I did not plan for this video as I did not want to create another bus on the road video. But on our ride from Bintulu into Miri we stopped to have lunch at some point and I saw this absolutely amazing market there where people were selling all kinds of foods and also all kinds of exotic fruits. Then I saw this durian like fruit again that I had seen in Sibu and also in Bintulu which was still quite a bit different in color and shape than its famous cousin, so I had to buy and try it. I bouth some different foods and we had a little food picknick on the bus. Apparently this kind of wild durian is only to be found on Sarawak and nowhere else. I still am not 100 % sure if this is what it is as the people there told me many names, none of which I could remember.... but one thing I know for sure, this fruit blew my mind.

And very easy to open up the skin too, thorn not sharp compare to Durian. Nyekak, consider mild compare to usual Durian. No harm, you can eat much. Body less react to it. It's also less smelly compare to Durian. Buah Isu is different from Nyekak. More spiky, taste wise is different as well.

The chickpeas are called kacang(nuts) kuda(horse) because in the olden days they were commonly sold on race courses. That wild durian is called "nya-kak" my favourite because it has less smelly and creamier. Actually you can find it all throughout Borneo island. Buah Isu is another cousin of Nyakak. But Isu is less popular. The fruit next to the Nyakak is called Terap. It is a far far cousin of Cempedak. It has a very strong smell and there are small fruits inside which are very sweet. Please google for more information. FYI, Terap happens to be our queen's favourite fruit, which she discovered whilst visiting Borneo. You should try it while its still in season. You can also find it in Sabah if you don't get the chance to try it in Miri.

It’s surprising Nyekak is allowed on the bus. It must not be as smelly to some people as durian. How many hours was this bus ride and the cost RM per person ?

You eat durian in a bus? Normally the driver would not allow it. Maybe because it is not the normal smelly one.

Oh nice! You guys stopped at Niah on your way to Miri. The market has since become bigger than the last time I was there (more than 10 years back). There's a junction going to the Niah Cave near that Niah R&R. 1:28 She was saying "terap". That's what the local Sarawakians call it. In Sabah, it's call "tarap". 0:42 It's called "nyekak" especially by the Ibans. 4:15 "kacang kuda" = chick peas; "kacang tanah" = ground nuts/peanuts. 11:38 I wonder if you noticed that no one seems to bid an eyelid that you are eating that wild durian in a bus or even took it in? Buses don't normally allow durians in them. 😆 That's due to "nyekak" not being as pungent and smelly as the common durians. You're lucky to have found them. If you venture into the famous market in Miri, ask around for what looks like durians. There are a few types of wild durians that might be sold there... isu (eee-soo), pakan (pah-can't) among others. If I hear that man at the back of the bus correctly, he also referred to that durian as "tutong". Probably another name for "nyekak". 18:58 No, it's not "isu". "Isu" is different. Usually smaller than "nyekak". Then there's the hybrid of durian+isu + durian isu. I chanced upon them many, many years ago in Saratok sold by the roadside. The seller said the two durian varieties cross pollinated in the forest. 20:15 The one next to the "nyekak" was "terap". You should try them if you find them in Miri. They're quite popular in Sabah.
