I used to be the bloke who played the last promo and late weather and possibly the safety film. Each bit would be on a different Cue on my Quadruplex 2 inch VTR. At the end of the final transmission, 'goodnight' spoken by the weatherman ( always a man ) I'd hit the fast rewind button and try and get the tape off the machine and the lights turned off in the cubical before the end of the National Anthem. Of such small things was my life replete...

That public information film at the end, imagine being a little kid and seeing that late at night, especially before TV went off the air. And, being American, as the station played God Save the Queen, I sung My Country Tis of Thee along to the music.

I was 9 years old when this was aired and remember that public service safety announcement about not leaving children at home and even back then at the time it seemed old and weird and of a world which didn't exist to me because I came from a very loving straight as a dye family who would never have left me on my own. So it just seemed like I said old and weird and for other people, not my family.
