What is in Spam? It is one of life’s greatest mysteries - a true puzzlement that has plagued any person with a pantry since it was introduced in 1937. This canned block of luncheon meat rose to prominence during the Great Depression and has been a cupboard staple ever since. A meat of questionable origin that takes on the shape of its container should not have been a hit, and yet here we are. There are even some hipster recipes that are devoted to turning Spam into haute cuisine. But, what is in it? In this video, we’ll reveal how Spam is really made.

I honestly thought Spam wasn't real as a kid, I saw it in a reality TV show once and thought it was a made up brand for the show that played into the trope of "Canned food that's supposed to bring you happiness is filled with a mystery meat that has a very dark secert to it" but then I saw it on the shelves and was absolutely shocked.

I used to think SPAM translated as literally 'Spare Parts and Meat', so I thought it was like tongue and brain and offal my whole childhood, and I grew up in Honolulu where it's literally everywhere even the McDonalds here sells it. Knowing that it's basically just pork shoulder actually makes it way more appetizing again, and I'm comfortable eating it for the first time in decades.

It makes a lot of sense that Spam has a factory over in S. Korea. Koreans absolutely LOVE IT!! They give it away as gifts - like as part of a gift basket that includes other things like fruit, candy etc. Korean "sushi" is called "Kimbap" and yes it's absolutely mixed in along with a number of other things (pickled radish, carrot strips, strips of fried egg and that fake crab stuff). It's delicious and it only cost about 2 or 3 bucks (in Canadian currency that is) when I lived there from 2002-2005.

Oh yeah we had a mini refrigerator to store the ham, cheese and sodas.

When we'd go up to the rez, both sets of grandparents would make a super hearty meal of just SPAM, Eggs, Onions, Potatoes, and flour tortillas. Even on the coldest days with the wind cutting through our coats, that simple meal, paired with black "cowboy coffee" out of the enamel pot, kept us warm and full. In Europe it's listed as a skinless sausage. It's just pork sausage. Better nutrition than most "canned hams" that are ham scraps in aspic. If you aren't used to salty foods, get the low sodium version.

"Is that ham processed?" "Is that ham processed? If it's processed I don't want it" Ma'am, that is an eleven pound whole slab of deli ham. It has no bones, fat or connective tissue. It is an amalgamation of the meat of several pigs, emulsified, liquified, strained and ultimately inexorably joined in an unholy meat obelisk. God had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this ham monolith exists proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom. This prism of pork is more than deli meat. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for the natural order. It is hubris manifest. We also have a lower sodium variety is you would prefer that.

You gotta eat it with eggs cooked over easy. Cook the on medium low heat so they stay soft. Slice the spam into about 1/8 in thick rectangular slices and fry in olive oil on medium heat until desired crispness is reached. Cook some white rice and have one egg per scoop of rice. Make sure the yolk is runny. Place the egg on top of the scoop of rice so when you eat it the yolk mixes with the rice. Eat with the spam slices. You can actually get this at McDonald's in Hawaii.

Anyone who is “too good” to eat spam, even once in a great while it’s not someone I’m going to have much in common with as this video showed it’s mostly pork shoulder and ham unless you were Muslim or Jewish there’s absolutely nothing wrong with spam in fact you can do a lot of things with it my favorite is the fry it until it is golden brown slap on a nice coating of barbecue sauce and boil it in the oven for about a minute in the oven caramelizing the barbecue sauce it was a good dish until Sweet baby Ray’s barbecue sauce came out that stuff just send it to a whole new level. One of my fondest memories was I had bought 5 gallons of paint and my parents and I had cleared out the living room and laid down new carpet and painted the entire living room we did this all in a day and it was a hot day at the end I fried up and made us spam sandwiches with cold beer after working in the heat we needed the sodium it was a simple meal but damn it was delicious I will always remember my parents and I sitting in our beautiful redone living room and enjoying that simple meal
