Brought back memories from years ago of people I knew who raised birds on micro farms. I remember being told that chickens usually perched facing outward from a solid wall because that made them feel secure. Also, perches indicated the status in the flock, chickens that perched on the top rungs were alpha, while the lower ranking birds were confined to bottom perches, except when it got really cold then all the birds got really chummy with each other. One humble suggestion. If the chicken coop is positioned in an open field, it might be an idea to rig up a sort of lightning rod, especially with thunderstorm season starting up in about a month. Having lived my life in the Midwest and Western U.S., I know lighting can be really nasty. I've heard stories of farmers losing a number of their animals when lightning hit one of their out buildings.
@eileenjurek68985 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing about a lightning rod. Better safe than sorry. I 😊

For your coup, put some plywood down, cover with some cheap ,floor vinyl and absorbent pine shavings, will keep your coup clean and much warmer, plus the ducks will like the floor surface and nest down in the shavings. Add new shavings under the roosts every once in a while and clean it out once a month or so.

Oh those muskovy! I have had over 30 of them at a time. I am down to 3 right now since moving to southern Missouri. If they dont have an overhead net to contain them they will fly. Its in their nature to roost in the trees. One other thing...being a transplant from northern Wisconsin, their feet cannot get cold. If their feet get too cold they will die. They arent like pekins and khakis who have a natural "antifreeze" in their feet and can take cold. This is our theory over several years of raising them...if they freeze and then warm up its like the blood that clotted or froze breaks free and kills them. I have had it happen too many times before we learned they must have a house or if they are outside straw, hay or leaves to bed down in. Pekins and other ducks do quite well in the cold. I just want to say i adore your family and and coming from a fellow bird lover I love all the different breeds of birds you raise! Many blessings!!😊

I grew up on a farm of 40 acres in Oregon. That’s the coolest chicken coup I’ve ever seen! It’s so contemporary!! Curious how long do those lights stay on after the chickens go in at night? Do they turn on by themselves and then turn off all due to the solar panels? Also, does the solar panels heat up the coup & if so how? It’s really awesome & seriously the coolest coup I’ve EVER SEEN & just love how you set it up!! Not to mention the CLEANEST!! I’ve NEVVVVVER KNOWN ANYONE that cleaned their chicken coup! NEVER!! Nor moved it around & that goes for all the animals! I really love your channel !! Reminds me of when I was a kid & now I live in VEGAS living a life that is VERRRY FAR from the one I grew up in ! Your boys are going to have the greatest memories to look back on and the life they are living is going to have a HUGE impression on the type of adults they turnout being! It’s a GREAT THING!! I have kept my morals and made good decisions in my life bc of how I was raised and let me tell you living in Vegas, and moving here when I was 18, I’m sure has kept me out of jail & ALIVE!!

Fantastic Chicken Coop and great channel - you had me hooked when I saw the Emu hatching video. But I had one question on the weather vane ? Should it be grounded - what with all the metal on the roof and your expensive solar set up. I know this time of year lightening isn't really an issue - but maybe should think of it before spring comes?

@marshasmith63205 жыл бұрын

@deniceeverhart74735 жыл бұрын
I would definitely add a layer of straw or hay on top of the metal floor at least during the winter. It has been pretty cold at night in the Kansas City area. It also will help keep the chickens from hurting their feet when the hop down from the roosts.
@cmccullough87085 жыл бұрын
Definitely do pine not cedar and don’t do straw because mites love to live in it and you can get a cat pooper scooper and scoop the chicken poop out of the fine pine shavings
@deniceeverhart74735 жыл бұрын
@@mmouse8627 that coop is very well thought out except not covering the floor with bedding. I personally house my ducks separate from my chickens at night with a 2 1/2 gallon heated bucket of water available to them at all times since ducks don't sleep all night like chickens and need 24/7 access to water. Hopefully he will realize bedding on the floor will make the birds a lot more comfortable and their feet healthier.

We had guineas for a bit. Raised them from chicks with some other chicks we had. We let them free range in our yard and they stayed on our property. Did really well hanging out with the birds they were raised with. Had to get rid of them because the noise was too much, especially since they were noisy all night long and keeping us up. I've heard they will do well staying with your chickens if you raise them up with the chickens.

Love the coop design but the metal floor seems cold and VERY drafty! I noticed the 'reluctant duck' glanced sideways at the metal grating as it entered. Wet webbed feet must stick to the metal grating like 'sticking your tongue on a frozen pipe'. Also, do the ducks ever freeze their wet feathers to the plywood overnight? I always feel deep empathy for animals who need to survive the cold. Probably comes from licing thru 60+ Maine winters.Would love to see a bale of hay on the coop floor, it would actually make me feel warm.

The cupola looks awesome! Great 'added touch.' The guineas would probably do their best work - eating ticks - if they free ranged. (Though watch Jason's (@Start From Seed Homestead) videos about his guineas. Those things seem to have a built in knack for getting killed. 🤔)
@whitehouseonthehill5 жыл бұрын
Rick Mitchell - yep, everyone that I've seen that free ranges them, loses them fairly quickly. I want the ticks killed, but if our guineas are gone, they can't help much. Gotta figure out a solution that keeps them alive to do their thing.
