Love your point about how biking to get groceries encourages us not to overbuy. I tend to buy more fresh, more local when I bike shop. Bonus: Nude Foods delivers for busy families and students who may not always have time to shop. As you noted, with even just two panniers and a bungee cord or two I often can get sooooo much groceries, and bike home with 100s of pounds of food. It's heavy, but not that hard, the bike is doing most of the work. And now with ebikes, boom! You could put it all in a cart behind the bike if we wanted. But main thing you nail: it's more fun, when we open our hearts to caring about our planet, one another, whales, bears, fish, birds. Caring is more fun! And when we work to save the planet we all depend on, some magic happens. Community is healthy, helps our resilience in times of stress or if we're having a hard time. Biking is healthy. Much of the food is actually cheaper, and healthier. And when we vote with our dollars-care about local jobs, independent moms n pops, instead of paying our hard-earned bucks to the Man (Bezos, often), we can all be better off, keep money in our communities. Love your big heart brother- ~ Waylon

awesome store and video ... we got one too but it is not organic unfortunately... 😖 oh please don't get an EBIKE just because ur groceries might be too heavy ... just bike a bit slower for a while and soon u will build that extra stamina to get u over that hill with ur extra weight... even I figured out how to shop for three with a normal bike. I didn't even have any bike bags. I simply stacked three midsized cardboard boxes on top of each other and secured them with two bungees ... the boxes are from the store and made to hold 20+ pounds of apples ... the store would have tossed them too... remember plastic is bad but the production of batteries is even worse ... ok ok UNLESS u dump ur car 🤣👍

Bike commuting for groceries is awesome, been doing it for years. It tends to make me shop smarter and not buy as much. I become a lot more aware of what I am buying and plan out my food a lot better than when I buy. Also, kudos to the women for admitting that there are times when we need plastic. It is something that is needed in the medical field. The rest of us can work to reduce our plastic usage as much as we can.

This is great, you are lucky to have store like this in Boulder. I live in the Netherlands, and we are just starting with zero waste shopping. I’ve been car-free in central Denver for over 3 years. My bike broke 2 years ago & had been exclusively on foot since, with a little transit for long jaunts. It’s not easy to buy & consume primarily fresh produce without a car, but it can be done. Ironically, I found it easier to buy groceries when I’m on foot than on bike because I can buy more as I can carry two bags by hand with my backpack full-that’s when transit helps!

Thanks Ryan for making us aware of this wonderful store. We need to totally stop our addiction to plastic. 0ver 60% of all clothing in the world is now made of plastic. Even your blue jeans and wool socks have plastic thread in them. Thousands of years from now there will be a layer of plastic demarcating this time in the earth's history. Good to see a store that really cares about the future generations and the mess we are leaving them. Shopping by bike is fun and so convenient. I can use a shopping bag bungeed on the rack or panniers or even a trailer. At times I just walk since I live in city and areas are still laid out like all inclusive villages around 50% don't own any cars. There's a choice of many buses (peak times every 6 minutes), trains, underground, car share, bike share, taxis, walking and riding. Around the corner has many shops including one similar to your Nude shop. Ours is too expensive to shop in regularly at the moment. Most walk to the shops because it's too much of a hassle to be driving around finding the limited parking places. That takes up more time than the 5-10 minute walk to get there. I found that out when they did a local survey. I use the bike when I want a ride or want to shop further away or I'm passing by on my work commute. I also use it when I want to carry a lot. It's great to take stuff to the reuse/recycling centre too.

Nice to see that someone can avoid plastic. Here in my city 10% heat with soft coal, 5% heat with hard coal, 40% heat with burner oil, I heat with electric baseboard (getting a heat pump on the 28th) 30% heat with electric basebord and the remainder use Scotian Shelf natural gas. Our power comes from about 30 hydro dams and 1 50 year old CANDU Nuclear reactor on a medium level active fault line. Locally we have a refinery (North Americas largest and newest 2012) that ships one to two tankers of nylon resin to be dumped in the UN approved ocean disposal site off Somalia, (cause of the pirates). Saudi crude leaves nylon where as Alberta Crude has tar as the reminant part. Tar gets used up in construction! Because of the left over unsellible nylon that gets dumped at sea, I am on the fence on using plastic vs ocean dumping nylon resin mixed with unsellable solvents. No question neither is good just which is worse, and which is better! So many factors to everything. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ PS. CO² is likely going to be backburnered by the mass wasting of the arctic permafrost that is melting from our stupid developments above the 60th parallel and not so much our fossil fuel use. The mass wasting releases huge amounts of methane CH⁴ gas. Methane does not absorbe into our oceans, also vegitation does not ingest methane so it can exist for hundreds of years and according to PBS NOVA each molcule is 43 times the greenhouse effect of CO² (Environment Canada says methane is 9X CO²). Eather way both are really bad! We need to stop all northern developments, all arctic ice breaking (except for local harbor clearing) all construction way up there, frankly we need to remove every non aborigional person who lives up there to keep the heat reflective white snowy ground cover everywhere even on the oceans! If we fail we all lose!

I was very surprised last week when I bought a juice on an unexpectedly long ride and it came in a glass bottle. It came home with me and now I can reuse it for juice into the future. I do all my grocery shopping by bike. I have a basket on the back which fits a refrigerator bag from my local shop perfectly and a basket on the front. 2 bags of shopping each trip is enough, anymore than about 15kg and the bike becomes unwieldy. This was a wonderful video. Wish all city had this type of store. I am changing my life style I am trying to bike to my every day errands. Targets only one mile from my house “why do I drive?” The groceries store is presenting a bit more of a challenge, I will have to ride the stroud at one of the intersections that merges on the by pass. Though I am a confident rider my special needs son loves to go to the grocery stores with me. So I have not yet figured out how to take him with me. He also has therapy once a week that I would love him to ride a bike there(along side of me) but at this point I have not figured out a safe way to get there.

Thank you for this video. It’s really inspiring to here you and Waylon talk! Also it’s really interesting to learn about the differences between 🇺🇸 and 🇸🇪. In all Swedish cities there are small recycling stations in abundance. There everyone can deposit plastics, carton, metall products, glass etc etc. it’s really easy available. In Sweden we don’t have any land fills and everyone goes to their city recycling stations. There you can deposit bigger things like sofas, bigger things of metall, old freezers, cell phones etc. If you have any nice things you don’t need anymore you can put them in a special house for the Red Cross to sell in their shop. Also there is an extra fee when you buy certain containers of plastic and aluminum (such as Coke cans etc). You got your money back when you recycle the container. Where I live, riding you’re bike to work/school and the grocery store is a normal everyday thing. Although many people are really relying on their cars. It would be really interesting to learn about you’re situation in the US compared to this. What are you’re options when it comes to recycling in your everyday life? It would be so interesting to see a video about this!

I think this is a wonderful idea. Had look for somewhere like this near me in the UK. I did find a store, with a big selection. HOWEVER, their stuff is typically 2 or more times the price of similar items in the local supermarket and their baked beans for instance, are 5 times the price of those in a discount store locally. In addition, I need to buy the containers to put the stuff in as well (they don't offer the cleaning service you talked about. Given the current energy and price squeeze generally, I think businesses like this need to become more competitive if people (like me) on modest incomes are going to shop there. Sadly, in the UK, at least, its a niche market for the the wealthy.

I was appalled when I stopped at a fast-food place on one of my bike rides and I saw just how much plastic was wasted. I now carry a stainless steel 16 oz drinking glass, a stainless steel folding straw, and a hobo knife, which separates into a knife, a fork, and a spoon. I could just carry titanium flatware, but the hobo knife (from K-Bar) is a great conversation starter. Besides, I've had the hobo knife for years, but now, I carry it in my biking daypack.

I have been shopping local by using a Cargo Ebike for 5 plus years. Here in Wisconsin we have Food Coops and you weigh the jars when you come in and then you fill the jars at checkout and another place for laundry and other cleaning products. The town I live in has a population of 10000 people and the nearest town that has the store that I speak of is 45 miles away. This would require taking a car or a Ebike food ride that would take up most of the day. I think I found a solution . They have a bus that will take a Ebike and place it on the front of the bus! The cost $7.50 round trip one time but if you buy 10 trips you pay $5 round trip! They do the round trip 3 times a day, so I can shop and visit my friend in that town and catch the bus back home! Sometimes you need to get creative living in a small town! Like Ryan's rides the zero waste journey doesn't go perfect every time. Start small and grow over time! Here are a few things that save on plastic waste. I have reusable zip lock bags designed to be used many times. Don't throw out your old glass jars and use them at bulk food stores. Buy or grow food and then you process the food using a canner. The jars are reused and now I found reusable lids. My city garden produces over 50% of my food but I started small and built up to 400 sq ft. Grow a few containers of garden plants and enjoy the great tasting food. Ask that neighbor that has a big garden, if they have extra food you would be interested. I have had too much lettuce and cucumbers this year and I have given away over 100 lbs of food. The funny thing is that I am looking for people at certain times of the year that want organic free produce! Ryan go to the next step and buy a blender that makes peanut butter,almond butter! It tastes better than the store ground peanut butter. I add a touch of buttery tasting olive oil. Great video and most of all have a great week!

One of your previous "groceries by bike" videos got me thinking about this not just for groceries but all those local errands that I might normally do by car. Since the pandemic I've been working from home as well so my car usage has gone down quite significantly just from that. I've since bought a trailer, converted one of my older bikes to an e-bike and that's now my "in town errand runner". I've been doing this for a couple of weeks now and it's great! The trailer is a good size so plenty of room for a weeks groceries for two. Next level is using it to go to the DIY store for home improvements. I reckon I can do it! The only thing we use the car for now is if we're going out of town, particularly if we're taking our two dogs further than local parks.

@@duzer Crazy thing is, it's actually faster by bike than it is by car; thankfully where I live there's a good network of cycle paths between home and the supermarket. doing errands on bike suck, i did it for 19 yrs. Recently bought a car, and i can hit 4 or 5 errands all at once. When I did by bike, i was always grocery shopping, after work, after a run, on the weekends. I had to, cause you know the bike can only carry so much.
@SteelR4t2 жыл бұрын
@@ricodelavega4511 And now you've turned in to one of those angry people in a metal box so much so that you have to negatively comment on someone elses success. Why? What do you gain from that and why do you think it'll affect what I'm going to do? Spoiler alert.. it doesn't do either. I have a trailer and a couple of panniers on my bike. We plan the stuff we need for the week before I go out so that I can carry all the stuff on the bike. We did this for the car trips too, for what its worth. Same quantity on the bike as in the car, so no need for repeat trips. Shame it didn't work for you, but it works for me.

@@SteelR4t that only works for you because you're ok paying $38 for that protein shake cannister at your grocery store you know is $24 at target. I wasnt ok with that.
