot but love the sentiment. Can just imagine how upset Brian was by the Hot Space album and so nice that Freddie was encouraging him to hang in there. Love “he will rock you, rock you, rock you” and “saviour of the universe” lines.

It reminds .did a combo action of Motown & Freddie's My Melanchly Blues.. Freddie & John loved R&B, Brian & Roger preferred a more heavy rock style. Freddie & Brian both loved Jimi Hendrix, Brian for the guitar, Freddie for the showmanship& style.

Another real deep cut by Queen is a song called Dog With A Bone. It's an unreleased track from The Miracle sessions. A modified version of the this track was recorded to be played at the 1988 Queen Fan Club convention. thanks, Hap - this is the first time I've ever heard this... gotta say, though, IDK... I'm "on the fence" about if this is really good... Freddie's vocals are amazing, as usual; tune is .. well, okay -- but it reminds me a bit of the made-up songs I do for my Mom & siblings on their birthdays... a bit silly and referencing past experiences... I do like your reaction, though... I'm sure Brian appreciated it, but I also wonder if maybe he rolled his eyes and said to himself -- "Fred, you needn't have - I wasn't going to leave the band anyway" lol

About Hot Space - I read that "Back Chat" was John's kick at Brian and to ease tensions Freddie wrote "Soul Brother." No matter which version is true, Freddie remains the diplomat btwn friends. [If you give Back Chat a listen, you can see why this music & its energy spoke to Freddie.]
