This is why Merphy shot up to become one of my favorite One Piece KZbinrs. I love how she looks at the writing and narrative in ways only she can. If you see this Merphy, know we’re elated to have you in the community. I’ve followed the series for 17 years and every video you do gets me to look at my favorite series in a new way. @@merphynapier42 That's a MASSIVE asset. EDIT: I ended up writing a massive rant, so I apologize in advance People in the manga community are used to analyzing everything as manga, forgetting it's a story first and foremost. They grew up with Dragonball, that you are reading now, and a bunch of cookie-cutters that tried to copy it, so their lens got stunted, so to speak. The narrative in One Piece is way more akin to that of a novel, than to the medium and demographic it's in (shonen manga), imo, and most manga reviewers (not all of them, of course) have only ever read shonen manga, not even comics from other countries, and are extremely used to, and sometimes only capable of seeing, the one style of story-telling. And of course, there are a gazillion styles within manga itself, as in any other medium, but many tropes (narrative and stylistic) are very much cultural and/or based on the target audience, and Oda sure uses many manga stylistic tropes, but he also incorporates a bunch of resources from tons of different mediums, cultural backgrounds, and styles. Actually, coming to think of it, you pointed one out the first time you read Thriller Bark, the pacing of the narrative doesn't fit shonen manga, but it's closer to a Gothic spooky novel; that slow unnerving set-up to the big sonorous end. And I have an even better example, Fishman Island. Called bad and weak by many, because the fights were a cakewalk, and Hody is "a bad antagonist" because he was not a threat to the Strawhats, while missing the entirety of the actual conflict and absolutely everything that wasn't happening at surface level, because in the sort of fanmade "sub-genre" known as battle shonen (which One Piece doesn't belong to, the story is not about the fights, the fights are just a narrative tool, but many people cannot understand that) if the fight is not bombastic and showcases a power-up, the whole thing is bad (and that's the same reason that to this day there are people complaining about the fight between Luffy and Katakuri)

Such great story telling! This chapter is essentially a one-shot manga. The first page is the whole chapter. The themes/ideologies/character-traits of Garp and Koby are clearly laid out from the beginning and are executed later in the chapter. Both succeed in their missions (Koby = save others; Garp = save the future). Garp’s mission as the elder/mentor is a more wise/thematic take of Koby’s mission. All the parallels. I would love to see someone’s reaction to this chapter who has never read One Piece and get their thoughts because everything one needs to know about these characters are encapsulated in just one chapter. Merphy, I believe that Garp capture is such a good set up for multiple stories beat now. 1. It give Luffy legit reason to fight Blackbeard 2. A rematch and a chance for Luffy to save another family who might die by the hand Black Beard. And this time the Strawhat is there and they are not going anywhere 3. Sword might ignore the goverment and join force with the Strawhat. This will be a repeat of the Godvalley incident where marine and pirate collide 4. A repeat of marine force abd this time Garp might accept Luffy for what he is. Potential more character development between Garp and Luffy 5. Dragon might involve 6. Garp is the best character to replace all these repeat better than Sabo, due to how emotionally involves we are to him Overall, this is a great set up chapter. 10/10. Oda the goat

Really good video. To add something, I think that Helmeppo deserves a recognition. That guy started as a runt almost as bad as Stelly or any noble in Goa, almost killed Zoro for a complete stupid reason and was extremely weak while crying "Daddyyyyyyyy". Now he is a Rokushiki user, he has an Usopp-like cowardice that doesn't stop him to do right by the mission and fulfill his role. He stayed with Garp, Grus and Koby against all the pirates on Beehive, and then fought alone to stop all the people in the arm so Koby and Grus could complete their task. I like to see how this runt has genuinely grow into a good and respectable marine, because it shows that Garp not only can make the good and willingly Koby into a better version of himself, but he was also able to help a runt with only specks of a good man behind to become what he is today.

It almost a relief that Koby has finally stepped up to the plate. For the longest time (since Marineford), he felt like he had not changed much as a character and I was waiting for the moment when he finally got his due. And when Oda focuses on character, it’s some of the best. Garp, Kuzan and Koby all got amazing development in these past few chapters. Koby’s display of power is not only fitting but necessary. He is part of the next generation after all. Edit: Garp’s line “You mean scratches?” was the rawest thing I’ve read in a LONG time. Gave me mega chills.

I really love that when Koby's immediate reaction is to doubt the plan, Garp's reaction is to remind them that you have to be able to take decisive action. That one line says so much. You just know Garp has been thrust into uncertain situations countless times in his life. Especially in a world of devil fruits, and the unpredictability of the Grand Line in general, it is impossible to be prepared for every scenario that can come up. He really flexed his experience in that moment. His knowledge of the capabilities of men; to the extent that he believed in the strength of Koby, who didn't even know his own strength, his ability to remain calm in the face of impending doom. Just perfect.

Oda’s slowly turning Merphy into a weekly chapter reviewer. 😂 You can also say that Kuzan followed Garp’s teachings too. Assuming he’s still a double agent of sorts he sacrificed the old man to save himself (and so that he doesn’t blow his cover) and the ship of full of younger people. Either way, it was nice of him to freeze Garp’s wound though. Can’t wait for Blackbeard to go to Buggy to turn Garp’s bounty in only for Buggy to not have 3 billion beri’s to pay him. He just never expected someone to be able to turn in a bounty that high. I expect Garp will die sometime, just not before Luffy/Dragon get to see him again. There’s a theory that Blackbeard will use Pudding’s power to look at Garp’s memories of the God Valley incident. That’d be pretty cool. After all this hype I’d almost forgotten about the Egghead Arc, the place where all our main characters are. 😂

The more i re-read this chapter the less I see marineford. And the more I see the lord of the coast scene. It is about giving up something for the future. And making that bet. Shanks bet an arm on Luffy. Garp, bet his life on Koby. And while his own beliefs on saving old people may undervalue his sacrifice. Its measure will be set by Koby's actions. And while yes it was Marineford. It was so much more than that.

If I'm remembering right when Luffy and co first fought Kuzan Chopper said that if Robin's heart froze she was done for, so they had to quickly warm her back up to keep her alive. While I agree there are probably more advantages to keeping Garp alive for the BB pirates maybe they had no choice since Garp broke out of Kuzan's ice before. A lot of people have theorized that they would try to get his bounty from the Cross Guild and we know they don't care if the bounties are dead or alive.

"Does he have some sort of advanced armament captains super hero haki? I don't know, I don't really care, this was a really cool panel!" Perfect mentality to enjoy One Piece with! The moment you start arguing about semantics you quickly lose sight of the awesome thing that just happened. EVERYONE WAS SO COOL!! THEY ALL HAVE SUPER HERO HAKI IN MY BOOK!!

Garp has a top-tier Cross Guild bounty. I’m sure Blackbeard will want to capitalize on that.

There's a quote that I really feel applies to Koby in and after this chapter: "Speak softly, and carry a big stick; you will go far." Theodore, "The Bull Moose," D. Roosevelt, former fleet admiral, probably.

I like to think that Blackbeard does with Garp what the goverment did with Ace, public execution style, for the benefit of his grand plan which he certainly has. Imagine the institution that is the Marines abandon Garp, unlike Whitebeard did for his captured son, but a certain Pirate makes his moves to save him.

There is definitely more to Garp's capture. Blackbeard will still push his agenda to make Hachinosu an official kingdom. Garp is a much valuable bargaining chip so...

Considering that Garp has probably been captured, I feel like Oda is going to have Garp's fate mirror Ace's. It's kinda the same situation right now, both have been captured by Blackbeard (or his crew) and the Marines are probably going to try to save Garp instead of bargaining with one of their arch enemies. I'm so excited for the next chapters.

I have a major theory involving coby being the ACTUAL biological son of whitebeard Think about this coby was introduced in the first episode But we've never heard any notions of his parents an yet coby was raised by essentially garp after making it in the marines due to luffys actions Now look garp raised ace He raised Luffy and Sabo Who ALL CHOSE to become pirates By their own will An 1 with especially shanks influence But coby always wanted to be a marine Yet garp raised him as well "I HAVE NO SYMPATHY for criminals but family is a whole different story" So WHO was the first yonko Introduced in the story It wasn't shanks because he was not a yonko when he met luffy The first official yonko we met Was Whitebeard An if you look at teenage coby AK the new "Hero" Look at his forehead scar an how He particularly covers it an uncovers it Then look at Whitebeards chest Their scars Resemble ONE ANOTHER Take in fact garp Became the hero by beating rocks alongside Roger Coby became the new "HERO" due to beating a former Rocks member and Received his forehead scar From th feat of whang zhi WHITEBEARD was once apart of ROCKS And got his chest scar from xebec Himself Whitebeard was killed by blackbeard Coby is kidnapped by blackbeard An garp.is waiting no effort going to Save coby "I HAVE no sympathy for criminals but family on the other hand that's a different story" GARP LOOKS AT COBY AS FAMILY WHITEBEARDS DREAM was. A Family How ironic is it garp RAISED THE SONS Of ROGER DRAGON WHITEBEARD (Cobys biological father) Now obviously coby inherited his hair color from his mother so Whitebeard Never slept with bakkin go look at cobys Hair an that's the same hair color of the woman that Whitebeard procreated with

I haven’t seen anyone talking about this but the marines could leverage Garp’s situation to their advantage. They could set a trap for both Dragon and Luffy.

I feel like Garp can't be dead yet without seeing Luffy at least one more time. The two literally haven't seen each since prior to Ace's death and it'd be weird for Luffy to just hear about Garp's death long after it happened.

Thank you so much. I was waiting for your review because you emphasize the emotional aspects of the chapter a little more. Also with Garp, there is a theory Kuzan might have inserted the ice spike in the same place Shiryu stabbed him previous chapter. 😊

It looks to me like it’s ryuo that Koby is using. It has the typical trappings of “not making contact with the opponent but destroying from inside”, since I don’t think Koby actually physically touched the palm. It’d be an advanced armament, not coc, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Koby does have it.

*also. If Egghead was resolved offscreen, I'd hate that, but it'd be a hilarious inversion of what we usually see, where everywhere else, stuff happens offscreen while we're focusing on the Strawhats.

Kuzan knew that Garp's planing on giving himself for Kobi. We saw him when Garp tells the story about leaving the old man behind. Plus the language used by Kuzan indicates that he respects Garp That's why Kuzan said "I can't let you leave" to Garp even though his mission should be secure Koby as a hostage

I agree, I don't think Garp is dead here. Knowing Oda just from reading One Piece, he is going to have, close to the impact Whitebeard and Roger's deaths had. If the full Blackbeard crew was on the island I could see him being killed off here.

I don't think Kuzan has a plan at all. I think he is someone on a search, a search for himself specifically. Ohara and his loss to Sakazuki (magma guy) made him falter and lose his way (as garp said) and he joined Blackbeard because he wanted to see the other side. Blackbeard told him he was free to do as he pleases and also provided Kuzan with cover, that give him a certain freedom (as Pizarro said, Blackbeard overshadows his crew). But he ultimately ended up in the same place as he did with the marines, icing a dear friend (garp/saul) who was protecting the younger generation (Koby/Robin) from oppressive forces (Blackbeard/World Government). Pirate Island is mirroring Ohara.

This color spread is one of my favorites. And I love that you can tell that it’s not only the East Blue 5 but the East Blue 5 from Arlong Park. Maybe ever. This did not feel like a death for Garp. It felt like the setup for another Luffy rescue mission. But I'm going to predict this rescue will be successful because the rest of the Straw Hats will be there. And he won't be fighting against other Marines as we say in this chapter, they’re reticent to go against a Yonko.

If you like the team fight aspect of stuff like this and Thriller Bark, I would personally like to suggest Black Clover to you. Teamwork is one of BC’s strong suits; it has a huge emphasis on characters combining their strengths and abilities to take down threats bigger than themselves and it lends itself extremely well to collaborative character development. I personally think the series has a lot more to offer than people say if you give it the time of day and pay it more narrative attention than most people do (which I know won’t be an issue for you) so I would love to see you give it a fair chance someday!

It’s so cool how Shanks bet his arm on the future Pirate King. I wonder if Garp is betting his life on the new generation of the Navy. Admirals Koby, Helmeppo, and Grus, all discipled by Garp to represent a new guard of justice: Honorable Justice, Reserved Justice, and (potentially, Grus’s good form of) Justice. Perhaps even freed from the oppressive rule of the celestial dragons, and led by Blind Justice, himself, Fleet Admiral Fujitora, they will work to see the liberated world kept safe from the evil chaotic or oppressive forces that pop up from time to time, allowing pirates to follow Luffy’s example and be completely free!

It's a (potentially) small thing but I enjoyed the Koby-Helmeppo moment, since they've been training together since before entering the Grand Line. It was just really happy and fun to see because Helmeppo knew how much work Koby was putting in.

A lot of people drew parallels between Avalo crushing the battleship with Sakazuki blowing up the refugees in Ohara, and I do not believe that was unfounded. However, it does convince me that, while Kuzan might not be fully loyal to Blackbeard, he is not a good guy or has any interest in working with the Marines or Sword. This is the second time a ship full of civilians is being attacked right in front of him, and while he protested the first time, he didn't even look this time.
