This is how I do it … The pen spring shock "semi droop" setup

A short video to explain how I make what I call the "semi droop" setup.
Personally I find stock rigs often too high and with too much flex.
This is a cheap mod, you just need old pens where you'll find the 4 springs. In the video I use a thicker oil but you can as well use the original one.
The principle can be applied on many scale rigs independently of the brand.
Enjoy and feel free to leave feedback

Hi, thanks @fullspeeddesign for sharing this Mod. I reconstructed my shock inserting the same springs of the video with 30w fluid. The difference is remarkable and excellent.

That's cool idea;) what I've done before I insert a soft tubing on the shafting. What I see now is I can add spring inside the shock itself..thanks for the vid bro!

That's simple yet brilliant!! Going to try that... I like more of a Scale ride height too. How DON'T your Stock Plastic Axial Shocks STICK???? Mine was a Kit (never bought a RTR... Just a preference), Built to the instructions with the exception of a liberal amount of Green Slime. I made sure to file the Pistons so there was free movement in both directions, used Shock Pliers ONLY just above the threads.... If mine sits for longer than about 20 minutes, all 4 Shocks WON'T move until I give them a hard push down!!
@fullspeeddesign
@fullspeeddesign 5 жыл бұрын
I've heard of tit but I don't use Green Slime … I have no issue except reasonable leaking with the Axial shocks. I've had gripped pistons with my Ascender but after a (too) long shelf storage. 20 minutes to grip seems very rapid to me. Was it by cold weather ?

No..... This is indoors. I just built it 2 Months ago. It will continue to baffle and annoy I guess, until I can get another set of Redcat's Gen 7 Pro Springs. Those specifically, because one friend has a Gen 7 Pro for over a year, no leaks, no sticking. Another friend just gave me a used set of the same Redcat Socks. Over 2 Years old, never leaked!! 😱 On my other Rig, they don't stick, ever either! It's got Losi 32.5 wt Oil and are dang smooth! Those Shocks have been seriously underrated. My Wraith has the Axial Aluminum ICON Shocks. THOSE are nice!! Unfortunately, as a Disabled Veteran, with VERY little income these Days, I can't afford a set of those..... Also, I have all three of my Rigs running off of ONE Flysky GT-3B Radio... Well, the Transmitter just Fried - and NOTHING is running! 😭 I'm going to be DOA for awhile until I can afford another Transmitter. SO, I guess I've got time, to work on trying to get those SCX10 Shocks right, unless by Miracle, I can score another set of decent Shocks, OR a GT-3B Transmitter..... Not holding my breath. I'll go into those Shocks again... MAYBE, the Pistons could be binding at or near full extension. *Maybe, your "Pen Spring" idea could actually FIX them!!* 😎👍👍 Worth a try, right. Carmine 🚂 🚙 ........ Sorry for the BOOK! Got a lot on my plate.

My 1/12 rc truck comes stock with 60mm shocks. I’m putting bigger tires on it and would need to go to 70mm shocks. Since this mod brings a 90mm down to 76mm, would I have any advantage going with this route vs just a 70mm regular shock?
@adco8672
@adco8672 3 жыл бұрын
Another way to ask is-if you had two of the same trucks, same ride height, one has shorter normal springs and one has longer springs that had this mod and are now the same length as the normal springs, would there be an advantage to having this mod?
@fullspeeddesign
@fullspeeddesign 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried this mod with 1/12 scale shocks. What I notice with this mod is that it limits the ride height when static but the axles are more free to move, when crossing axles for example. It allows what I could name “negative travel” … If I had to make a choice I would pick the modded 90mm rather than the stock 70mm. It also depends of the look you are looking for :-) I also wonder if the springs are not softer than 1/10, if yes the mod should lower the rig a little bit more.

What pros does it have compared to softer main springs without droop springs?

The correct way to make a droop setup is to simply install a softer outer spring and let the weight of the vehicle compress the shocks rather than installing an internal spring and artificially creating droop.
@thatprcrawlerguy187
@thatprcrawlerguy187 4 жыл бұрын
That’s not droop, that’s simply lowering your ride height.
@fullspeeddesign
@fullspeeddesign 3 жыл бұрын
I've tried that in the beginning but when the wheel is in the air it is too free to get down … You can use limiting straps to avoid that too.
@Nickeeefy

If you only make droop with outer springs u will have some problem when climbing. U can push out more degress with a internal and outer spring since the internal one wont let your shocks go full travel. If your car go full travel when climbing a step cliff the weight will puch backwards and make your car flip over on a certain degree, if you have a internal spring pushing back there is a bigger chance u can climb to the top with it. But this is probebly only good for comp crawling.

I understand what your trying to accomplish......but your just screwing your travel...but this isn’t a comp rig....that’s obvious😎
