Hey guys! Your videos are super helpful! For school I have to interview someone who has the same career I would like to pursue. I home school so I don't know anybody who wants to be a small scale poultry and exotic poultry breeder. If you could answer these questions, that would help a lot! -When did you decide to raise poultry? -What inspired you to do so? -What do you enjoy most about it? -What do you find the most challenging about it? -Do you think raising poultry the way you do allows for a good balance in your life? -What is one thing you wish you knew about raising poultry before you got them? -Have you ever regretted choosing this career path? -Do you plan on continuing on this path for years to come? Thank you for your time!

I truly hope you get your answers... Great Questions, btw! Good luck with your students!!!

This guy is a horrible farmer. He clearly has family money. I've watched alot of his stuff and he fails at everything. I recommend finding a different mentor. There are tons of homestead farms that don't fail and use vehicles and pay ridiculous costs. Just my advise. I've only had chickens and mini goats but I know an idiot

I just saw that your farm is in Easton, Mo. I lived in St. Joseph for about 8 years, my son was born there, then bought a wonderful house in Gower, a large house that had been a doctor’s house built in 1912, I loved that house. The marriage didn’t make it. I have lived in Leavenworth, Kansas for 27 years. So fun to know you are a neighbor of my former stomping grounds❤️❤️❤️. I just discovered your farm on KZbin a few days ago and I am especially enjoy all your birds. I spent many many childhood summers with my grandmother in the Ozarks and know all about raising your own food. My kids only have a clue from videos🤣🤣.

have you guys thought about putting a saltwater bottle into the water buckets? I've done this for many years for the feral colony that lives near me, and had to do this for my indoor cats last year when we got that nasty winter storm. All you need to do is super-saturate the water in the bottle with salt and place it into the water dishes. The water closest to the bottle will not freeze nearly as quickly or even at all in some cases.

I'd settle for 10% of their strength & energy. Fibromyalgia & cold DO NOT mix at all. I keep my apartment so warm in winter that sometimes I wonder if my upstairs neighbor has much of an electric bill from heating. Luckily I invested in a radiant oil filled heater & that keeps it a nice even temperature. So can keep it cooler now. Doesn't stop having to fight with my cat over who gets to sit closest to the heater. I've literally caught that cat cuddling the base/wheels of it before.
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery2 жыл бұрын
What about putting a little thicker lining of hay in the bottom of the nesting box? Also, there could be a heating pad in the bottom of the box too. Not to heat the eggs but just to keep the temperature high enough so that the eggs can go through the night without freezing. Could be solar powered too which, if done properly could make it virtually maintenance free.

Blaze is looking so stunning. Cool that the mandarin ducks are laying eggs. Too bad that some were frozen. Stay warm.
@dragons969019953 жыл бұрын
I wonder, if you were to put a seedling heat mat under the straw in the nest box, would it keep it warm enough to prevent the eggs from freezing. It seems to be a pattern with the mandarins, so even if you can heat it just for the 30 days or so when they start laying, aren't ready to sit, but it's to cold for the eggs, it may prevent freezing eggs
@whitehouseonthehill3 жыл бұрын
No, they would have to be surrounded by warmth to keep from cracking. When the hens are ready, they stay on the eggs. It's just too cold out right now, they shouldn't be laying yet.

Is it worth putting a few bales of straw in the mandarin's coop to keep it warmer, or put in some compost and cover it with straw and woodchips? Might keep eggs warm for longer and increase the chances of them surviving long enough for you to collect?
@lauriegentry77643 жыл бұрын
You’re right. The hay bales would insulate quite a bit.

Hi all, I had a thought when you were talking about the mandarins eggs freezing and I am sure I am not the only one. Is there a way to heat the box, heating mat? The only thing I know about birds is what I have learned from your channel. I know there are seed starting mats so seems like there might be egg box heating mat. I sure hope some of the eggs hatch out. I enjoy your Channel and your family.

I was wondering if you had thought of using a flat reptile heating pad at the bottom of some of your birds' nests? This could help with keeping eggs warm during the frigid months, so you could have less worry about them freezing (some heating pads have a built-in thermostat).

Dang those birds are practically living outdoors with plastic sides and no lights to create heat. Seems they are not designed to live wtihoiut some better protection. Surprised not found frozen dead. Did you see the Mandarins and white chickens fighting pecking at the feathers of the white. Is it beacause they are nesting now and do not want them around? Big job you got on your hands. But a remarkable place and kids working with you is great way to grow up.
