An all AMD gaming laptop is definitely a nice thing to see, especially if you use Linux instead of Windows (Some Dell devices and the Steam Deck drivers don't ship with the essential control panel on Windows, and NVIDIA's Linux drivers have historically had problems). The one thing I definitely want to see from a gaming laptop though is a QD-OLED or OLED display, as from my time with the Alienware QD-OLED, the response times are absolutely nuts even at 144Hz and looks smoother than a good chunk of 240Hz LCDs I've seen (You don't even need Black Frame Insertion for low persistence). My iPhone feeling smooth at 120Hz is what sold me on OLED displays, and so far, haven't had burn-in with either of them. Of course, seeing a wider adoption of Thunderbolt or USB 4.0 would be nice, so laptops can use eGPUs and don't swiftly become eWaste after the GPU isn't fast enough to keep up anymore like a lot of budget laptops with 1650s and such. On a laptop, I think that 1080p is plenty. Same for 800p on the Steam Deck. If there's a good all-AMD laptop with all that, I think AMD will be a solid choice in terms of laptops. I've been needing to buy one for portable work usage (So I can swiftly go somewhere and get work done), and I don't think my desktop or Steam Deck (due to the GPU and immutable filesystem) fills that niche for me.

Agreed on all accounts...I have an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with an AMD 5900HS and an Nvidia RTX 3060...I mostly use Ubuntu on it because its easier on battery life (and I like GNOME, bite me). Unfortunately the Nvidia graphics don't integrate well with the device. I got this laptop a year ago and there weren't a whole lot of good all AMD options then. As long as I use the laptop with only the built in screen I don't have too many issues...but for the best game performance I have to boot into Windows. I would definitely be curious to try Ubuntu on my Steam Deck though. I haven't tested or researched it yet, but since the boot loader on the Deck is unlocked it should be easy to boot off an SD card (I hope). I just wonder if the drivers for the APU are integrated into any distributions yet.

It is a simple fact that thicker laptops are better at cooling & so opting for a thinner laptop is opting to throttle the power of the laptop for gaming.... why buy a laptop specifically for gaming that sucks at it because it overheats? If people want to carry around an ultra light weight & thin computer, without worrying about high end gaming, then get a tablet! If you want a GAMING laptop you want GREAT cooling. And 1080p in 2022 Q3? Really? The hardware coming out before the end of the year will be pushing gaming to 8K, so anything less than 4K potential is outdated - I have a laptop that's 14 years old that has a 1080p resolution!

3 seconds into video, take a few steps back out of the door. Silent nod. Never disturb a man making out with a piece of hardware. Closed door.

I hope that AMD adds speaker quality and verification to the advantage certification. My phone speakers sounds better then that laptop.

Do remember that the laptops audio is getting crushed down by his recording software, then youtube compression, and finally maybe even your own audio. It's typically safe to assume that things sound significantly better in person than through youtube.

@@Dwivil that’s true, but it clearly didn’t sound good. I don’t want passable speakers, I want good speakers.

The review is great! I just feel that calling this pairing balanced is a bit misleading. In most of the games displayed it appears that you are in a GPU bottle neck; as evidenced by the significantly lower CPU usage while the GPU is often maxed out (97%+). Would also love it if MSI would provide a middle ground refresh rate (say 144hz) with a higher resolution package (1440p) as the constraint that such a resolution places is often neglible when compared with the gains that you would get in non-competitive titles that have no problem reaching 240+ FPS on older hardware. With that being said, the review was good and I hope others can see the same problems that I see. Thanks, Greg!

Pushing higher frames will always use more GPU resources, especially if uncapped. No matter the resolution.

Great review Greg. Wow MSI got put into line by AMD 🤣😅😂 as MSI were guilty of putting crappy 72% ntsc low nit panel with higher end Ryzen chips in the past and charging 90-95% of an Intel build ruining the Ryzen experience for many 😢. I feel the AMD Advantage program is a great initiative by AMD to weed out the sub-par laptops being slapped together by many guilty manufacturers. Intel did this with its Centrino and Ultrabook monikers and it did yield some impressive builds 👍😇. Ryzen has definitely given Intel a need to now look at their battery efficiency etc as they’ve traded exceptional performance for lack of decent battery life….. I remember Intel and amd being the other way around 😋😛
