You guys mentioned how good of a singer she is. She used to jump around while singing. Like from the massive speakers and different parts of the stage and would not miss a beat, no change in her breathing...nothing!! She used to sing while running on the treadmill to improve her stamina and keep her breathing strong while she sings. She was truly dedicated to her craft.

It's all about Tony, her bass player. Amazing how she was able to keep it together and maintain the band while she was carrying around such a heartache. @@NYC_Goody "Tragic Kingdom" was their 2nd album I believe and it is considered their "Breakout" album. The follow up called "Return of Saturn" was pretty good and the one after that "Rock Steady" also had a couple hits. Some of the songs I recommend checking out besides "Don't Speak" are "Spiderwebs", "Just A Girl", "Simple Kind of Life", "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", "Underneath It All", and "It's My Life" Another album in a similar vein to "Tragic Kingdom" is the album "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac. Each member of the band was going through their own stuff and it's all in that album! Two of the band members were married and were in the middle of a divorce while the album was being recorded, two more of the band members were dating each other and were in the midst of their own breakup, and the 5th member of the band was also going through his own divorce all while this album was being written and recorded!

To make things worse, the song was originally written to be a love song. The words "don't speak" were about how they didn't even have to say how much they loved each other.

The studio video that went with "Don't Speak" is great, because it has parallel dramas: Gwen's ending relationship with the guy in the band, and also how she (from a media perspective) dominated the band, although musically they were balanced. But if a babe like Gwen is the frontwoman, no matter how good a guitarist you are, you get to go stand in the back! Gwen and the band were all great, tight, live performers. You should react to "Just a Girl" live from the MTV beach party. Super high energy.

One of the reasons she's putting so much emotion into the song is that she and the bassist, Tony Kanal, had actually broken up after a long relationship, and on top of that this video did indeed come out at a time when the band was dealing with a lot of tension because the media focused on Gwen over the other members. No Doubt ended up breaking up in 2003 and the members went off to do solo projects, only getting back together briefly in 2012 for another album and then splitting again.

Thank you for sharing this. I scrolled the comments before I wrote that all out.. and was grateful you beat me to it! Also.... Gwen stated in an interview when this first came out.. how badly she felt. She really truly didn't want to be centered out and didn't like how the media and the entertainment industry was trying to make her the main focus and the star of the band. That it made her embarrassed, and felt very uncomfortable. I remember thinking wow.. I see why this was happening.. because she was and is a star.. but also I felt for Gwen. She was so kind going to bat for the band.. and did her best to downplay her role.. so the band members could shine in the interview.

Return to Saturn is also a great album, but it started to get even more away from Ska. Ex-girlfriend is my favorite from that album. I miss No Doubt. "I'm Just A Girl" is definitely worth checking out too. In Australia We've had some pretty Amazing Female Artists. But prior to KZbin etc. they don't seem to be very well known in Other Countries. In the 90's there was Batchelor Girl a duo with lead singer Tania Doko. They had some terrific songs such as "Buses And Trains" and "Treat Me Good". I think you'd Love "Permission To Shine" I dare you not to be Uplifted listening to it. But by far their best has to be "Lucky Me" an Iconic Sarcastic song full of Aussie Humour that incredibly Catchy. I recall an episode of Musical Quiz Show which featured both Local and International Rock Stars. An American Artist was on that episode with Tania Doko, She sang "Lucky Me ". He was Blown Away and said "Why Haven't I Heard This Song Before?" But our Legendary 60's Pocket Rocket is Judith Durham from The Seekers To Get Ahead they moved to England. "Georgy Girl" is pretty well known around the world. But "A World Of Our Own", "I'll Never Find Another You" and "Morningtown Ride" (which one of My Sisters used as a Lullaby) are pretty great too. In the 90's they regrouped and had one of their Biggest Hits and Unofficial Aussie Anthem "We Are Australian". It sums up how Modern Aussies Treat People, We're generally an Open Friendly People who'll say "Hello!" and talk to Anyone. As Oprah said when She visited Australia "What, Did Everyone Go To Nice School?" Unlike America We don't Label People based on there heritage like African American etc. We're all Just Australians and we like to adopt Honorary Australians as well. Check out the video for "We Are Australian". Judith's voice is so strong Her 3 male band mates had to carefully balance Her vocals out. If She'd wanted to She could have drowned them out. She's a Small Woman with an Incredibly Powerful Voice.

This song is definitely based in reality. Gwen Stefani dated guitarist/bandmate Tony Kanal for 7 years, from 1987-1994 (he is the band-member with the darker skin, and he is British - American). The album “Tragic Kingdom” that this song is from was released in 1995, the year after Gwen and Tony’s break up. Gwen and her brother Eric Stefani, who was a former No Doubt member, wrote the song originally as a love song. The song went through several rewrites and new versions. Gwen modified it into a breakup song about her bandmate and ex-boyfriend Tony Kanal, shortly after he ended their seven-year relationship. Luckily they got past the break up and continued to perform and later collaborate together on some of Gwen‘s solo material, when she decided to go out on her own. ☮️ Steve in Dallas

Then they thought the name was too cheesy, but they already spent $50 of their high school money on stickers, and other promotions with the name, so they decided to keep it, $50 was a lot of money for them back then. From google: This song is about the relationship lead singer Gwen Stefani had with bassist Tony Kanal for seven years. She's saying that what they had was real, and it's a pity it couldn't last - don't bother explaining because it hurts. It didn't work out between Stefani and Kanal, but she didn't give up on musicians. She married Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale in 2002; when they split in 2015, she took up with country star Blake Shelton, her co-star on the singing competition The Voice. >>

This video was actually very much true to life with what the band was going through at the time. Gwen had recently ended her romantic relationship with guitarist Tony Kanal and it was I’m sure difficult to navigate those dynamics. Additionally, like in the video storyline, Gwen was receiving A LOT of attention, both for her beauty and style, as well as her voice. Publicity was very focused on HER, and the rest of the band had growing resentment towards that. There was a lot of love between this band, but the unequal attention made for some very real bad feelings….

The song was originally written as a love song but after Gwen broke up dating the bass player in the band she re-wrote the lyrics to fit how she was feeling after the breakup. The theme shown in the video was showing how the media was concentrating on Gwen during promotion and ignoring the rest of the band. That was an actual problem in the band and causing tensions.

Gwen is still the definitive millennium pop-punk queen to me, IDGAF. I often wish she’d go back to her musical roots. So many bangers across their entire career, but I’d recommend “Trapped In a Box” for the youngest Gwen you’ve ever seen and a taste of their California ska roots, “Excuse Me Mr.” for strong feminine punk rocker Gwen, or “Hella Good” for one of their absolute best and most iconic radio pop-rock songs. For a band that didn’t fall into the whole ‘90s grunge bandwagon, and were therefore kind of overlooked by the media, No Doubt still did FAR better for themselves than nearly any other pop-punk group of their time. And Gwen’s instantly-recognizable voice definitely helped cement her place in pop culture, even before she “sold out” and went full-time pop star. One of my formative bands, and a forever favorite.

I personally do not feel they've gotten enough credit and recognition for their amazing contribution to music! They were on the charts for a long time!!! I hate to think she "sold out", but rather she was trying to do more crossover music to get more recognition. I know it sucks when artists do that, it sometimes pisses off their fan base. But I think they are pressured behind the scenes to make these crossover moves, even if it sometimes may be unpopular.

Used to be my fave band!! My one and only tattoo has a reference to their “tragic kingdom” album which this song is from and the iconic rotting orange. This one song is the one that is very different from the rest of the record which is insanely upbeat with ska/reggae/punk influences wrapped up in this sunshine-y, California pop album. “Just a girl,” “spiderwebs,” “the climb,” “sixteen,” and the whole album is so good. This was their breakout record and it was their 3rd album so I suggest listening to their first two as well, haha. I think my favorite song by them though (it changes haha) is “bath water” from the “return of Saturn” album. So fun and different!! They no longer play together :((( and this song is about her ex boyfriend who is also a band mate, Tony. He is the bass player. They dated a long time but he broke up with her and half of this record is about him, haha but he was fine with that. Loving her new "Let Me Reintroduce Myself!" Always loved Simple Kind Of Life, Just, a Girl, What are You Waiting For, and Oi to the World! is permanent on my holiday list. Gwen is a great storyteller, full of emotion, energy, and classy sassiness!

She wrote the songs too, all personal for her. I adore her. This song was also the song that made them famous. Love the band! ❤️

The entire band collaborated on the songwriting. Gwen mostly wrote the lyrics as she didn't play an instument. For the first few albums she wrote many songs with her brother and founder of No Doubt Eric Stefani. Eric left the band to work on "The Simpsons" as an animator. He continued to collaborate with No Doubt after leaving and even contributed to Gwen's solo recordings.

Lets not forget that No Doubt was not Gwenn alone. The whole band was amazing! you should definitely react to one of their live performances. But not another ballad... something more rocking or more SKA. Because they started as a SKA band and they kicked butt at it. She is definitely an amazing performer. But I feel that she lost all her "bite" once she went solo. She will never be as relevant as a solo artist as she was with No Doubt. Suggestions: I'm just a girl (live), Sunday Morning (live), Ex Girlfriend (live), New (live), Hey Baby (live) and of course SPIDERWEBS also live.

She had married Gavin Rossdale from British Band " Bush" and had children with him.....when they broke up, she met Blake Sheldon (he was going thru his own brake up with his wife) doing the show the Voice and after a while the two of them became an item.

Gwen & Eve "Let me blow your Mind" is off the charts. It's a shame y'all won't react to it. The video that goes with it really shows how 2 strong women with such powerful voices can compliment each other.

Gwen is awesome. Tragic Kingdom is such a great album. "I'm Just a Girl" was the first song I heard her sing because it was on the "Clueless" movie soundtrack back in the 90s. No Doubt was a garage band she started with her brother when she was a teen. The think I love about her most is that she's massively successful, but still completely down-to-earth. She and Blake are my favorite couple in music. The prove that opposites attract!

One of my favorite concerts in the 90s No Doubt opened for Bush and the Goo Goo Dolls at Red Rocks in Denver. Gwen Steffani absolutely stole the show! She was amazing!

I love "Tragic Kingdom". I think it's the climbing vocals and the sound of the band adding to it. It's like hitting the peak only to discover another mountain.

Great song, one of the things that caught my ear as a musician, most songs start acoustic and go into electric guitar for heavier parts, this song opens with electric and brings the acoustic to the front during the heavier choruses, and the solo is an acoustic as well, masterful reversal of the old formula. And Gwen's voice is spot on throughout the song.
