This Is How TERRIBLE Downtown Fresno, California Is Now

THIS is the 5th biggest city in California?
I’ve been to a lot of places, and for a major US city, Fresno California might have the most depressing downtown I’ve ever visited. You’ll see what I’m talking about soon, but trust me on this, it’s rundown, unappealing, uninspiring and just blah. And it’s not like the place is falling down because people are leaving. No way. There’s a lot of people who have been forced out of the Bay Area because it’s so expensive. Fresno is only two hours away, so a lot of people are coming here these days.
I visited Fresno as part of a tour of struggling California cities in October of 2021, and I left wondering if Fresno will get better or if this is a sign of the times in this state.
Right now, we’re on the south side of downtown right before dark. Soon, we’ll drive around the actual downtown area and you can see what the rest of the place looks like. As you can see there’s a lot of homeless people here. Like many other cities in California, the really high cost of living means if you can’t afford to get the hell out of this state, you’re forced onto the streets. Of course drugs are a problem here like they are all over the west coast. Apparently, the city of Fresno has talked about moving its homeless population into former drug and prostitute infested motels that it bought and remodeled. We’ll see if that actually happens or not.
There are many bad parts of Fresno, which we won’t focus on for this video - it’s strictly a look at downtown. I did cover bad areas of Fresno in another video. The west side of Fresno has been home to substandard housing for decades now. A lot of the black residents in west Fresno have been complaining about lower life expectancy and bad air quality for years. But a lot of the black population in Fresno boned out, and have been replaced by hispanic families. Today, 51% of Fresno is hispanic, making it the third-largest majority hispanic city in the country. East Fresno is also older and more rundown.
The north and south ends of Fresno are a little better. In those parts of town, there’s new housing being put up all over and a lot of restaurants and retail. Fresno has some culture - there’s a lot of theaters and museums in town, and it’s home to several colleges, but Fresno is a large city with a lot of poor people. 1 in 4 residents here lives below the poverty line, including about 4 in 10 kids that’s just terrible.
Fresno has about 550,000 people, making it the 5th biggest city in California. The unemployment rate in Fresno is super high for California. Outside of health care or government jobs, there aren’t many job opportunities in Fresno. But there’s lots of crime. Gangs, drive by shootings, drugs, kidnappings and sex trafficking are real problems here. The sheriff had put together a Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement unit to battle them. But once gang problems settle in, they are often hard to eradicate. Overall, Fresno has one of the highest crime rates in the nation - where people have a 1 in 25 chance of being victimized. Car breakins are up a whopping 40% lately.
There were 6,000 violent crimes here last year. Stabbings and shootings happen here all the time. Like ALL the time. And drugs continue to plague the central valley.
Now, I know I harp on democrat cities a lot, but Fresno hasn’t had a liberal mayor in office since 1993. Fresno County leans liberal, but it’s pretty close. There’s a lot of farms all over this county, and smaller communities with older white voters. Imagine how bad Fresno would be if it were controlled by democrats. It’s possible that might happen soon.
You can snag a home here for about $340,000. For California, that’s like dirt cheap. But I do have to say, if you wanted to move to an affordable, conservative leaning city, Fresno is pretty much one of the few options you have in this state, outside of the far northern counties near Oregon. Because Orange County and San Diego are certainly NOT affordable anymore. So now that I think about it, Fresno might be the last big city where you could afford a home and not be brow beaten by liberal policies in California. Yet.
Driving around Fresno at night can be really scary. It’s dark and seedy and there really aren’t a lot of places open past 8 pm. And driving around at night I didn’t see a single police officer. The rule of thumb is if you’re gonna move to the Fresno region, pick Clovis. It’s way better there.

Well a whole lot of right-wing bias here. California's budget was in the red during the previous three governors tenures, all of whom were Republicans. Now our budgets in the green. Further, Fresno's economies in the tank precisely because of Republican policies. And anybody who says that Fresno is the worst city in California has clearly never been to Bakersfield. This whole video is a big pile of horseshit. Don't come back.

@@chrisperry9002 Clovis is still fine to this day. They are very conservative and republican so they make sure all the homeless and crime is pushed to the fresno borders. The problem now are people from the bay area who are the complete opposite of the typical Clovis resident (so diverse, lower income from where they originate, progressive, liberal democrat, pro on defunding police, want housing for homless right in their backyard, want super dense building of housing, etc) are now moving in and ruining Clovis as well. This can be said to all other similar cities like Clovis across California.

Fun fact: Fresno has one of the highest number of multiple ethnicities as a percentage living in one area. As a result many corporations will introduce test products into our market because it's the best way to determine how different ethnicities will react. There are many products that are sold here temporarily that never get sold anywhere else.

Wow! Thanks for talking about Fresno. In Fresno, you just have to pick your spots. Avoid potentially unsafe areas and go on about your business. Yes, homeless is problem and has been for 20 + years. Downtown is not a sight for sore eyes. Fresno is growing away from downtown, seems like that's going to be the trend. The second guy is on point about Fresno's diversity and from that standpoint, Fresno has been blessed with an abundant of immigrants. This also affects Fresno overall social-economic level. All in all, Fresno is what it is. What you see is what you get. It isn't going to change much.

I was born and raised in Fresno (just recently moved to the Oregon coast) and it actually has a special place in my heart. It is a pretty sprawling city and it’s very easy to avoid the unfortunate and blighted areas. Being from the North, we never went downtown much unless we had a specific purpose like Jury Duty or an event at the Saroyan. The worst part about it is honestly the summer heat- if we had the climate of say the Bay Area, I probably wouldn’t have left.

But with gentrification hitting all parts of the state, Fresno might look a whole lot different in 10 years 🤨

People not from Sacramento have no clue what they are talking about Haha it does have some nice parts but I think people see the surrounding suburbs that were built in the 2000s when they drive by on the freeway and make a broad conclusion. Sacramento is the same as every other city in the Valley and NorCal. It might be worse than most. I really think Nick needs to take a tour of Sacramento and see for himself. Stockton Blvd, MLK Blvd, Fruitridge Road, Franklin Blvd, Florin Rd, Mack Rd, Watt Ave, Grand Ave, Marysville Blvd, El Camino Ave, Traction Ave, Lampassas Ave, Rio Linda Blvd, Norwood Ave, Roseville Rd. The list is endless, Sac has more hoods and homeless camps than can be named and alot of them are in unincorporated areas. That's what makes Sacramento deceiving almost 40% of the County is Unincorporated. Nowhere in the United States has a larger unincorporated population. People look at sacramento STATISTICS and don't factor in the large unincorporated areas that are indeed Sacramento. Check out the homicide count for the entire county of Sacramento it's cracking triple digits really without any other cities adding to its homicide count. Sacramento also has been voted the most diverse city in the Country by Time Magazine Since 2002. SAC is a very misunderstood city because people never come here they only drove through to go the bay area or Tahoe. Sacramento is just now being talked about because of the housing market becoming hot causing gentrification and also the hip hop music scene becoming hot. Come check it out for yourself Nick. The surrounding suburbs of Folsom, Elk Grove, Roseville are definitely nice but Sacramento Proper and unincorporated areas...most not so much.

In the past few years, Fresno has made some major growth, no thanks to the local or state government. The individuals of the city have stepped up in the past 10 years, to revitalize the downtown area. Moving in small local businesses, preserving historical buildings and sites, getting community events going on every couple of weeks. The pandemic hit hard, though. A lot of us lost our jobs, our homes, the ability to afford prescriptions, etc. I was living in a tent in my parents backyard for 5 months. The homeless population boomed, and reliance on drugs exploded…. Fresno is not great, but the few individuals that have the means to make changes have made it their mission to do so, while local government officials squabble over things that’ll help nobody.

Yes, we have homeless like other large cities. You drove during pandemic while residence shelter in place. Then circled the Potter's Wheel homeless area food line area. You truly did not show downtown, Van Ness. You did not show the Brew District, Mural District, Fulton Mall, Tower District... all stroll districts with thriving businesses pre-pandimic in downtown area. We have had Republican mayors and focus on ag, and see homelessness as a choice. We have a mayer that focuses on crime and gang reduction. Like the guest shared, Hwy 99 is older than 41, and through poor areas. Lots of nonprofits helping the homeless and drug problems. We need more education at a young age about dangers of drugs. Although unemployment is high do to the Great Resignation, there are jobs everywhere you look.

The worse thing that I ever experienced was that one night I forgot to lock my car & someone stole my daughter's baby seat , other that that and the weather on summer ( that you will get used to after a season or 2 ) I think is a great place to live .

There are quite a few near perfect places still left in the US. They tend to be smaller tight knit communities that simply don't put up with problems like what Fresno and other larger urban areas are dealing with. Just because a community is poor doesn't mean it has to be a shit hole. This comes down to instilling decent values in kids when they are young, allowing them the opportunity to become non criminal youth/ adults and if need be moving to a more prosperous area and growing a lawful life. You really just have to draw a line in the sand one day and say after this time and date, everyone who gets convicted goes to jail or prison , serves their full sentences etc. It'll cost lots of money and feed the prison industrial complex for sure but the quality of life will once again come back to even the worst of the communities across the US . There is absolutely no need to let a city become what Fresno has become..

Politicians should have tried harder to keep people from losing their homes because once they hit the street, they get on drugs and then they are pretty much just wastes of oxygen and space. Like LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and Chicago etc!!! Is your point to show the shittiest part of my city? We have very affluent parts of the city too with multimillion dollar houses. Van Ness Blvd, and extension, Woodward park and lakes area, Fig Garden area, The north side is clean and beautiful....to the east side we have the beautiful charming city of Clovis with great schools, gated communities with big beautiful homes that are untouchable in the Bay Area, LA, San Diego, due to price, and very low crime. Our foothills are wonderful for hiking, biking and general out door adventures! We have great agriculture, lakes, parks, and Kings Canyon and Yosemite near by, Fresno State is one of the top agricultural, business, health care, and educational university’s. If you wanted to show the shit side of my city you succeeded and I agree.... however, if your going to show the shitty side.....show our best side too. We are proud hard working people here....so DO NOT BASH my city because you toured the shitty south side and spoke to a few down and out people who dislike Fresno!!! Talk to educated and very successful people too, who are that way because it is Fresno..... which seemed to be one of the last affordable major cities in California for starting a business and buying a home until LA and Bay Area investors showed up.....Especially if you did NOT grow up here my guy!

I’ve lived in Fresno for almost 10 years and I agree a lot with the things the gentleman from Fresno said. He paints a pretty unbiased accurate view of Fresno. I definitely agree that it is one of the last mid sized cities in California that is affordable to own a home. I would not be able to be a homeowner in the Bay or LA, or even the coast but I’m able to own a home with a 1 person income in Fresno. And, now with home values on the up and up, Fresno homeowners are able to gain a lot of equity. Totally agree that downtown sucks and it’s grimy. Long story short, don’t go downtown you have no reason to be in the extreme ghetto parts. If one is looking to move to Fresno, no matter what part you are able to afford to live in, most likely you will be in North Fresno Riverpark area, Fig Garden, by Fresno State or somewhere in Clovis. Yes there’s some horrible stuff in Fresno, but it’s just like any city, don’t go to the bad parts.

I've lived in Fresno for 6 years having moved from L.A. Initially, the poor air quality knocked me down but my body adapted and I bought two high-quality air purifiers for my house. Fresno is bicycle friendly, almost very bicycle friendly. Weather is suitable for bike riding all year except for maybe a few days. Living in Central Fresno, I've been able to live without a car as grocery store, library, bank, mall, post office, Target are all within easy biking distance. And then there's the well-run bus system that I use once in a while. It doesn't freeze. Maybe a bit of ice on your windshield or some on the edge of your roof at sunup but it's Climate Zone 9b and good things grow if you water them. No mosquitoes except in the Spring near the river. You can still buy a 3BR/2BA house with two car garage and front yard and backyard for $250,000 Hot in summer but low in humidity so allows use of less-expensive evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners. I bought a house in 2018 within easy walking distance of work that has increased in value by $100k since I bought it. I feel mostly safe. There was a drive-by shooting a block over from me but it took place at a Section 8 rental full of welfare recipients unsuitably placed in the neighborhood. The neighbors would like to get their hands on the people that rented their very nice duplex that has become a total dump since occupied by Section 8 darlings. The Fresno Housing Authority is a big source of problems in Fresno with little or no oversight or transparency. Fresno has been good to me. I think almost all of the people in Fresno are good people. I've enjoyed Fresno immensely compared to my experience living in seriously mentally ill Santa Barbara. Once High Speed Rail is complete, this place will be a boomtown. An hour to L.A., an hour to S.F. But when?

I lived in this area on and off for over 10 years and it is overall one of my favorite parts of California for a number of reasons. This guy starts things off on the wrong foot and seems rather bigoted, but the guy he interviews straightens things out. Yeah, homelessness and petty crime have grown in the area but the violent gang violence down town isn’t what it used to be. Bottom line is use some common sense and avoid seedier areas of town! I would say that Clovis isn’t what it used to, the poverty and petty theft have become more “equalized” across Fresno county over the last 20 years.

The problem is from 40 years of urban sprawl. The developers and city government keep building outward with not enough redevelopment in the center of town. The other big problem is drugs and homelessness. There are a lot of awesome places to live in Fresno and Clovis. The guy that was interviewed accurately described the history and issues.

I grew up in Fresno/Clovis through out the 80s and into the mid 90s. My parents were first generation Hmong refugees who farmed all their lives in the central valley until the Clinton administration took over. I spent most my childhood there so I'm a little bias when I say I miss California, and that California will always be home. Transitioning from the west coast to the east coast I can honestly say that every state and major city in America has its own problems. There is no perfection. Even in a little no name state like SC has its ups and downs. It all depends on what part of town you live in.

We moved from Fresno and Belmont to Nees and Blackstone. Gottschalk's moved its headquarters there across from Woodward Park. The center of town is arguably River Park to this day. The reasons for the ridiculously high home prices now are: 1) MASSIVELY EASY CREDIT, 2) Artificially suppressed interest rates by the Fed, 3) Mortgage banking system where the loan originator sells the mortgages it makes. When everyone buys on credit, price becomes no object to short-sighted (aka dumb) buyers. They bid up the price way beyond their real means to repay their mortgage. All the rest of the savvy potential buyers are then left with a choice of either buy at inflated prices or find another option. This bubble finally crashes when the US govt declares it will NOT bail out failing banks. Credit will naturally contract, interest rates will rise to account for risk, and house prices will fall to the level that the mortgage can be repaid from a a reasonable level of family income.

I live here in Fresno. I've lived in Bakersfield for 12 years, too. Was originally born an raised in Hanford, 40 miles southeast of here. One problem I noticed, especially in Hanford, people from LA and San Francisco moved here to the valley, and used of for a "back bedroom" and commute to LA and SF to work, because it's cheaper to live in the valley. Problem is, when all these people came here in the 80's and 90's, from LA and SF, they brought their gang mentality, drugs, and major crimes with them. The problem isn't with the migrant workers, or the people like myself born and raised here, but all these crowding in here from the big cities who cannot assimilate to small town living, and a slower pace of life.

I went to Downtown Fresno and thought it was an extremely depressing town. It was not until I went to other areas that I began to appreciate it. The people are very nice there, and the parks are beautiful! My girlfriend from Costa Rica resides in Visalia with her family. Trips from Tulare county to fresno are fun and special to them, lake Kawea in the sequoias as well. They have great malls and ethnic food in the central valley. The housing is dirt cheap there California wise. For a good reason though. The issue I always had there were my allergies. This is coming from someone in the LA/OC areas so I am spoiled with amazing weather. Although I think fresno for the most part is improving, Visalia seems to be declining.

Why would I move Texas and take a salary cut lol? Or Tennessee. Plus Pismo beats any beach in those state and is only two hours away not 5-8 hours. After my tech job went permanent remote I moved to Fresno in June 2020 and all I can say I don’t miss my expensive rent in San Francisco at all nor the traffic. Overall Fresno has been a good city for me. I already drove to a tech conference in San Jose, California and still feel connected to Silicon Valley and luckily my neighbor is also a programmer as well haha. Also Luckily my two kids have found a coding place called “Bitewise” to meet other coding kids in the area. Fresno Pros: diversity, liberal, good Chinese/Indian/Mexican food, friendly people, lots of jobs, live music all the time, art scene is awesome (art hop), very dog-friendly, nobody cares what you wear, growing tech town, international airport can fly to SF or LA under an hour which allows me to then fly to Sweden to visit my wife’s family, tons of attractions throughout the city so there's never nothing to do Cons: some traffic nothing like SF or LA tho, might become to liberal oh well lol.

Everything overpaid mayors and so called officials have done up to this very moment has been a disastrous failure. It is time to get tough with the zombies who have absolutely no shame and only look forward to their next fix and the crimes commited to obtain it. Causing an extreme health hazard wherever they go with used needless, blood ,urine, feces, trash and even dead bodies should have never been tolerated to begin with.
