The World Rally Championship returns to Mexico, and for the first time with the new Rally 1 cars. A new challenge for these hybrid-powered cars, which will suffer the heat and heights in the timed sections of the toughest rally in the world.
The rally began in Guanajuato, with two passes through an urban section through the tunnels of the town. Ott Tanak took the lead, gaining a significant advantage. But in the first stage on Friday, a stage called the chocolate, Tanak had turbo problems and lost 12 minutes. Piere Lou Loubet also broke down his Ford Puma Rally 1 and Jourdan Serderirs blocked the stage forcing him to neutralize it. The next leader was Espaekka Lappi, with the Hyundai i20 Rally 1 going head-to-head with Sebastien Ogier and his fast Toyota GR Yaris Rally 1.
But DRAMA, Lappi crashes into a utility pole on Saturday's first stage of the WRC Mexico rally and is forced to retire. Ogier takes the lead and the fight moves between Evans and Neuville for second place. A fight that lasted until the power stage, in which Thierry Neuville with his Hyundai i20 Rally overtook Elfyn Evans who had problems with the suspension of his Toyota.
Finally Sebastien Ogier won, surpassing Sebastien Loeb's record of victories in the Mexico rally.
Dani Sordo was 5th, with many problems, punctures and going off the track.
In WRC 2 Gus Greensmith won with the new Skoda Fabia Rally 2 evo, followed by Emil Lindholm and Oliver Solberg. All with skoda Fabia R5 and rally 2.
Will the WRC be able to surpass F1? We are at a time when Formula 1 is more popular than rallies.
