The bungalows that are shown in this film were put up in the 1950’s as quick housing after WW2. Furthermore, the idea behind them was that they would have a short shelf life and were only expected to last for approximately 10 years. So here we are 72 years later and the last of them are still standing. So, to be fair to the residents there, you have picked on just one minute corner of Podsmead whereas you should have started from the junction of Podsmead Road and Tuffley Avenue to put out the true picture.

It's hard to cover the whole area, I want to try and show the most polarising parts in a short video. It's honestly astounding some of those properties are still standing, and more so the prices they're going for.

I used to live on the first street that you showed (Tennyson Avenue) it was an absolute shithole, so glad I moved almost 2 years ago. The houses were poor and during the winter it was freezing, and I didn’t even live in one of the bungalows!

Podsmead raised! You've missed atleat two thirds of the area off here !! But tbh the sense of community was immense here, everyone knew everyone and would lend a hand. Kids played until lamps came on , parents would have street parties and get togethers and the houses in the cul de sacs were smart clean and well looked after. Sledding down the hill at the end of mansell close/Milton AVE ....army cadets for kids to do, and playing wembley and curvy and cricket in the street. The pop man who used to come around ....walking up the hills berry picking Honestly podsmead was a great place to live

I grew up in a very similar area to Podsmead, Ben, and I have fond memories of the culture, atmosphere, and so on as well, it's awesome to hear you had a good experience. There are many worse areas in Gloucestershire for crime and anti-social behaviour, and I've covered some of them.

I totally agree with you on this. I moved to Mansell Close in 1991 at 6 years old and moved out in 2001 at 16. We are one of the original families to move there. Our house was still being built when we first went to see it. It still smelled of fresh paint throughout and some other plots were still in the final stages of construction when we moved in. Having moved there so young, there were a lot of other children around the same age that I grew up with. We played football in the street, using the wall at one end of the cul-de-sac, and the speed hump the other end as the goals. We played Kirby with basketballs for hours. We climbed the trees down by what we nick-named "The Swamp". We played pool in the Ramblers. Then there was the "tuc truck" or "pop man" would arrive in a large truck. The side would open up like a pop up shop and we'd all stare in in awe at the range of panda pops, chocolates, sweets, crisps (including Hedgehog flavour) and the goody bags containing sweets, colouring books and little toys. He even sold a range of those large pictures with 4 felt tip pens where all the black is felt and you'd colour in between. Podsmead was a great place to grow up back in the 90s. Even though I moved away I still occasionally pop in to reminisce, and weirdly, it still feels like home after all these years.

As an ex Gloucester Cover postie I did many rounds and saw the good and the (very) bad. As a concentrated piece of 'ShitHolery' it was hard to beat Matson and White City. The only time you got any respect was when they were waiting at the gate for their dole cheques. The round that included the council flats off Innsworth Drive/Cheltenham road East is another crap hole and female posties were not allowed to do it.
@ukexplored

Yeah I hear you. I bet you’ve seen and hear some things as a postie - I did a paper round as a kid in Podsmead and got mugged and had my paper bag stolen. It bought back some memories going there! 😀

There are some lovely people in Podsmead, yes, I have a friend who lives there. He likes my video, too; it’s not a knock on anyone or the area, statistically it’s the most deprived area in Gloucester, I showed the stats. Not talking about it or pretending it’s not struggling isn’t going to get the area noticed. I don’t live in Milton Keynes. Although, if I did I probably wouldn’t say 😂

The small bungalows that "look like they came flat packed [from Ikea]" in fact came flat-packed from Brockworth, they were fabricated at the Gloster Aircraft Company after the second world war. They were sent all over the country but Gloucester, being local, has an above average concentration of these dwellings. These prefabs as they are called were never expected to last this long but a lot of the people who live in them really like them. In that regard they are something of a success story.

I lived in one for a few years in brockworth that had been bricked up on the outside. Very spacious inside with a big garden too. Actually really liked it. Only moved because I had a mortgage arranged elsewhere in Gloucester otherwise I'd still be there now.

I live in Gloucester, it's very hard to do without a car. The local public transport is sadly lacking, it's impossible to get from one suburb of the city to another without going via the city centre and, due to the shape of the city, this is highly inefficient time-wise. I personally do walk most places but it's not easy, particularly due to jobs - I've worked in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury more than in Gloucester and when I have worked in Gloucester it took me 2 hours to get to work by public transport.

I can't tell from your comment what your stance is exactly; I like the Right to Buy scheme, it's fine in principle, but like everything, it's the people that ruined it. You can only present people with the right opportunities, right, you can't make them do the right thing.
