We have arrived in Miri, one of the most popular places all over Sarawak, Malaysia. Let´s go for a walkabout to see the place and have some of the local foods. Let´s find out what they got. This will be the last stop before heading over to Brunei - if we can manage.

Welcome to my hometown Miri! I see you're staying at the old CBD of Miri. The temple you visited, the Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, actually had a unique history - it is the oldest temple in Miri, erected before the founding of Miri City (when Miri was still a fishing village before oil was struck). It had stood standing for 110+ years, witnessed the whole Miri City under fire twice (once by the Japanese forces, and once by the Allied forces), and quelled a pandemic which plaqued Miri at the time (according to some locals). I hope you get to meet locals that could tell you more about the history of Miri. Safe travels~

9:58 Why Chinese presence is big in the cities and towns? Simple. They came and set up commercial settlements back in the days. Indigenous people had only started to join in in the last few decades. Traditionally they were farmers, hunter-gatherer (a small number of Penans still live the nomadic lifestyle in the forest)… Indigenous people are still quite big on farming. Some on a small scale and a few has medium size cash crops. Coastal tribes are mostly fishermen. 11:54 There was (still is?) a swine disease probably a year or so ago (just after the end of lockdown?) and butchers find it hard to get supplies… 19:41 Mi kering is similar if not the same as kolo mi. 😆 Some sellers add leafy vege., fishballs, sliced fish cakes… They do come in varieties.

🕙 Time 21:42 🤔 What's the filling of the chinese kueh/cake? - 🫣 Although 🥸 cannot recall the name of that kueh you ate 😅 but 🥸 can recall the good taste 😘 of it's Turnip/Sengkuang filling ( 🥸 often write wrongly as Tulip 🌷). 🧐 Due to language different, certain names or meaning may differ from places to places. 🤓 The "turnip" or sengkuang (In Malay) mentioned here is big yellow roots tubes compare to the small red-white one you know. 🤓 Some interesting information 🥸 found on the net: 🧐 Turnips/蕪菁 (looks like red radish) - Scientific name Brassica rapa, variety rapa. 👉🏽 Also known as white turnip, hardy biennial plant in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). 🧐 Sengkuang/沙葛 @ Jicama - Scientific name Pachyrhizus erosus or Pachyrhizus tuberosus. 👉🏽 Skin colour like potato that resembles a large turnip. 👉🏽 taste like water chestnuts but not as sweet and less expensive. 🧐 Water Chestnuts/Sengkuang Cina/馬蹄 - Scientific name Eleocharis dulcis. 👉🏿 Despite being called chestnuts, water chestnuts are not nuts at all. They are aquatic tuber vegetables. 🫣 There is another Water Chestnut/菱角 @ Water Caltrop (Trapa natans), also an aquatic plant. 👉🏽 Not to be confused with above similar name, Chinese water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) of the family Cyperaceae. 👉🏽 AKA Bull Nut with dark hard bull head shape 🐮outer shell. 🤔 Why the confusion of local carrot cake and western carrot cake? 👉🏽 Radish/蘿蔔 is called Lobak in Malay language in 🇲🇾 Malaysia and often is called "white carrot (white radish)/lobak putih" to distinguish from Carrot 🥕 which is call "red radish/lobak merah/紅蘿蔔". 👉🏿 So locally radish cake becomes carrot cake. 👉🏽 In 🇲🇨 Indonesia carrot 🥕 is called wortel (as in 🇭🇺 Dutch). 🤓 Kueh in Malaysia is any cake of Malay, Chinese, or Indian origin. 🤓 The main differences between western cakes and local kuih are: 👉🏽 There is usually no leavening agent in the recipe for kuih; Butter or margarine is seldom used or used sparingly in making kuih; 👉🏽 Kuih are usually cooked using the steaming method rather than baking as in western cakes; and 👉🏽 Coconut milk and palm sugar are favourite ingredients in kuih, something that western cakes seldom use. 🥸 🙏 Sorry 🙏 another long one from me 😁, hope you get to know Malaysia a little bit more.

@Gary_and_Linda miri is more than meets the eye. It is the starting point to mulu national park where the marriot hotel is located. And of course the world famous apostles and sarawak Chambers are located. Many young people (vloggers) will just know sun doong caves which is newly discovered and in terms of volume is the largest cave yet(because it is high). However, sarawak chamber by flat floor area is still the largest. It is a unesco world heritage site.

Mr Mooshine, how long have you been swam your home country? How long are you planning and continue to be on your tour? Are you traveling on some goals, such as I would to visit all countries in Asia, or visit say 100+ countries in the world? How do you workout children’s education, I guess the obvious answer may be Home Schooling? Are all your visits pre-planned; cities to visit, the duration, places to stay? Will appreciate your answers. May God bless you and your family.

Yeah, you are right, "tikus" is rat/mouse. I just wonder why that vendor labels it as "mi tikus"...it will frighten customers away especially those who do not know about this noodles...😂 Actually, this "mi tikus" is "loh si fun" .. in the Cantonese dialect (one of the many dialects used by Chinese ) The noodles look quite similar to "cendols", right? Anyway, great to see everyone enjoyed the food. Thanks for sharing, Sir.

@@yvesthesleeve The noodle is more commonly known as silver needle noodle in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and rat noodle or "mouse tail noodles" in Malaysia and Singapore. They are sometimes also called as pin noodles.[2] The noodles are named as such because the shape of the noodles is long and tapered much like a rat's tail, translucent white like needles, or from the way the noodles are made by pushing them through the holes of a sieve.

Wiki: Kue semprong, Asian egg roll, sapit, sepit, kue Belanda, or kapit, (Love letters in English) is an Indonesian traditional wafer snack. IIRC the SEAsian Chinese appropriate it for their CNY celebrations, yet I don't see the Indonesians kicking up a sh*tstorm about that!

not sure is only me or not(Sarawakian). But I will feel little offended if strangers asked what is my race (except someone I know). However, most Chinese in Sibu, Bintulu and Miri are Christians, so Buddhist temples maybe less crowded in these area despite high Chinese population😂

in the video, there are not many people at the Tua Pek Kong temple because it's not the 1st day or the 15th day of the lunar calendar, it's quite crowded during those times... and the temple still under renovation, now it's close for visitors until next month...

@@yvesthesleeve, asking “where are you from?” is not the same as “what race are you?”. 😆 This is something that East Malaysian find particularly sensitive about. We get ask that question all the time when we’re in the peninsula too and it’s never a question we like to deal with. Just because we’re in the same FEDERATION doesn’t mean we share 100% mindset. We don’t mind discussing more detailed racial stuff once we’re more comfortable with each other, not something we like to discuss at the first “hi”.

In Miri City, Chinese population was about 55% of total population of Miri. And the area that showing in video, actually is Chinese wet and dry market, that’s why you will meet most of Malaysian Chinese here. If you were going to Tamu, another traditional market, then you will see many type of ethics there. By the way, Sarawak have more than 40 ethics, and quite some of the ethic is looks like Chinese also…. We have many families are mixed-race here….
